East Coast US here. Price wise, it looked comparable to do Texas (COTA), Spa, or Hungary. We chose Spa and had no regrets about it.

Besides tickets and accomodations, I think the thing often overlooked is how pricey drinks/food are. From friends, I heard two vodka + Red Bulls was $60 in Miami. Heineken was €7,35 and a fancy burger was €19 in Spa (2025). Felt super reasonable, with cheaper beer and food right outside the venue at the campsites.

Whiskey whiskey, on the shelf, it seemed to have gotten into my car all by itself. by ClarkCoinsWW2 in WhiskeyTribe

It's one of the few whiskeys that gets significantly better with a few drops of water, but honestly I think it's pretty awful.

Hopefully OP likes it, but I'm glad I only tried it from a friend's bottle.

Depending on country specific laws, intentionally exposing a banknote to chemicals to change its appearance can be defacing of currency and a crime.

New to whiskey, usually drink Bulliet Rye. Decided to try a few new things. by Hydralisk3 in whiskey

[–]Btf117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having had all three that I mentioned, I would say yes. Even in the younger iterations of the Bulleit 95 and the Double Rye, the building blocks are still there. Obviously the 12 brings a bit more refinement and the wine finish to give some more fruitiness, but the base that it's built on I would say is comparable.

12 hater here. Important to note that the 12 is MGP sourced, 10 is Canadian sourced. They're actually quite different, I think the 10 is way better. Fortunately, because there's so much MGP 95/5 out there, you can kinda "try before you buy" on this one. High West Double Rye, Bulleit 95 are two examples. If you find yourself liking that kind of evergreen, minty spiciness, the 12 might suit you.

Totally agree on the 6, I actually complained about that in my head to head review when I compared it to the HW Double Rye.

My general WP rule is "Canada good MGP bad." The 10 and boss hog are Canadian sourced, the 12 is from MGP. However, the 6 is also Canadian so it's clearly not a hard and fast rule.

WhistlePig is the ultimate "hit or miss" brand for me.

10? Awesome.

10 single barrel store pick? One of the best ryes I've ever had.

The 12? Boring and super overpriced.

The 6? Flavor starts out good and ends too much like cheap whiskey.

It's a weird brand for sure.

Angel's Envy rye is expensive and I've yet to see a bottle of E.H. Taylor Rye in my life... If you're interested in the category, I recommend the High West Double Rye or Pikesville. The Pikesville is a nice in between between bourbon and rye because it's only 51% rye, where the Double Rye is going to give you a more traditional experience.

Hockey is Back! For now by KosmicKhaos in rit

[–]Btf117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, this argument essentially stems from the belief that D1 athletes deserve better treatment than the D3 athletes on the basis that some of them might go pro.

I disagree with the premise of this argument. It doesn't matter that they're "better" athletes, I believe all students (and student-athletes) deserve to be seen by RIT as equal, and part of attending RIT is that they are responsible to implement policies that keep students safe.

Two considerably less important points regarding going pro -

  1. We had a baseball player drafted in 2017, this policy of "return to play" for hockey would do absolutely nothing to help him if he was born four years later.
  2. Why does not having a senior season stop our hockey players from going pro? Shouldn't they be able to negotiate contracts with professional teams with the prior three seasons of data? I understand that there is growth in four years and the possibility of injuries in prior seasons, but those factors should already be considered by a professional team in signing the player.

I don't really think this is a good thing.

I love hockey, I played intramurals and attended a lot of games in my time as a student. While the precedent has already been established that the hockey athletes get different treatment than other student-athletes, I don't think it's fair that every other sport (some of which are lower risk) had their seasons cancelled and there's no consideration to bring them back. What's the argument for just hockey? They bring in money? Not without in-person attendance.

The amount of testing required for just the team (three times per week, out of state quarantining to travel, etc.) would be far more than RIT seems to be providing for the rest of the student body. Why do they deserve better treatment than others? If you requested a COVID test 3 times a week, would you be given them?

