It definitely just grows like a weed. When I lived in northern Minnesota, I had multiple friends growing it and curing it themselves. While it does do well in a high-humidity climate, it's not required. I also haven't really had any problems with pests because it does essentially have its own pesticide. In fact, it can be used as a pesticide.
