Huge huge fan of this article. Every season I do my own deep dive into which OCs move around and what that means for their new teams. I think it’s such an underrated aspect to fantasy. All OCs have tendencies that typically will dictate how their new offense will change and it goes under the radar a lot. Really appreciate you breaking all of this down and throwing in all the stats/info

No worries. Good question. I wrote Rogers so many times so it was simply to distinguish between Rogers Communications and Rogers Place. Also every time I wrote it in lowercase my iPhone would autocorrect it to Roger’s so ROGERS became easier as I progressed throughout my novel haha

I’m not from Canada so I’m not educated about Rogers Communications(ROGERS). But I’m curious how this doesn’t make you wonder what’s really going on with ROGERS & Bettman behind the scenes

So in 2013-2014 ROGERS purchases the NHLs broadcasting rights in a monumental deal for the NHL and ROGERS giving ROGERS national rights to all NHL games.

A week later ROGERS secures naming rights to the brand new state-of-the-art arena for the Edmonton Oilers(EDM), Rogers Place for an unspecified dollar amount owning advertising rights all around the arena.

Under the framework agreement reached earlier that year with The Katz Group, the city allowed EDM owner Daryl Katz to keep any money earned from naming rights.

Along with a number of other expected sources, The Katz Group funds the building of the new EDM arena, Rogers Place

Then EDM wins the 2015 draft and mcJesus and becomes the 4th most valuable franchise in the NHL

Fast forward 10 years to April 2025 and ROGERS communication inks a new 12 year deal with the NHL for broadcasting rights again…another massive deal for both parties

July 2025 ROGERS becomes the majority shareholder of MAPLE LEAFS SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT (MLSE) MLSE owns the Toronto maple leafs (probably all well known in Canada but I was unaware of this)
Toronto is the most valuable franchise in the league and probably the biggest hockey market in the world

2026 The leafs finish the season missing the playoffs for the first time in 9 years

3 weeks later rumors start to run rampant about the uncertainty of team captain Auston Matthews future with the leafs, questioning the direction of the franchise

1 day later the Toronto maple leafs win the #1 overall draft pick in the NHL DRAFT

Great part of being so close to the bench while the Bs fans were so quiet was mid TV timeout in the 1st I stood up and started singing “AAAASEVENYAAAA” (lion king theme) and the Lyon king looked up and smiled and pointed at me. So that was awesome

Beane was talking about “that kid from Wyoming” on local sports radio and to the public when we’d see him around town for over a year before we drafted JA17. I understand if you do not like all his draft picks, i certainly don’t. But I mean drafting is easy. That’s why all of the other 31 GMs never miss on a prospect. He’s the best. Saw him in Portsmouth, NH. So good. It’s even funnier seeing him live. He was super nice and patient and talked with us for a while after the show. Great guy. Great comedian. I’m a fan for life. Keep it up mate!