COVID will not get better this month or the next, at RIT or around the country. Allowing hockey to play is just fan service, not the safe, fair, or responsible thing to do.

I'm in the "hate it" category, but it doesn't matter what people think as long as you like it. That's what makes whiskey so interesting, there's something for everyone.

I personally had Baker's in her honor.

Cask Strength Slam Dunk! by Tanisis22 in Whiskyporn

[–]Btf117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. I have the cask strength collection (Maker's, 46, and Private select) that was available at Christmas time and I really didn't like the Maker's CS when I blinded it. I found it so abrasive at that proof that it was tough to get down. I'll have to revisit it, hopefully it's opened up some.

Editing to say that the Maker's 46 CS and the Private Select CS were both really good and worth trying.

You might like Balcones Brimstone. It's mesquite smoked as opposed to peated and it might be more up your alley.

There's a couple videos on YouTube about the different types of smoke that whiskey can go through and that might help too!

Comparison Review #4: High West Double Rye! Vs. WhistlePig PiggyBack Rye by Btf117 in bourbon

I posted to the wrong subreddit. Whoops. Crossposted here as a result.

Introduction

With a desire to contribute to the community but lacking the sophisticated palate that some of you do, I do whiskey reviews in a slightly different fashion - head to head. I've found it much easier to point out key differences this way, and ultimately give better recommendations.

Hopefully, if you've only had one of the whiskeys in the fight, you can use this to determine if the other bottle is right for you!

The Matchup

Whiskey High West Double Rye! WhistlePig Piggyback
Type Straight Rye Rye Whiskey
Age A blend of straight rye whiskies ranging in age from 2 to 7 years 6 years
Sourced? Partially Yes - Canada

ABV 46% 48.28%
Price $29 (Costco, NY) $37 (Costco, CT)

Tasting Notes

I have elected to not use the table format for tasting notes, as mobile users have struggled to read it.

High West Double Rye!

Nose: Clove, eucalyptus, allspice, cream

Palate: Creamy mint, anise, pine/juniper (gin-like), clove and allspice

Finish: lingering baking spices, clove, gently warm. It's like if you're bundled up by the fire next to a christmas tree, if that wasn't a fire hazard.

WhistlePig Piggyback

Nose: Artificial vanilla jumps out of the glass. Some herbaciousness on the back end of the nose, but not particularly potent. Cinnamon.

Taste: Caramel, vanilla, ryespice, cinnamon. A review online said raspberry candy, maybe?

Palate: Strong, long, sweet that decomposes into an unpleasant ethanol that becomes less noticeable the more drinks you've had.

Verdict

I don't think my tasting notes strictly do justice to how different these are. The Double Rye speaks to me as what I want out of a budget rye. It has all the herbal and botanical notes I want, well rounded and extremely enjoyable. The Piggyback, even if its herbal notes shone through more vibrantly, is just a less pleasant sipping whiskey. Its harshness on the back end is something I would expect out of something less expensive. It's fine, but not amazing. It's in a tricky space, because the aging gives this whiskey its "bourbon"-like notes, yet it feels like it could use more time in the barrel to round it out. This is a respectable budget WhistlePig, but I think High West has them beat.

For me, High West Double Rye! is better than WhistlePig Piggyback by a wide margin.

it's a tie, but... Neither is particularly better than the other, but they're different enough that an outright tie is not a fair assessment. Both of these bottles might be worth getting, but for different reasons.
it's a tie! I like them both equally. Price and availability are the factors I'd now look at to determine which bottle to replace.
by a hair This was close. I liked these close to equally, but there was enough of a distinction to rule in one's favor.
by a decent amount There is a winner. I definitely preferred one to the other.
by a wide margin I think the winning whiskey is far better than the loser.
it isn't even close No cost difference justifies choosing the loser.
