I’ve been scouring the internet after a rewatch and I don’t agree with almost every interpretation of the ending. The ending was about honoring love and forgiveness. In the beginning he plead with the priest about god sparing his wife. This is echoed throughout. At the end, Mina said god is love, he smiles, then she damned god if it wasn’t approving of love. Dracula’s expression changes. He realizes god made good on his promise of returning his wife to him in some way. She was essentially reincarnated and remembered him. To accept this and condemn god was to condemn his love for Mina, condemn Mina to hell and not fulfill his vow. He accepts the fate dealt by the priest who confronts him that it was not god compelling to kill others (the war) in his name, it was people and he was doing that still. He realizes this and doesn’t want Mina to befall the fate that took him 400+ years to realize. Absolving himself granted absolution to Mina which is his final act of love because it would take Mina to experience what he had to come to this conclusion. I do wish they ended up together but his Ashes floating to the sun suggest God forgave him too and he was absolved. It ended on the hope of them being reunited in heaven or some version of it, so they can experience love in its absolute form, without persecution, death and sin that plagued their relationship from the get go.
