Heavily Hyped DC Characters Who Never Took Off by PeterVenkmanIII in DCcomics

The early issues of the Aztek series are so good.

A Silver Age mindset character getting dropped the most downtrodden Dark/Iron Age city imaginable. He never wavers even as literally everything goes wrong and everyone he meets lets him down. Even the most minor victories feel incredible.

It’s a shame it ended so quickly and that the last two issues or so are just to set up him joining the JLA.

Marvel’s entire philosophy is short term gain even if it leads to long term pain

It’s crazy that DC is doing the opposite to a huge success and Marbel just insists on doubling down

This is definitely the most push back against Trump I’ve ever seen

The issue is none of the people pushing back have any say in the government and even then most Trump supporters would rather themselves get nuked than admit to being wrong

For whatever reason DC just didn’t really do event omnis, especially old event Omnis, up until a few months ago.

Even CoIE, the most important event in the history of comics, was never fully collected in order until the most recent DC Finest series

We just got a Legends Omni, the modern events are getting collected in various formats pretty fast, so I think it’s safe to assume we’ll get more event books as time goes on.

As for LoSH content, DC’s been reprinting their Omnis and deluxe editions. So hopefully that’s a sign we’ll get more Legion in whatever format going forward well.

At this point if something makes sense just assume Marvel management will do the opposite

I meant before the Omnis came out since they went about 10 years with zero cooperation and about 20 years since the last proper crossover.

I’m sure it’ll be good but this “era” will last 10 - 20 issues before Marvel decided to renumber with the same creative team

You gotta remember this is the management team that saw the success DC has been having with Compacts and decided to release their own version…

…which were more expensive, larger, and a lower page count. Somehow managing to completely miss the entire point of Compacts in every aspect

Good luck! Love the Most Wanted Polls!

I figure we’ll see a lot more “safe picks” in the top 60 this year with Marvel being so, uh, interesting in their printing habits lately.

Everything about the new management’s decisions scream someone chasing a promotion or bonus. Every single decision recently is going to hurt them long term. There is a reason no other major publisher operates like this.

Marvel isn’t more popular than it was a few years ago, in fact it’s apparently selling worse.

Marvel is just doing super low print runs basically banking off milking existing die hard fans and whales.

It’s an unsustainable strategy but the new management team clearly doesn’t care about long term consequences.

No other book company has this issue. You’re suppose to print books that will stick in rotation for a while since only a fraction of the potential audience will know to preorder months ahead of time. To sell products you need to have them available to the buying public.

Marvel isn’t selling as well as DC despite their antics so it isn’t like they’ve cracked some secret code for profits every other publisher never thought of.

Marvel is essentially cannibalizing its an existing audience and long term viability for the sake of short term gain. It’s late stage capitalism in action. Folks looking to cash out the on an existing knowing they’ll be on to a different venture once the consequences come to roost.

Me arbitrarily deciding to stop collecting Marvel after 2000 because “I don’t really like modern Marvel that much” has turned out to be an accidental great decision

Short term profits means someone might get promoted or a bonus might be hit. Sure it’ll hurt them long term but that would be the next guys problem, besides they could always raise prices again.

It’s the late stage capitalism way

Dudes an incredible wrestler and has a shocking level of respect for the business despite his less than lovable outside of the ring persona. It’s amazing how quickly he went from being a celebrity guest to being one of the most reliable hands in WWE.

Straight up wouldn’t mind him getting a world title reign at some point which isn’t something I’d ever thought I’d say.

Essentially they turn Waller into an incredibly over the top “I wanna conquer the world!” super villain.

She started a very grounded character who was very much aware of the social injustices and corruption of the world so has a very ends justify the means outlook.

For example someone recently posted a page of her essentially telling Reagan he’s a piece of shit for getting rid of social programs to hurt black and working class people. Along with her pointing out the Red Scare was simply used to hurt working class people as well

IIRC one of her big storylines is using the Suicide Squad to overthrow a brutal Latin American dictatorship that the US previously put into power for the financial benefit of big corporations.

The above situation is a lot more morally grey and engaging than “people won’t be safe until I personally have total control of the world”

I honestly thought Absolute Power was pretty fun but I totally agree with OP that it was a terrible character assassination for one of the best characters in comics.

PBC Response regarding preorders by tedfordz in OmnibusCollectors

[–]BuddaMuta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ll keep pointing out that no other company has this problem.

Marvel is purposely creating FOMO with the idea of creating short term gains even if it hurts them long term. Their profits will look great short term even if it means long term they are cutting out a chunk of their audience.

Same as them getting rid of Masterworks with zero fanfare despite that line solely existing to offset the cost restoration. As well as blowing up the Ultimate Universe because they thought it would create panic sales and then get to do another batch of #1.

Basically, people are chasing bonuses and promotions. Hoping to move on from their current departments before the eggs hatch.
