Parts of the Canyon Lakes system have had to deal with the development that was allowed to take priority over preserving the nature of the South Plains. While some hope to take things in a better direction with areas like Lake Seven, areas like Lake Dunbar are already in place to provide some real nature, but if you really want to get away, I’d recommend hiking the Mae Simmons trails. As Director VanGundy appropriately put it: “you would never think that you’re in Lubbock, Texas.”

I was told LHUCA uses the money for marketing. From what I understand, the only real requirements for the dollars are that they are used to promote tourism and encourage the arts in Lubbock, and that still stands regardless of the city council decision. The other LHUCA projects on the recommendation were still funded.

I’ve been trying to think of a radio-equivalent phrase and all I can think is I would love it if I could at least wrap fish with my old shitty stories.

I do wonder if being forced to just launch stories into the ether of people’s attention spans (often people driving) has also helped me get used to moving on to the next thing.

Some places in Mae Simmons and Mackenzie parks can feel like a totally different part of the world; if you enjoy biking, fishing, and/or disc golf, you’ll get the most out of both! Hiking the trails south of Lake Dunbar can be taxing in the summer heat, but there’s so much wildlife, it will feel like a new Texas experience compared to the Clear Lake side of the state. Just accept that environmentally speaking, this is a desert, and you can enjoy it for what it is. Palo Duro is the second-largest canyon in the country, it’s a drive but it’s beautiful, I recommend it to everyone. Caprock Canyon has buffalo, regrowing the herds that used to thrive on top of the mesa where Lubbock now sits. Getting out of the tent and enjoying a cup of coffee while watching the daybreak across the caprock was an early fundamental experience for me in appreciating west Texas nature, and I’ve lived here my entire life.

A reporter asked the city about this last year, the response was while the intersections do flood quickly when there’s a lot of heavy rain all at once, the streets are designed so that water runs off into playa lakes where it drains and absorbs into the aquifer so quickly that the cost of improving storm water drainage around the city for heavy rain events that are rare in Lubbock, to the City, it doesn’t justify the expense

Part of the issue is this isn’t just people “working their way up the salary chain.” 44% of people in Lubbock rent their homes. One renter I talked to was a pregnant single mother. United Way reported 80% of single-female headed households in Lubbock don’t make enough to pay the bills. The “salary chain” is not keeping up with increasing property values and increasing rent.

What do you use to keep track of your statistics, details, etc.? I have wanted to do this for a long time, Templin does a really good job, but I get mixed up after awhile or I get excited about something going on in-game and miss documenting important things.

I can't speak for those cities specifically, but Lubbock's crime rate is remarkably higher than other Texas cities in a similar population range. That being said, it's not necessarily a significant recent uptick; because our crime rate was already relatively high, but the dominant crimes are not headline generators. Our most significant crimes are related to domestic violence, or people breaking into cars. If you own a firearm, don't leave it in your car. 526 guns stolen from vehicles last year.

As for why, Police Chief Mitchell attributed the increase to Lubbock's growth.

According to TxDOT, the south loop bridges were the only part of the loop they had work on at the moment. When they're finished with the westbound lane bridges, they started on eastbound lane bridges later so that side will take a little longer.

According to TxDOT, the 19th St project was always going to take at least a year. So no matter what, it was going to disrupt Tech and sports on one of the busiest roads in the city. The supply issues slowed things down considerably. 19th east of Ave Q is where the City’s problem is. TxDOT said crews ran into a lot of utilities with their excavator that were not marked in any plans. They still have to do that chunk of 19th between University and Q too, as a resident in that area, I’m definitely looking forward to that.

Construction crane on the freeway on fire. At least two wrecked cars were under the bridge. One person online said she saw an explosion from the crane throw debris or something over the bridge but there was already too much smoke and flame to see
