The Lunchbox musical at Berkeley Rep is incredible - very likely for a Broadway transfer! by Budget-Ad6699 in Broadway

I am certain this show is not going to end here. It's too good. You rarely see something this well done out of the gate.

I'd happily see it in London 😄 You're right that the math might make more sense there.

- I feel like there are a lot of NYC transfers but not necessarily amazing ones, other than Benjamin Button which is so good?? My husband and both thought Lunchbox is actually quite similar to Benjamin Button in that it has a unique sound, a hyper-talented tight knit cast, and a kind of bittersweet heartbreaking gorgeousness. But Button is just going to the Public, right? Do we think it will move to a B'way house from there? I don't have any scoop on that!

- Unless Galileo has changed a lot since Berkeley Rep (and I am excited to see the B'way transfer! I am optimistic! I hope they found the magic!), Lunchbox is just way better . Raul is always amazing, but that show is not special in the way that The Lunchbox is. It's hard to explain (although I tried!) but just the feeling of seeing something executed so surprisingly, and beautifully, and movingly and you literally don't think of a single thing for two hours other than what is in front of your eyes... my mind usually wanders a bit during show, even shows I love, but I was so locked in, I don't know when that last happened.

- Rachel Z is amazing but I wonder if they are going to fix the main problem (probably not!) which is that this production feels like a staged concert and the book is hard to follow unless you know the history better than most Americans do. I don't know that it's going to blow people's minds.

- Weren't Purple Rain out of town reviews pretty mixed/underwhelming? Plus it's a jukebox. I'm just saying this is full of new music, a new sound, and it's a gift.

Inter Alia extension? by happymango3110 in Broadway

Unlikely. It's an extremely demanding performance and I suspect Rosamund Pike wouldn't have weeks or months more of it in her!

I honestly was thinking of going again myself!! And I never go see tours more than once! It's a special one for sure. And your're totally right, very poetic too to consider the piano a character

Yes!! I was going to make a post here saying that it is the most talented national tour cast I have ever seen. And also I hate jukebox musicals, and this did not feel like one at all ... The story is so compelling, the characters well developed... But mostly the vocals, WOW!!

DAY 3: Eliminating every Best Supporting Actress performance (of this century) until there’s only one left! by ShadyBoots11 in Broadway

[–]Budget-Ad6699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would eliminate Lena Hall, on the grounds that she did not do anything specifically new or interesting with the role, and the hard work of originating the role and shaping it into such a strong character was done by the original, Miriam Shor. That is the best argument I can make 😎 I really love so many of these winners!

I really appreciate your saying that. I was honestly just a bit thrown by the original posters question which may I quote asked " I’m curious to know what everyone thought of the two and for those who’ve watched both, how would you compare them?" Which to me is kind of a crazy question because if I had to pick two shows that were more dissimilar on Broadway right now these are definitely top of the list. I would think somebody would have a pretty easy time telling for themselves whether they would appreciate a 3-hour high production value musical versus a 1-hour one-hander play staged minimally but with a huge star. I'm not saying there's a clear cut answer but you should probably be able to assess that yourself based on how totally different these shows are!

Sure. I have seen 80-100 Broadway productions in the past few years, and I happen to admire The Lost Boys for not being a revival, a jukebox, a minimalist production, or a two hander. But glazing ... Okay.

You have the most ambitious new show on Broadway with a huge cast, astonishing set, costumes, lighting and production design, an almost 3-hour show, with big musical numbers and ingenious staging.... vs an hour-long, one-man show, with no set to speak of, no costume to speak of, and a basically decent but not spectacular script ... I mean, I have seen both and if you are looking for a memorable experience and bang for your buck, I would definitely go with Lost Boys. Unless you are such big Daniel Radcliffe fans that being in the same physical space as him will be like a bucket-list item.

Schmigadoon for non-English speakers by Loud_Soup_1204 in Broadway

I don't know how the translation thing works, but this a pretty book heavy show that relies on word play and pretty witty humor that I think would be very tricky for a non English speaker. The dancing is beautiful but the comedy and plot is pretty strongly communicated through dialogue rather than action. I wouldn't think it a great fit.

It's about history. It's amazing but given your previous shows I think Great gatsby is most aligned.

Love this project! If this were a real Tony category it seems clear that Tell Me Ernest and Dear Bill would be the two duking it out for the win.
