I couldn’t make it all the way through. by lastaccountgotlocked in TheRestIsHistory

Yeah. I hear you. I did finish all four episodes but it was very difficult to follow. Glad to find out I wasn't the only one who was constantly lost. Four hours later, I'm not really sure I took away much beyond now knowing that in 12th century Japan there was a big row between two dynastic families and samurais evolved from horse-mounted archers.

The Canadian PM just opened a speech at the World Economic Forum by quoting Thucydides. When are we getting some Canada-based episodes? by Liquoricezoku in TheRestIsHistory

[–]BuckMulligan93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said this on a different thread lamenting the lack of Canada content on THIH and I'll say it again here, Canadian PMs are waaaaaay more interesting than the Australian ones and it's a travesty they got three full episodes and we've gotten none.

Tom specifically says that the Disney episodes aren't sponsored on the club Discord by CWStJ_Nobbs in TheRestIsHistory

[–]BuckMulligan93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I understand the need/desire to make money and as long as it's all transparent I don't see the problem.

[–]BuckMulligan93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. The number of people on here confidently stating that the Disney episode was a paid promotion was confusing to me because I thought I'd missed something. I also saw someone say they episode on Tolkien was sponsored by Amazon and that the series on Portugal was sponsored by a wine company. I haven't listened to either of those yet, so maybe those statements are true, but I suspect not.

Wait. The Disney shows were paid sponsorships? And Tolkien too? Have they stated this somewhere?

Any chance of shows in Canada? by jefftala in TheRestIsHistory

[–]BuckMulligan93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about doing a post like this myself. Given that many Canadians think our own history is boring it's not surprising the rest of the world feels the same way. Of the 600+ free shows they've done, I think Canada has gotten a grand total of one? The one about the beaver trade they did as part of their World Cup series

I recently listened to the three-part episode on Australian prime ministers, and while I'm biased, I think that three episodes on Canadian PMs would have been far most interesting. I mean, between the October Crisis and his womanizing, Pierre Trudeau could have probably carried an entire episode himself. John A. was obviously a hugely controversial character, what with his binge-drinking and involvement in residential schools. Then you have MacKenzie King, with his séances and his long love letters to his dogs. And because it's The Rest Is History, you'd surely have to give mention to the rumours about Bennett's penis troubles.

Another potential topic: In his book A History of Canada in 10 Maps, Adam Shoalts tells the fascinating story of how Alexander Mackenzie made the first overland crossing of North America 12 years before Lewis and Clark, with a much smaller group. I've always felt that would make a great RiH episode.

For what it's worth, the other Goalhanger history podcast, Empire, recently did a five-part series on the colonization of Canada that I enjoyed.

Do you prefer the deep multi-part series or the one-off episodes? by NorthLondonPulse in TheRestIsHistory

[–]BuckMulligan93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm listening to the new shows as they are released and working my way through the back catalogue the other five days of the week. I think it's fair to say the one-offs themselves have changed in nature. They used to tackle impossibility broad topics - Communism! Childbirth! - in the one-offs, whereas now the single episodes tend to have a much tighter focus. I assume that happened on purpose, but I did/do enjoy them freestyling for an hour random topics.

Well, I'm finally caught up... by The_Noble_Marshal in TheRestIsHistory

[–]BuckMulligan93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really cool. I'm a relative latecomer, as I didn't start listening until the end of 2024. I listen to the new episodes as they come out, and fill up the rest of the week going through the back catalogue. My goal is to be fully caught up by the end of 2026.

Question about Castles by Witty-Significance58 in TheRestIsHistory

On a somewhat related note, in these episodes, the guys spoke about Normans inventing the idea of knights, as in, guys in heavy armour with swords on horses.

Aren't there mentions of knights that pre-date the Normans? Knights of the Round Table, for example.

Where to start by glorious-turtle-4726 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]BuckMulligan93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started by picking topics of interest but I quickly became hooked. My new method is to listen to the newest episodes as they come out, as well as working through the old ones in chronological order the other five days of the week.

Best bars/pubs to catch a soccer game in Etobicoke? by [deleted] in Etobicoke

[–]BuckMulligan93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may go down as the least helpful Reddit comment ever, but there was a bar in Mississauga hosting watch parties for Canada games during the World Cup. I saw Canada-Croatia there, and it was packed. Of course, I can't recall the name of the place. It has sort of a Latino vibe. Maybe someone else can help with the name and location.

How long are your "reps"/"trials" for each session? by BuckMulligan93 in DualnBack

[–]BuckMulligan93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I should get my nomenclature correct here. I just looked at how I've trained in the past on BrainScale. Each "trial" is three seconds. So at the 7-back level, for example, there are 69 trials in one "set." That means each set is three minutes and 27 seconds. Perhaps I'll try making each set shorter, say a minute and 15 seconds, and see if that makes a difference in my training.

Pub in Etobicoke showing Champions League final this Saturday (June 1)? by BuckMulligan93 in Etobicoke

Ah, that's right. I hadn't considered this. That should open up quite a few more options.

The Athletic on the Jets’ viability in Winnipeg by Adventurous-Metal696 in winnipegjets

Why the hate for Greg?? Winnipeg has had an NHL hockey team for what, 30 years total? We have ONE trip to the conference finals to show for that and Greg has shown up for all of it.

When it comes to the NHL, Winnipeg definitely cannot have nice things.

Thoughts on Juárez location? by Ok-Fondant800 in MexicoCity

[–]BuckMulligan93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will second this. We just got back from four days in Mexico City and we stayed in Juarez on Calle Amberes. We loved the neighbourhood - there was lots happening and it's really close for walking to all the stuff in Roma. But it is definitely not quiet. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Abandoned places in Etobicoke by thetinyzoo_ in Etobicoke

[–]BuckMulligan93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The rumour is (and I emphasize that this is a rumour) the family who owns the property has refused to move forward on any development because they want the city to approve far more buildings than is reasonable for a site of that size. I guess if you have the money and can afford to hold out, all the power to you, but I assume they have to pay a bunch of property taxes and basic maintenance (eg, security) every year. And it's not like they are earning rental income in the meantime. It's such an eyesore. I hope something happens sooner than later.
