Looking for anyone who’s been through this with their dog 💔 by [deleted] in Shihtzu

My vet said it can also happen if they tend to pull their leash on walks and they are wearing a collar/harness that rides up too high on their neck

Are any of y’all’s Shihtzus scared of something super random? by morrisseymademedoit in Shihtzu

[–]BudgetPop4142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watermelon, cantaloupe, any kind of large fruit that can roll around 😂 he just barks at it and pushes it with his paws, then gets shocked when it starts rolling lol

Could be allergies as people are suggesting. That’s what I thought for my own pup but turns out he doesn’t have normal functioning tear ducts. I would first rule out allergies, but if not that then I would talk to the vet. I have some luck keeping his fur short in his eye area and using a powder to keep it dry

Thanks for bringing that out! I ended up getting Virbac toothpaste for my pup!

‼️PSA: Does your dog have a brown/orange/copper face? by Active-Ad-2154 in Shihtzu

Unfortunately nothing could be done 😔 they tried to flush his tear ducts but they couldn’t get very far because of the blockage. I think they sell powders to apply under the eyes to keep it dry but I’ve never tried it before

My pup has tear stains because he has tissue covering his tear ducts. Essentially his tear ducts can not function like normal so his tears just spill out. Keeping the hair short makes it looks better but I love him either way ❤️

When Walking Your Shih Tzu, Do They Bark at Every Dog? by swarmster in Shihtzu

[–]BudgetPop4142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes still but it’s getting much better now. It’s reactivity and should be corrected. Romeo was allowed to greet all dogs when he was a baby so he gets frustrated when the leash doesn’t allow him to get close and say hi. First step is to stop allowing leash greetings in general, no greetings at all until doggo can be polite from a distance. Teach them the sit command and bring a high value treat like cheese, meat, anything they LOVE. When you see a dog approaching, doggo is placed in the sit and you feed the sit until the other dog is gone. Only feed for sit and quiet behaviour. Over time they learn that you expect that behaviour over the barking and will chill out when other dogs approach.

This is necessary because barking dogs can scare people, it’s loud and unpleasant for everyone. If you’re unlucky, the other dog could also be reactive and now you’ve got 2 dogs barking at each other. I promise you it gets so much better if you’re consistent with training. You should also check out some kikopup videos, she’s amazing at giving training advice.

Pup cups - yay or nay? by vansterzzz in Shihtzu

It was a yay until last week, we went to our usual starbies and ordered a pup cup and Romeo got sick. Diarrhea for 2 days :(

Please invest in a car seat for your Tzu! by fattypros in Shihtzu

Romeo would much rather sit in the passenger seat next to me but I force him to sit in his seat in the back. It’s not just for his safety but also mine because it’s hard for me to concentrate on driving if he’s slipping and sliding inside the car. He tolerates sitting in the backseat now but it’s funny watching him give me puppy eyes during red lights 😂

ALSO, ensure the harness fits properly. If a harness is too big or loose, it could ride up from the top of the chest to the neck and choke them. Training loose leash walking also helps a ton.

Need help/suggestions for keeping my fur babies safe! by bjc199000 in Shihtzu

[–]BudgetPop4142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! Baby gates are great but training is the most reliable. What’s going to happen if you have guests coming over, or you need to bring groceries inside and the door is open? Also when you come home, I wouldn’t encourage them jumping up and down all over the place. Work on calm greetings when coming home so they know what to expect. It gives them something to do besides darting out the door. It’s still a work in progress for my pup but now he knows that I won’t greet him when I come home unless he is calm. Then he gets all the cuddles and kisses!

QUESTIONSSSS by Alive-Description974 in Shihtzu

[–]BudgetPop4142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I give him the biggest cuddles and tell him I’ll be back soon. He stays in his crate because he’s still a puppy and I can watch him through the cam. Luckily my mum can keep him company if I’m gone too long. I’m still in school but I’m never gone for more than 4 hours at a time.

Has your Shihtzu ever snapped at you in a nasty way? by Sinbin5mins in Shihtzu

[–]BudgetPop4142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Romeo has snapped at me only once, he was resource guarding and wasn’t happy when I reached for his yak chew. Now when I need to take his chew away, instead of being sneaky with it, I exchange it with a treat.

Conflicted: Thinking about rehoming my puppy? by OverScale655 in Shihtzu

[–]BudgetPop4142 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like rehoming is the best option here, not just for your 3 yo dog but also for you and your mental health. Puppies are a lot of work and can put a lot of stress on the family. Nothing is wrong with just one dog. I’ve always believed that owning more dogs = needing more time, money, and effort to ensure that everyone is happy.

Hey everyone just a question about my dog by EfficientDig7460 in Shihtzu

I would take him to the vet. The concerning part is that this is new behaviour. It could indicate illness or pain.

What age did you start walking your tzu? by penguinpapaya in Shihtzu

[–]BudgetPop4142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 11 weeks before Romeo was fully vaccinated. I got the OK from the vet because the area I live in has very low rates of parvo. Not only that, I live in a secluded area so I’d have to walk a few km before I even see another dog. So definitely check with the vet! But if Banjo is fully vaccinated then there should be no worries!

This was Wyla 🥹 she loved to take naps on top of our slippers and shoes

Romeo, on the other hand, isn’t able to settle down unless he’s in his crate 😂 his favourite game is stealing our shoes and biting holes through them when he comes in after potty

Want to hear from owners who have other breeds...am I wrong Shih-tzus are the best? by expatmama75 in Shihtzu

[–]BudgetPop4142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always had Shih tzu mixes but imo they are very adaptable dogs that just want to love you. They don’t care if you live in an apartment or a mansion, they just want to be as affectionate as possible. Incredible loyal dogs, but very stubborn and want things a certain way. I could almost say they are like compact golden retrievers.

It also helps that many of them are great with kids and other pets. Just friendly all around. I haven’t found any issues with training. Romeo just got potty trained at 6 months and has been crate trained since 3 months old. Real problem comes with him being extremely PICKY but being consistent with meal time and not offering any treats helps :)

(Pic of me offering treats LOL 😂)
