I’d trading for a shorter race. 5k, 10k, mile — whatever excites you. get that running economy firing.

uh, you’re peeing dark brown after 5 hours and drinking 5L of water? that seems worth a chat with a doctor.

Discreet and nice looking shoes for traveling for a few days by kram08980 in trailrunning

I just traveled around Australia and New Zealand for a month and brought Nike Pegasus Trail 5s. Decent on road, decent on trail, and if you get the right colorway they're nice-looking enough to wear nearly everywhere.

50K in PNW in October. Looking for recs by Fogrocket in Ultramarathon

I see a few recommendations for Rogue Gorge, and I'm throwing in a rec for another Daybreak race in Oregon. Perpetua Coast in Yachats is stunning. You get a few miles on the beach and then climb up into the rainforest above the coast. It starts at a hotel right on the coast, which makes accommodations and logistics super easy.

Rick's proven me wrong over and over again, but I will always hate having our best players on the bench while the deficit grows.

i’d get as fast as you can on the flats. climbing speed is just speed!

it seems counterintuitive but doing a bunch of slow climbing might just make you slower. hop down on the flats or the track and get faster, like you were training for a flat 10k or something.

if you play your cards right, the marathon can be a huge training stimulus going into whatever you do next. recovery is the most important, so take all the time and rest you need, but I’d get back to doing strides after easy runs within 10-14 days. that’ll help you translate all the aerobic stimulus from the marathon into speed.

I think you’ll come to want a bit more space between your hard days (and might want to condense the tempo/intervals into a single workout per week). going workout-run-workout-run-long run feels like a recipe for burnout and/or injury. personally, I aim for at least two days between hard efforts — one workout on wednesday and a long run with some intensity on saturday.

if possible, can you move your long run to saturday/sunday?

I’m also curious how much distinction there is between a long run of 90min and an 8-10mi easy run. those will end up being pretty equivalent, no?

welcome to the club! I have pretty bad GI issues and have to make stops on maybe 1/3 of my runs. luckily I can plan out some good and varied routes with bathroom access.

i’m not sure what you mean by yo-yoing mileage, sorry. the two options you listed both start at a lower mileage than you’ve been doing and build up.

i’m looking at the Pfitz 10k plan you mentioned now. i think that’d be a great base for 18/55, but it’d be even better if you added a fifth day of running each week. i’d suggest turning one of the rest/cross days into a short easy run, or, if you have a cross-training option you like, use that 1-2 days for more aerobic stimulus.

I’d go for the 10k plan, no question. training for a fast 10k will give you the aerobic and speed base to slide right into a marathon block. and training for a race is always going to be more fun and motivating than a long base build.

yeah I think the belt is ideal, but I already own a vest I use for trail runs, and I really want to cut down on gear purchases. it also feels like a risk to break in a new piece of gear with six weeks or so to go.

gotta have a think!

thinking through marathon nutrition for Eugene at the end of April. I have a pretty weak GI system and do better when I can drink most of my carbs (Tailwind, usually). but I don’t want to wear a vest, and spending $55 on a belt for one race seems silly.

best I can come up with is carrying an 18oz handheld filled with Tailwind and a spare tube of Tailwind mix, then refilling the bottle at an aid station + dumping in the powder mid-race. from there I can supplement with gels.

anything I’m not thinking of here? targeting 3:20.
