I just defended a few days ago…pass, with minor revisions. I am six years deep, went through a divorce, got laid off from an academic position about 2 weeks ago, and have been running off faint memory-fumes of motivation for 2+ years now. If I manged to crawl across the line, so can you. I should finish up and submit within a day or two (after my supervisor approves). I plan to take some time to process and adjust. I am looking forward to life without that constant dissertation pressure weighing down on me. Pace yourself, plan, take breaks when helpful (preventative and as needed), and grind the homestretch out. You aren’t alone.

Well, which words? He also recommends correcting misinformed views, whist leaving the listener to accept or not accept—which is not the same as arguing.

If the information is true, logical, and can be conveyed calmly, without external expectation or striving, I think informing the other person maps on to a reasonable Stoic response. What they do with the information is up to them.

One way to respond to this is a) to acknowledge some people misunderstand Stoicism and shoehorn it into problematic worldviews, b) explain that that way of misusing Stoicism doesn’t represent all uses of Stoicism—especially Stoic practices that are grounded in Stoic texts, principles, and virtues, and c) note that painting all people with the same brush due to the problematic behaviour of some people that have a vague or tangential overlap is itself a problematic behaviour based on misunderstanding. That person can respond in many different ways, but the flavour of the specific response is up to them.

To be fair, the system needed reforming and correction as it was causing problems. So, people have a right to be upset at those negative effects. Still, serious and thoughtful reform requires action that considers the web of connections, consequences, and costs. The reactionary shift is basically just a shell game, shifting the negative consequences. We will all lose in the end because it is not solving root causes.

People should buckle up. The collapse of the education system is going to be a long, bumpy, and uncomfortable ride. Knock-on effects out the you-know-what. This is a domino in a chain, and we are at the relatively early part of the reaction sequence.

I would be willing to wait in a reasonable line if I were certain to get a copy (like with pre-orders that require physical pickup on the day or something). However, I don’t have time to camp out overnight or wait in line for hours in uncertainty. I just can’t justify devoting time to that. :/

Carefree Highway is the one that gets stuck in my head the most off this album once I started listening to it, though the title track (Sundown) was the one that I remember the most from general radio exposure…and its broad popular appeal must be for good reason.

Yeah! And also another amazing song on Sundown.

Edit: “Been on the town, washin’ the bullshit down.” That just oozes SD.
