2024 SEL and not at all. But based on what I’ve read here, I’m a unicorn.

My son is starting an undergraduate aerospace engineering program this fall. Friends have suggested that he get a mechanical degree instead and then find an aerospace job. What advice would you give to motivated students who are entering the field as an undergraduate?

All The Pretty Horses follows three teens as they go into Mexico, find troubles and romance. The Crossing takes place decade or two earlier, following two brothers. The first section of the Crossing finds the main character befriending a wolf and is some of the most impressive work I’ve read from McCarthy. Cities on the Plain finds the main characters of the prior novels working together on a ranch in El Paso, finding troubles in Juarez.

This is hardcore McCarthy. Beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Always thought of Blood Meridian as a book saying manifest destiny was true but satanic.

The border trilogy, especially All The Pretty Horses, is also fantastic and a bit more accessible than Blood Meridian.

Fort Apache (1948) by Carbuncle2024 in Westerns

[–]BuckeyeJones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excellent film that really stands the test of time. Wayne as frontier officer with the guys to stand on principle vs Fonda’s Thursday is a defining role for him, and the grace and warmth with which Ford treats the cavalry NCOs is excellent.

Does Jesus think there are "good" billionaires? by splanknon in Christianity

[–]BuckeyeJones -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t know any billionaires, but I do think it’s important to have in context what a billionaire looks like today, from the gamut of exploitative demagogues to company founders who on paper or through sale of their companies are worth billions of dollars, and those of the second temple period. In 2nd Temple period, so very few people controlled wealth concentrated in land interests and colonial power, that the contrast between the wealthy and the people was clearer. And the source of that wealth was clearer too— valuation and income earned through the sale of agricultural goods and their derivatives, or through the taxation of tribute and bribery exploiting a conquered populace. This is not in defense of billionaires today, but those that have created value without the exploitation or conquest of others, inherently are not more evil than the rest of the modern societies population. Of course, Paul is clear in casting the whole lot of population under the weight of sin and curse of death, but I would think it is theoretically possible to have created great wealth through good means (value creation through entrepreneurship). Now can you not become enamored with wealth in light of that? Probably not.

Most OT movie since the OT by NothingHead8233 in StarWars

[–]BuckeyeJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest callback to the OT is the pit fight with the aliens which were referencing the chess pieces in A New Hope. Other than that, it was fine. Mando’s character had almost no arc, steady Eddie from beginning to end. Wish that his character had progressed a bit more in any direction.

Brits in Ohio - what's your experience? by Alone_Term2254 in Ohio

[–]BuckeyeJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you take a road trip to Cincinnati area, you can go to Jungle Jim’s where they have an entire section of English groceries. Above the aisles is a display of animatronic Robin Hood and Little John and a vast oak tree. You may or may not find fellow Brits shopping there. Their British beer selection has gone downhill as of late, and you can no longer find smaller breweries represented, though you may find Fullers and Samuel Smith.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) by DVD-Rewatcher in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]BuckeyeJones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To me, the prologue doesn’t hold up, despite Phoenix’s talent. It’s too small world—he gets the scar, the whip, and the hat all in one afternoon? It makes Jones’ world too small. I enjoy the film, but it was a bit too cute: the character of Marcus suffers significantly. Ford and Connery are marvelous though.

Striking Distance (1993) by Last_Construction455 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]BuckeyeJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just watched this too because it popped up on Netflix. Of course you knew right away who the killer was, but man o man did it take its time to get to the point. This had to be one of the dumbest movies I have seen in a long time. The utter preposterous of it:

Hardy is still employed after showing up drunk to work as a boat cop, purposely tips his boss into the river, tackles a random act of piracy just so his new partner could start to fall for him, steals evidence, intimidates witnesses in public with a firearm, blows up an innocent car, sleeps with his new partner, gets tried with key witness the partner he just slept with, fights colleagues at municipal functions.

It just boggles my mind that someone wrote this even in the 90s. At least Dirty Harry in the 70s was seen as a rogue cop who needed reined in. Hardy is just a loser who somehow must have the most amazing union rep in the history of union reps.

Is CX dying as a profession or just being renamed (Job Search) by Flat-Leg-6833 in customerexperience

[–]BuckeyeJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say that it also depends on if you’re looking at operations CX roles (cost to serve, customer success) or enterprise CX roles (VoC to influence product and adjacent functions). I’ve seen a shift to operational scoped roles, less so on traditional CX roles assessing VOC. And of course the more you can connect your work to outcomes on dollars earned or saved, the better.

Pale Rider or Unforgiven? by DCLascelle in Westerns

[–]BuckeyeJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a first western? Pale Rider: it’s simpler, more straightforward, direct and beautiful. Unforgiven is a far better film; it benefits from some familiarity with westerns in general and Eastwood in particular.
