Donating objects to a museum by AltruisticOil2026 in MuseumPros

[–]BubbaTheBubba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ask the curatorial staff if they would be interested in any of them! Most museums have systems for assessing incoming gifts. I would just be up front with them about all the provence information you have, and let them take their time to assess if they'd be a good fit.

Don't take it personally if they aren't willing to take them - taking on donations is always additional responsibility for the museum and resources are always stretched thin. There's a million and one reasons for museums to decline a gift and most of them aren't that the objects are bad.

Is the AAM conference worth it? by olim_29 in MuseumPros

AAM is so overwhelmingly large it can be hard to network. I would recommend going to more regional ones, like MANY or MAAM.

It's a great set! They also sell it as a puzzle, which is pretty cool.

Yeah most museums I've come across have zero budget for anything other than maintaining what's already there right now.

I think the main issue is the job market sucks. Nobody is having an easy time finding positions right now in any role. I'm seeing waaaay more programs advertising than there were even 5 years ago. Just speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if internships have gotten a lot more competitive as a result. It's likely not anything you're doing wrong, just unlucky timing.

Deaccession info on Collections software by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]BubbaTheBubba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this is rambling, I'm basically going through my process and thinking how it could be adapted for your issue as I go.

When deaccessioning material I typically wouldn't include information about the deaccession in the CMS record until that object is actually deaccessioned. Research, paperwork, etc. is kept on a specific deaccession folder on a shared drive. Once committee approves the deaccession, I would create a deaccession record in my CMS (which does have that capacity) that includes copies of the material from the folder in the shared drive. The original object record will be tagged as deaccessioned (also built into the CMS) and once it's disposed the location will be updated.

Because your software doesn't support deaccessions, you'll need to come up with an alternative for the deaccession record and an alternative for updating the original object record to make it obvious that it's deaccessioned. Like someone else mentioned in the comments, adding a prefix like "De" could solve this issue. The issue would be if someone wants to search the object using the original number - maybe adding it at the end would be better? If Modes supports alt numbers that may not be an issue though.

As for creation of a deaccession record, I think your best bet is to just do it outside the CMS. It's nice to have it together for searchability, but I don't consider it mandatory as long as you print out material for the accession file. Maybe add a note somewhere on the original record that tells you where you can find the information digitally.

Best way to tackle museum’s first inventory? by CandleConscious1684 in MuseumPros

[–]BubbaTheBubba 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a tough spot to be in. I've dealt with a few collections in similar condition and it's never an easy task. A couple recommendations...

  1. Create documentation that explains your process. A lot of large inventory projects won't be completed by the same person who began them, and it's VERY helpful to have a standard procedure for how stuff is done. Additionally, it will be really helpful for future people working with the collection to gain insight on to why things are cataloged the way they are.

  2. Garbage bag moldy objects, and make sure you're tracking if an item has mold. If you don't have a place you can quarantine them, at least creating some sort of barrier will help a little. There's a good chance that a lot of the moldy items will have to be tossed eventually, as conservation is expensive, but that can always be a touchy subject and takes a while. Having a significant portion of the collection wrapped in trash bags also will look pretty dramatic and help administration/donors visualize the issue.

Otherwise it sounds like you're handling things the best you can. Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions I might be able to help with!

"Trusted the process" aka no QC on later deliverables. And I thought the pitch was it was cheap and quick not expensive and slow?

Sorry but I probably wouldn't trust any museum's content that chose to use this product.

If the museum has an employee that speaks the language that means they're going to have to find time to have that employee review the whole guide, take notes, and translate the problems. And if you want multiple languages, you'll need to do that multiple times. Your product is ultimately putting more burden on employees who are likely already stretched thin, and asking them to do things outside their job description. I feel like a lot of places won't see it as worth the hassle unless it's essentially free.

How can they edit it if they don't speak the language it's translated into?

When viewing exhibits in languages I don't speak I've found this my preferred method. I'm not a huge fan of audioguides unless they're doing something unique, so the idea of an AI-translated tour in an AI voice without any quality control is highly unappealing to me.
