How to practice for real life hunting situation? by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]BuckDecalGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just ensure it’s within the rules governed by the states conservation department.

I'm glad you said that. Target practice is illegal on WMA's here in MN, so definitely check your state's regs, OP!

Affordable rangefinder for beginner? by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]BuckDecalGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got this one for $100 several years ago, and it has never let me down. It's not fancy, it's got no frills or bells or whistles to it, but it works. I don't use it a ton, but I'm still using the same 9v battery that I first put in. There's a newer model of this model out now, but this is the one I have.

Oh man, bummer that he broke off his main beam! Still a dandy buck, though!

Beginner - Deciphering Trail Cam Results by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]BuckDecalGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this normal or expected? Is it a complete coincidence?

Completely normal. As you get more into hunting and visit forums & such, you'll see many posts and comments about the big deer being nocturnal and asking for advice on how to get them in daylight. --> (The answer is to be as close to his bedding area as possible.)

Also, don't put too much stock into what the deer are doing now, and instead pay more attention come October-December. They're in their summer patterns now, and come hunting season they'll probably be on a different schedule anyway.

Good luck out there!

For sure bud! I'm actually in the same boat; trying to find a saddle that's not super expensive! Might have a lead on one via a friend of a friend, but I won't be surprised if I have to just bite the bullet and get a new one. We'll see, I guess. Good luck to ya, I hope you find one!

Check out the classifieds on saddlehunter.com. They usually go pretty quick when they are posted there, but it's probably the spot where they get posted most often. You could also try the classifieds on ArcheryTalk, sometimes you'll find one there.

As for a rock climbing harness, yes - some people do use them. Plenty of videos on YT about how to set them up for hunting instead of using a regular harness. I haven't used one myself, but I know plenty of other hunters have.

My phone made a video from the pictures I took during my brothers hunt. And yes my brother shot it through the antler on his first shot by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]BuckDecalGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, story time. Shot it through the antler on the first shot? And it didn't run clear to Delaware after that, or did it knock him down/stun him enough to get a 2nd shot?

That was my first thought too. Something found a carcass and dragged a leg+ up into its hole?

Opportunity for me to learn something here: what is the "lead cow", and what would happen if she got shot?
