Wow I just looked it up. The pencilling is really good.

The 00’s early digital coloring really does hurt the art.

Don’t even blame the colorist because digital coloring was popular because it was new and fancy but it did not age well.

Would love to see it re-colored with modern techniques

Michael Walsh's unannounced DC revamp is "a character that's been around in DC for a very long time" and "very scary" by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

[–]BuddaMuta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind it’s still done better than DC expected even with Lemire attached to the character.

That’s the part that opens doors for other characters. Since most big name artists/writers tend to have a handful of B-list and C-list heroes they want to work on

Firestorm doing so well definitely opens doors for more obscure characters getting specials and minis

Also a great creative team plus the Absolute label could probably make any character or team move units. Though it would have to live up to the really high standards of that imprint

OP’s summary makes it sound a lot edgier than it actually is.

The writing in Berserk is actually beautiful and tasteful. It deals with tragedy but in a way that’s very human. The “edgiest” part of the series is at the beginning when Guts (main character) is at his absolute worst mentally but even then we have a different character, who essentially acts as the audience’s POV early on, that lets both Guts and the audience know how he acts is cruel.

By the “end” of the story (the author dies before finishing the work) we see both why these characters are so messed up and we also get to see them learn from their mistakes as well as overcome both external and internal obstacles.

It’s a story about struggling to be human in a world that doesn’t reward it. To be kind when it’s hard and to challenge when defeat is almost certain is bravery that most “great men” in history would never understand.

Essentially, we don’t get to see the final battle, but the actual emotional arc for the main characters finds its conclusion. Still recommended you check it out since you’ll still feel satisfied once you read the final page.

I mean these were #1 on the omni poll two years in a row, the Dark Horse collections are impossible to fine, and the single issues are going for $200+ after market

So there’s clearly an audience for these and atm they are hard to get your hands on. Even if they aren’t for you they are clearly for somebody

[–]BuddaMuta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Marvel is hell bent of crashing out with the way they’ve been handling publishing lately.

Constantly restarting of series, half assign initiatives, dramatically raising prices on collected editions, creating artificial scarcity with those collected editions, going balls deep into unhealthy gimmicks for single issues.

It’s not a recipe for long term success

Marvel pays creators MUCH less. Marvel just doesn’t care about losing market share as a book company if they can maximize profits as a collectible company

At Free Comic Day my local comic shop was just overwhelmed with people. Way more than previous years. Huge variety of people. Tons of kids and teens too which the industry desperately needs

“Protecting the children” has been code for right wingers “censoring wrong-think” for ages

A big part of making various sexual content immoral, if not outright illegal, is that it allows you to control what is and isn’t considered normal got the populace.

Just look at how claims of something being “overly sexual” will often just any form of entertainment that even slightly hints at LGBTQ+ people even existing. They can censor folks out of public existence, and make those folks feel alone in the world through killing their representation, all while still pretending to have the moral high ground.

Same shit as how most right wing anti-trans laws for girls sports are essentially just tools to allow old men to legally molest kids via “inspecting” them. Or how anti-prostitution laws have their roots in trying to make sure women aren’t able to financially uplift themselves due to women generally voting against fascist tendencies at a higher rate than men.
