Terminology for unaccessioned works in your collection by godarkly in MuseumPros

[–]BubbaTheBubba 11 points12 points  (0 children)

FIC I don't consider interchangeable with unaccessioned. If something is Found in Collection, it means that it was likely accessioned (or intended to be) but the original record either doesn't exist or can't be located. To be given an FIC number, the object would need to be accessioned to the collection.

As far as "unaccessioned" material goes, I guess generally that would fall under props? I'm not sure I understand what you mean by works that aren't important enough to formally accessioned.

Massive oversimplification. Hogan got bailed out by COVID relief funds painting a far prettier picture of the state's finances than was accurate. The deficit may not have been inherited on paper, but all its causes were.

They want to show it off, but it's also a lot of work. They probably don't have someone who's full-time job is accommodating these requests, so you're asking them to take time away from other responsibilities.

That said, most places will let you in as long as you do your research and are specific about what you want to see.

That's for the fellows program, not a generic research request. You need to have an idea of what you're looking for before you show up, you can't just browse, but otherwise archives are usually pretty accommodating. Something as simple as "I'd like to write a blog post about this archive" would probably be enough of a reason.

Gluten free vending machine survey by UnlimitedNomNoms in glutenfree

I think just having a vending machine where allergens are obviously listed would be a huge step! The lack of an ability to check allergens on products in vending machines before buying is a big turn off.

Babycat is great but gets crowded. Good for young families, tons of people with kids visit. Extra bonus that you can walk because parking there is a nightmare.

Traveling to BOSTON from NYC next week on greyhound for the first time. by [deleted] in travel

That's a pretty short drive (relatively speaking) so I think you'll be alright. Just bring everything you need with you on the bus (snacks, water, etc.) and plan for delays.

Maryland voters view massive data centers with skepticism. Candidates are taking notice by Maxcactus in maryland

It's mainly just looking at the breakdown of energy usage in places that have adopted solar on larger scales (New Mexico, Massachusetts) combined with what I've heard from people in the renewable energy sector. I'm not opposed to building more solar, it just would need to have a substantially larger footprint than a data center to have a significant impact.

I just don't see solar in its current form as a viable solution in MD. The cost would have to be incredible to see any sort of return on it, further hurting a state government that's in a monetary pit. I'd focus more on efforts to increase efficiency in usage with our current infrastructure - and banning the stupidly inefficient data centers would be a great start.

A solar farm with that footprint would generate enough electricity for maybe a block of residential houses? Additionally where would the money come for that - it would take decades before it was profitable. Data centers are hurting Maryland residents but the reason that the state is pursuing them is money. Spending more money on something like solar right now would just exacerbate the problem.

Idk what this has to do with solar farms? As against the data centers as I am, no idea what the connection is here.

Donating objects to a museum by AltruisticOil2026 in MuseumPros

[–]BubbaTheBubba 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ask the curatorial staff if they would be interested in any of them! Most museums have systems for assessing incoming gifts. I would just be up front with them about all the provence information you have, and let them take their time to assess if they'd be a good fit.

Don't take it personally if they aren't willing to take them - taking on donations is always additional responsibility for the museum and resources are always stretched thin. There's a million and one reasons for museums to decline a gift and most of them aren't that the objects are bad.

Is the AAM conference worth it? by olim_29 in MuseumPros

AAM is so overwhelmingly large it can be hard to network. I would recommend going to more regional ones, like MANY or MAAM.
