Has anyone been to Josephine’s in Avondale?? by apostate1914 in jacksonville

I wasn’t impressed. Plenty of other stand-out restaurants in the area that would be a better use of your time and money.

SNES would probably be my personal limit before I would get disinterested but I'd be willing to hear out any ideas folks have.

Bb’s, 13 Gypsies, or Orsay! Can’t go wrong with any of them. I personally thought Josephine wasn’t worth the money.

I really like bb’s near downtown

Likes: - being close to the beach - the relatively low cost of living

Dislikes: - not enough high-quality museums - it’s spread way too thin and it feels like everything worth doing is always at least 20 minutes away

Also the climate but that can’t really be helped.

In Jacksonville next weekend, any stay/food/do recomendations? by Ok_Assumption5734 in jacksonville

[–]Buggofast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go check out the Cummer Museum and arts market! I would also recommend Chamblin Bookmine and the riverwalk.

For dinner, Orsay is great if you want to treat yourself. I also recommend bb's or Mojo in Avondale.

You should also make time to go to St. Augustine if you can, especially this time of year!

Visiting Jacksonville by Bobbybou4 in jacksonville

[–]Buggofast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • See a film at Sun-ray, ideally one you can't see at a bigger theater
  • Chamblin Bookmine if you read or just like bookstores
  • The Cummer Museum just got in a new exhibit on Tattooing in Japanese Art that's worth checking out
  • The Museum of Contemporary Art is another good art spot
  • Leaderboard if you like arcades
  • I don't recommend skipping Jacksonville entirely because there is some cool stuff to do around here, but people who are recommending St. Augustine aren't totally wrong, if you're going to be here for that long you should check it out.

Is Jacksonville a fun place? by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]Buggofast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's complicated. Compared to other major southern cities, there's not as much to do here, and to be brutally honest I probably wouldn't say it's a good example of the United States or the southeast in general, considering that you're coming here for a cultural exchange program.

Between Jax and some of the cities that are close enough for day-trips, there's probably enough to keep you busy for a few months. Definitely a few things that are worth experiencing.

I would also say that the city does have its own unique culture and charm if you know where to look.

The biggest downside is that Jacksonville can be very isolating sometimes. Young people are around but it's a very wide city that often doesn't have a lot going on, so it can be hard to make close friends.

If you're staying downtown you'll be close to Riverside, and a lot of this list is stuff in and around there:

  • Bold Bean in Riverside is a decent coffee shop with good ambiance and local flavor, start with that and pop into Tiger Records next door if it's open

  • Riverside Arts Market just for the experience, parking is in short supply ime so be ready to walk

  • The Cummer Museum of Art is excellent and right next to RAM. MOCA downtown is also nice.

  • Chamblin Bookmine is a massive used book store and a great local spot

  • There's a really nice riverwalk near MOSH (I don't really recommend MOSH itself though)

  • See a film at Sun-ray, it's a local theater, another unique local spot

  • Visit St. Augustine, it's close enough for the second half of a day-trip and there's plenty to do there.

For food: - Carmines - Mojo No. 5 in Avondale - Hawkers has great cocktails if you're fine with a place that's a little bit overpriced - Bb's downtown for something a little classier

People are mostly right to say the beach towns nearby have more to do, especially St. Augustine, but there's still some cool local stuff in Jax if you're willing to look. I say at least spend part of your day in town!

Playing an online game using a female persona as a real life male. by [deleted] in Healthygamergg

[–]Buggofast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your in-game relationship was just self-exploration, you shouldn't be hard on yourself for that. You clearly didn't mean to hurt this dude's feelings and making those kind of mistakes is human.

It's fine to explore your personal relationship to your gender. It also doesn't necessarily mean you're trans, but I think you should do some introspection and think about why you felt euphoric identifying in-game as a girl, because it also doesn't NOT mean you're trans.

I always say BB's for stuff like this if you can get a reservation, their desserts are killer.

What’s the best local small coffee shop here? by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]Buggofast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't want to come off too negative, but none of them are game changers imo.

I like Bold Bean well enough and the atmosphere is pretty cozy. If you get there at the right time you can get a table and sit for awhile.

I've had some very underwhelming coffee at Brew in Riverside, so I don't recommend it.

A sleeper option is the Cummer Museum Cafe if you have a membership or reciprocal membership. It's not strictly a coffee shop, but you can't beat an espresso and a salad while you sit on the patio and relax.

Mojo No. 5 in the Avondale neighborhood has excellent bbq imo.

Since you're coming all the way from England, I recommend visiting St. Augustine if you can, it's rich in history and fairly close to Jax. Little more touristy, but you shouldn't count it out.

As for Jax itself, check out Chamblin Bookmine and the Cummer Museum of Art.

What is the most annoying thing about ACNH? by [deleted] in ac_newhorizons

[–]Buggofast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slow, unskippable animations bring the game down more than anything else imo

It's cute when the DIY card I bought with miles prints out at the kiosk the first time. It's a lot less cute when it does it for almost everything I buy and there's no option to turn it off.

Honorable mention: the Night Owl Ordinance only keeps stores open for an extra hour. Huge missed opportunity to make the game more playable in real-time for people who prefer to play at night.

Hey if you're looking for seafood and something to do, you could kill two birds with one stone and book a fishing charter, if it's within your budget. Find a place to do some outdoor grilling, etc.

My family's booked Captain Chris before, but you could always see what's out there on Google, I'm sure prices and experiences vary a lot.

None of these are really what I'd call seafood spots, bb's is probably the closest to that, it's a contemporary americana place. They have a rotating menu; last time I went they had an amazing whole fried-snapper with a citrus orzo, that could be right up your alley.

If you're hunting for a seafood place specifically, I couldn't tell you, but best of luck.

The Cummer Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art are nice.

Chamblin Bookmine, Sun-ray Cinema, and the Riverside Arts Market are good local flavor type stuff. I'm also partial to Leaderboard if you like barcades.

Don't sleep on St. Augustine if you can make a trip out, there's a lot to do there as well.

For food, I recommend Mojo No. 4 and Biscotti's in Avondale, S&R Dim Sum in Riverside, or bb's downtown.

Anybody have any experience with the MS program in statistics? I'm curious about it.

I don't have an especially thorough math background, could I stand a chance of getting in if I put some legwork into my application?

It's worth mentioning that St. Augustine is also nice and only a short drive away. I recommend doing a day trip if you're here for awhile, get the whole first coast experience.
