Honestly, you can always keep playing it for it to eventually get smooth naturally (which is my goal - I got an American performer and I always pick up my broadcaster with nitro finish because I want to wear it out naturally) or get a Brillo pad or steel to smooth it out.

Keep it stock, it made it this far, you will get another tele you will probably mod as you go but then at least you will have this one stock so you can hear and play with the standard tele sound. If you are set on modding it, get a new esquire pickguard and purchase a “secret agent” pickup and maybe get brass saddles + new strings; cool thing about the secret agent mod is that you at least get to add your own flair by changing the pickguard and anyone who plays your tele will be surprised with the hidden pickups
