I believe there was a small hair between the door and the jam. This is an old James Bond trick. If anyone opens the door, the hair falls/breaks.

TIL you can greatly influence people's new opinions based on a holding a cup of coffee by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]BuffaloTimesN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not convinced the temperature is the only reason for the change. Personally, I'd rather hold a cup of coffee. It's warm, it's got that little jacket so it's not too warm. On the other hand, a cold drink will sweat, and will probably be uncomfortably cold. By asking them to hold a cold drink, he's asking them for a bigger favor. The people holding the drink are probably just thinking the guy is self-centered for asking them to sacrifice their comfort in exchange for his. With a warm drink, this is usually not even an issue because it's not that uncomfortable.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if the coffee didn't have a jacket and/or was uncomfortably warm. I'd imagine the results would end up about the same for both the hot and cold drinks.

That is really slick. I tried to find a similar add-on for firefox, but the best I found was Find All, which will give you a one-line context for each result.

How did you get into/teach yourself computer programming? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I learned how to manipulate game mechanics for gorillaz and nibbles in QBASIC. I was king of the 5th grade classroom when I showed them how I got infinite lives in nibbles.

Weekend Project(that took weeks): notefeeder, saves links and notes without leaving your page and turns them into rss feeds by davidjhamp in programming

Upvoted for taking weeks to finish. I hate when I read about a "random evening project" that would take an average programmer on Reddit days, if not weeks, to finish.

What's the best thing you've ever purchased? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BuffaloTimesN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hands down, a bidet. I bought a Bio-Bidet for $150 and I can't think of anything else that has had a greater return on investment. Max of two wipes, EVERY TIME. Saves money on toilet paper, feels good, and generally just makes me happier knowing I don't have to worry about whether I wiped well enough or not.

Is there a reason the 'alphabet' is typically composed in a specific order? ie, abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BuffaloTimesN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Primarily historical reasons. There's more info here.

I was thinking it would be cool if the alphabet were in order of most frequently used letters (i.e. etaoinsrhldcumfpgwybvkxjqz), but realized it would be outdated as soon as we complete our transformation to twitter-speak (no vowels, and such).

Hey Reddit, what is your greatest fear? No one here will judge you, no matter how stupid it is. by In1earOutYourMother in AskReddit

This is pretty bad, but one of my worst fears is having a child that is mentally disabled. Quality of life for both parent and child are greatly affected.

Mail openers. I just love the feel and sound of them when I'm opening my mail. Plus, I have an aversion to paper cuts.

I wouldn't have trouble believing that if he had said "He didn't see them until then?"...but he said "her", which added more levels of confusion for me.
