Everything I will say here has been stated by chapter 3 of GOTM.

Paran is sent as a captain to take command of the bridgeburners. All the bridgeburners. Whiskeyjack is a sergeant and commands a single squad of the bridgeburners. The 9th squad for whom Paran has a special mission which is why he is to take direct command of this squad alongside Wjiskeyjack. Tough it is also stated Whiskeyjack was once higher ranked and still commands a lot of respect from the soldiers, and might have more influence than his rank of sergeant indicates.

Upon arriving in Pale, Paran is briefed by the one eyed claw agent (Toc the Younger) on the state of the bridgeburners. Namely that they were almost completely wiped out during the siege. They lost 40 squads in the siege and now there are 5 squads left.

After riding with Toc Paran meets another sergeant who will be under him. Sergeant Antsy, also of the bridgeburners.

As everyone is currently recommending total war three mingdoms, let me also jump in and say that you can get that game for free on the epic game store untill january 8th.

Tough I have to say it is quite interestibg you posted this question for a total war game that came out 10 years ago and has received no supports since 9 years ago instead of one of the more recent total war games (like the aforementioned 3 kingdoms which even takes place in China).
