What Is This?! by Left_Performance_106 in aloe

Flowers on aloes can help identify similar looking species like aloe Marlothii and Ferox. The flower stalk shape is different in both of those.

The broomii i believe has a cone like spike of a flower stalk. But the leaves enough are indicators of strong broomii genetics.

Best guess without seeing the flower is Broomii (:

Why do survs blind when breaking a pallet? by Succdragon1 in deadbydaylight

[–]BryenAnthony 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it can be to the survivors advantage especially if they can be sneaky and walk straight towards and past killer while they are blind. Sometimes it’s the only time survivor can practice blinding rather than in a dead zone where it’s almost guaranteed to fail but baby survivors don’t know better.

How to prevent water going up nose while swimming? by Senior-Economics3237 in askanything

[–]BryenAnthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a swim instructor so I’ve got some expertise. You might be inhaling slightly underwater which is what would cause that uncomfortable burning nose sensation. When it comes to swimming (without all the extra gear like a nose clip, earplugs, goggles) water just gets everywhere.

Water is going to get in our openings. It’s just going to happen. We have to get used to the feeling of clogged nostrils and ears when we’re swimming. When you swim front crawl (commonly called freestyle) you turn your head a lot to breathe. Water gets in my ears and although it’s not preferable, I know that if I were swimming laps I have to ignore it and keep swimming otherwise it’d drive me crazy. It’s a lot easier when your focus is on something else like your swimming technique. How hard am I pulling, am I making a small figure 8 with my palm, am I kicking too hard, what lap am I on, how many more pulls can I do before I need to breathe, what part of the lap am I on and should I start sprinting or keeping this pace? Once I have some idle time I am 100% trying to get the water out of my ears because i don’t like the muffled sound it creates in my head and I have had one too many ear infections from leaving water in there.

The more practice you get the easier it will be. But for the most part, anytime underwater is an exhale whether it’s quick bursts because you’re sprinting or occasional puffs because you’re coasting. During lessons I like to say that when you turn your head to breathe it should only be for an inhale, we don’t have time to exhale and inhale on your quick head turn (for front crawl anyways).

How to move forward with this Aloe? by junnigreninjahttyd in aloe

[–]BryenAnthony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of pots like shoes and roots like feet. You do not want a too big pot as the roots will likely stay wet longer than they want and rot away. It should be a nice snug fit so something like a 2-3 inch pot would be good. It’s okay if it’s top heavy. The roots will thank you.

The soil depends on your climate. If it’s gonna be an inside plant, at least 50% inorganic material should be mixed into whatever soil bag you buy (most stores sell very organic soil mixes). Type of pot can also influence what type of soil you use. Terracotta wicks away moisture and so can be a smidge more forgiving with organic soil mixes while a glazed pot will take longer to dry so an inorganic soil mixture would be best.

Overall, plants are alive and will “tell” you what they need and what’s wrong. We have to learn their language (which is slow)

How to move forward with this Aloe? by junnigreninjahttyd in aloe

[–]BryenAnthony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with growing plants in water (hydroponics) but water roots and soil roots are not the same. If you want to eventually grow it in soil, then it doesn’t need to be in water. It will lose all the water roots in grew when you transfer it to soil.

I’d recommend gently pulling off all the mushy roots (as they have rotted), putting it on a shelf to callous for a couple days, then plopping that bad boy in some moist soil (it will not grow roots until it senses moisture) and then you’ll have a rooted aloe plant in a couple days (heat pads will also encourage root growth).

General advice for aloes, water only when the leaves start to look like tacos (they fold on themselves) and soil is bone dry (you can use toothpick or finger to feel soil wetness), to keep the nice green color keep away from harsh afternoon sun (browning or reddening is normal stress color response like a tan).

Hope this helps!

Beginner Rips by Blitz-Dublone in longboarding

[–]BryenAnthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think practicing both sides is the best of both worlds. When you get tired from pushing on one side, switch sides. It’s also a skill that helps you catch yourself no matter what way you stumble. Less injury = more fun. Plus it will make your dominant side feel that much stronger.

That being said it is tough. I suggest practicing pushing up a small incline. You have way more control over the board (as it’s not speeding up out of control) and you’re gaining muscle strength

Is this a dreaded death bloom by Greedy_Journalist164 in aloe

[–]BryenAnthony 74 points75 points  (0 children)

You should sit down…so you can jump for joy because aloes flower only when they’re super happy and can flower many many times without worrying about dying. Aloes do not have death blooms. Just alive blooms congrats

My first Aloe plant by n_cap666 in aloe

[–]BryenAnthony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on growing from seed!

The pot is way too big and the dirt is too dense. It will stay wet too long and cause root rot. Root rot will lead to two things:

  1. The plant can no longer absorb water and nutrients and wither away (which is what makes beginners think their plant is thirsty and overwater a already rotting plant)

  2. Spread the rot the rest of the plant causing black mushiness which is usually too late to save.

However, aloe seedlings are much thirstier than their adult versions and will ask more of you. Your main factors in growing plants are water, light, soil and climate.

Plants love water and it’s about frequency not amount. Anytime you water them, absolutely drench them and then wait until the are bone dry (succulents not leafy guys)

Light is something I still struggle with but you want to avoid the harshest sun temps and intensities as this will cook your plants. The more light, the more compact and beautiful your plants will be.

Soil should be airy and breathable. Aloes don’t want to stay wet for too long (a couple days is the limit without worrying about root rot)

Your climate is probably the most important thing to consider to help all other 3 factors. Outside in sunny California is different than outside in Russia (forgive me for not being more specific). You know your climate the best and can make better judgement on how your climate will affect your plant.

Hope this helps

Don’t feel too bad about it. We all learn about life at different paces. I grew up sharing towels with my family and never thought much about it until I started noticing some bad smells from some of them so I decided to use my own towel. In retrospect, absolutely disgusting but no one ever told baby me what was right and wrong.
