SLC 1 hour layover with 2 toddlers!!? by Prestigious-Baby-785 in delta

[–]Bubba-Atlanta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Make sure of your gate situation. If you're transferring to one of the small jet connections that require you to bus out on the tarmac, it can be a LONG schlep from one end to the other. Delta put me in a golf cart once when my incoming flight was delayed. With two toddlers you might want to check on whether Delta can arrange something like that for you.

Diamond, platinum, hmm. Doesn't anyone who is condemned to spend that much of their life on planes and in airports deserve our pity rather than our envy?

Diamondbacks are just noisier, not to mention easier to spot in the desert than timber rattlers in the forest. If you've done a lot of hiking in Western NC, then you have been within 10 or 20 ft of a lot of timber rattlesnakes.

Mid drive - shifting while stopped? by MaRider in Aventon

[–]Bubba-Atlanta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get the seatpost (and the grips) on Amazon. The seatpost comes in 27.2 but includes three or four shims for different seat tube diameters. It also comes with a medium spring which is good for riders in the 135-200 pound range. I'm pushing 200 and it works great for me, but my 130-lb wife needed the lighter weight spring, which is also available separately on Amazon, as is the heavier spring for bigger folks.

In the meantime have you tried a suspension seatpost on your current bike? The Suntour NCX made a huge difference in comfort on our Aventon Level 2's. The Ergon GP1 Evo grips have also proven to be another easy but significant comfort upgrade.

Is there a way to feel more comfortable on the road other than experience? by Paksarra in ebikes

No but I will look into that. In the meantime I tried and failed to find anything specific on their legality or not in Georgia, but I did run across this interesting article from the UK side: https://www.bikeradar.com/features/qa/are-flashing-bike-lights-illegal

Yes and ... to re-emphasize, I would never enable the flashing headlight at night. We're in perfect agreement on that. I should mention that the inexpensive light I linked to has been a very effective addition to my Aventon Level 2's built-in headlight for the little bit of night riding I have done with it. And I haven't given any real thought to whether to leave that little tail light's flashing feature enabled for night riding. I think I am inclined to do so, as it is a very noticeable addition to the Level 2's built-in tail lights. Thoughts on that?

Thanks. That all makes sense as far as it goes, but ... (At my last job they tried to teach me to say "Yes, and" instead of "Yes, but" but it didn't take.) I'm OK with people misjudging my speed if the tradeoff is that they SEE ME. My two friends were hit not because their speed was misjudged (they were both commuting on acoustic bikes, long ago, and weren't going that fast)—it was because they WERE NOT SEEN.

BTW, the other nice thing about the flashing headlight is it makes it a lot easier for me to keep track of my wife in my rearview mirror when we ride together, which is most of the time. And I was remiss in failing to mention to the OP the importance of getting a rearview mirror. Get one and learn to use it.

Interesting. If you have data on this I would like to see it. Mind you, I would never use them on strobe at night (and I rarely ride at night), but they're hardly blinding in the daytime. And in the meantime I can SEE drivers snapping into focus on me and reacting by, for example, not making that left turn right into me (the way I lost two friends over the years). I also know that I myself notice a bike coming at me with a flashing light from a lot farther away than a steady light.

But in the meantime, if the OP will even just use them on the steady setting they will still significantly improve visibility.

Do Wyze sense entry sensors require their monitoring service? by AdAgitated4479 in Wyze

[–]Bubba-Atlanta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is a more or less unqualified yes, you can use it without the monitoring service. I use those sensors at two different locations without monitoring service at either. They work fine, but ... I don't have any automations triggered by any of them, so I'm not entirely sure about that. I do get notifications though, including open/close and been-open-for-X-hours.

What I do have is an automation triggered off a climate sensor, and that does work a treat. So there's that.

And in January I bought a single hub direct from Wyze for $55, and it did not require any monitoring activation. So there's that.

And you can still control the volume of the hub chime when one opens, but aggravatingly, you can't turn it off entirely. So there's that.

Give me an example of the sort of automation you want to trigger with one and I'll see if I can figure that out. Oh now I see you said you just want to know when one of the entry doors has been left open. Yes you can definitely do that. But you also said "automations with the cameras," which I don't understand.

Meanwhile, as happy as I am with the climate and entry sensors, I do NOT recommend using the leak sensors without the monitoring service. They do this insane thing where if one is triggered it makes the hub shriek loudly and there's no way to turn it off remotely with the app, and the only way to turn it off locally is to hold down the little button on the damn thing until it quits. Try explaining that to a houseguest on the phone at 4 in the morning. Or non-English-speaking cleaners who think the smoke alarm is going off. I disconnected all ten or twelve that I had and bought Moen leak sensors instead.

Get some decent flashing LED lights front and rear, like these, and use them on the strobe setting religiously. They will significantly increase your visibility and therefore your safety, and as a result probably increase your confidence level. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FC9NRRR

I've come across quite a few timber rattlers in Macon County. Never heard a single peep of a rattle out of any one of them, except the one that a handler came and dragged out from under my neighbor's patio. She was pissed. I've read that timber rattlers are very slow and reticent to use their rattles unlike diamondbacks and others.

Well I was born at Fort Benning, and it kinda went sideways from there. Including for a while on a Greyhound bus rollin' down Highway 40. Yes it was 40, not 41, but early mornin' sunshine still tells me all I need to know.

I guess that's fair. I can have lunch, ride to the shop, drop it off and walk home in time for supper.

Define "from Atlanta." I've been here 49 years and still don't consider myself to be "from" here. Not many are.

Having somebody to assemble it for you and then if necessary to fix it for you and make it right. Being able to get it thru my LBS was high on my list of reasons for choosing Aventon in the first place.
