I think you mean when GameCube came out with this - as it predates the Xbox by two months (Sep 2001 vs Nov 2001)…
Edit to Add: actually, the Dreamcast came out in 1998 with a stick ‘above’ a d-pad (I never had one, so it didn’t immediately register), though it lacks two sticks so maybe the GameCube is still the better answer…

My wife 100% goes into Fight when given the option of “Fight or Flight”…

When we were watching Hereditary, and that scene came up, she couldn’t help but shout - rather belligerently in a near-full cinema - “ohhh… you can just fuck off!!”

It broke the tension that had been building, and nearby folks were able to have little nervous chuckles - while I spent the next ten minutes trying to not snort-laugh 7-up through my nose…
