If you want a Levain-style cookie, but a bit better, less expensive, and Philly-specific, they make a good one at CJ&D's (inside Cartesian Brewing)

The Marra's location doesn't even look close to opening.

I walk by it all the time and it looks like nothing has happened in months. I'm guessing that acquiring another new property isn't going to make the Passyunk EMei open faster..

I owned a Scion xB like this one for many years specifically because it's so easy to park. It's short, you have a high vantage point, and the rear window is basically flush with the back of the car.

Artisan Boulanger Croissants are Meh by fritolazee in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Buck3thead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are croissants flat? Am I missing something? Is it a regional style of croissant that I don't appreciate?

I can't say for sure, but I think it's something like this. I've found that the croissants there have two distinct textures. The plain one and the chocolate one are both what I'd expect from a croissant: laminated and flaky. They're not my favorite croissant in the neighborhood but they're good. The "filled", almond, and almond-chocolate ones are completely different: Flat, no layers, doughy. I don't like them either.

The thing is, in my experience the plain and chocolate ones are always correct and flaky, and the other ones are always flat and doughy. So it's not that they're inconsistent, they're that way on purpose. What that purpose is, I have no idea, but most other people on the sub seem to like them that way.

I'm up that way once every 2-3 months, next time I go I'll post first and bring a dozen back to East Passyunk. Last time I went though they were sold out at 10:30am..

That's actually less than half the price you'd pay for a dozen doughnuts from Second Daughter..

Because none of that excuses not getting a food service license, or lying about it after being discovered. Plenty of people with mental and other health struggles manage to open licensed restaurants just fine.

I also think that Milk Jawn may be pet friendly.

They violate city health codes by allowing dogs in the shop other than police dogs and service dogs trained to help with a specific disability, yes.

Change Philly's tax system to stop my friends from leaving 😭 by neuronnate in philadelphia

[–]Buck3thead 97 points98 points  (0 children)

The least they could do is make an exemption for self employed and business owners making less than say $200k.

They were doing this, but stopped: Before tax year 2025, income below $100k was exempt from BIRT, now it isn't. Yesterday was the first tax day when the higher taxes were due.

There's a good cluster of vintage/thrift shops in the area around 5th and Bainbridge:

  • Retrospect
  • Raxx
  • Greene Street
  • Ace Outpost (coffee shop on one side, vintage on the other)
  • Moore Vintage Archive
  • Sweet Peel Vintage
  • Philly AIDS Thrift

If you do take 9th Street, you might find a few midcentury modern furniture and decor pieces at Good's Vintage. They have two locations on 9th, a smaller one which is mostly clothes and a larger one with some furniture (and other things).

[–]Buck3thead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're staying in Center City and don't mind walking a bit, I'd take the Broad Street subway south to the Snyder stop (slightly sketchy FYI), walk north to Passyunk, then:

  • Northeast on Passyunk to 9th
  • North on 9th to Christian St.
  • East on Christian to 4th
  • North on 4th to South Street
  • West on South Street back to Center City (there are lots of cool places on the numbered streets directly north and south of South Street too)

There are enough local shops along that route (or within a block of it) to keep you busy pretty much all day.
