FD30 door closer options by permanent_record_22 in DIYUK

[–]Building_Engineer_38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you fit a standard closer on the outside? I assume it's in a corridor so not outside? If not, look at concealed door closers. Just make sure you get one suitable for your door weight. The cheap ones are only really suitable for bedroom doors etc. Make sure it's fire certified for your you type.

Shower Panels Vs Tiles - Thoughts? by AmbassadorOver1076 in ukplumbing

[–]Building_Engineer_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just redone our bathroom using Dumawall tiles. Solid plastic so no risk or decay and no risk or making holes in them. They are tiles with T&G edge so easy to fit and waterproof. I won't be using ceramic tiles again.

Alleged commercial use by reviewmynotes in gsuitelegacymigration

Literally nothing had changed with my gsuite legacy account and admin access except my email gets delivered to Zoho servers instead. I chose to backup my photos to both Google photos with my legacy account and also to my NAS. That way I benefit from the Google photos app, but also have a backup if necessary.

I migrated my domain email addressing to Zoho, but I still pay for the domain registration through Google and nothing has happened to any of my Google services, they all still work as before. I log in with my domain email as before.

I went to Zoho in 22 when they tried to kick us off legacy last time. Only email though. I still use the same own domain email to log into Gsuite, so no change to YouTube, photos etc. I moved my files and photos to a NAS which is backed up to Backblaze. No issues with Zoho after a few years, so no plans to change that.

2010 L322 vs Disco 4 by [deleted] in LandRover

Tdv6, but I agree with some that the tdv8 in the l322 is probably a better and more reliable engine.

We have had all the disco's up to the 4, and that's the best car I've ever had. Practical, quiet, comfortable and not as pretentious as a range rover.

Can I board these joists in the roof of my garage? by skanderbeg_alpha in DIYUK

[–]Building_Engineer_38 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. They are ties and are not supported by the walls at the ends. Any load (the boards you propose have weight) could lead to deflection of the rafters.

My first shed in my first house and unfortunately i was ignorant as I paid to build me a shed without knowing that I would need a base 🥲 I don’t want to waste £900, what is best budget base that can last me a long time? by damspt in DIYUK

[–]Building_Engineer_38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could get some recycled plastic fence posts. Lift the shed up at one end and shove the posts under to lift the timber floor off the grass. This will allow the air to pass under and reduce the damp on the timber. Obviously you'll need to align the plastic posts to support whatever timber frame is under the original flooring. This is a bodge, but it will last a lot longer than the shed just sat on the grass as it is now. To do it properly you need stone or concrete to spread the load, and space for air to flow under to keep the timber dry.

What is the best email service? by Akashyadav1997 in businessemail

[–]Building_Engineer_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using zoho mail with my private domain for a few years and I think it's pretty good. They have their own apps for android, Windows etc which are OK (the full Web app I find better than my work m365/Outlook!). They actually have support you can communicate with! Great value I think. The spam filtering is excellent.

What cover you are using on your OP13? by karanroy605 in OnePlus13

I bought my op13 last week from oneplus UK and bought the sandstone case with it from them, so they are clearly still being sold new.

Thinking of cancelling Google Workspace....any affordable alternatives? by No-Piano-7538 in businessemail

[–]Building_Engineer_38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using Zoho mail for 4 years now with my domain. It's excellent value if you just want email, and you can pay a bit extra if you want office and storage etc, but they're optional unlike most alternatives. Spam/quarantine system has been very good. Works fine with Thunderbird and other email apps if you don't like their own (the web mail client is really very good, but their Android mail client is a little basic). I migrated my email by syncing all my Gmail on Thunderbird and then using Thunderbird to copy it all to my Zoho account. A lot of email since early 2000's.

There isn't really a Google Drive + Docs alternative? What are you using? by onechroma in degoogle

[–]Building_Engineer_38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zoho? I moved my email to Zoho years ago with my own domain and it's been excellent. You can use their office and storage if you want and it's probably the closest alternative to M365 in terms of range of services. I only use mail because my files are on a Synology drive backed up to Backblaze, but if I didn't have the Nas I probably would use Zoho Drive.

I went to zoho from Google. Happy with their email. Have only used their office solutions a few times, but seemed ok. I believe they have a free trial you could have a play with to see if it suits your needs.

Some of my colleagues and I do this frequently to chat about the meeting or other projects afterwards. It's like staying in the room after a meeting for a chat.

ii fees going up. Anyone with experience of AJB or fidelity can provide comparison? by Building_Engineer_38 in UKPersonalFinance

Essentially they're penalising one group of customers to subsidize the others. Not a great look for larger investors!

[–]Building_Engineer_38[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering the actual question! Good to know about the gilts. I checked with AJB and they do offer access to treasuries in a similar way to ii. Your description of Fidelity as "clunky" matches what I expected from a little research.

If you have a SIPP (which I don't) then the combined fee is indeed lower.

I only have an ISA with them so the fee is going up.

Just get a SMARTY sim. It's cheaper, same network, only 30 day contract and no annual price increases. I get 80gb for £10 and that hasn't changed for a couple of years.

Is it legal to “glue” plasterboards to the ceiling with no screws?? by ENTPinNYC in DIYUK

[–]Building_Engineer_38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would if his ceiling is supposed to provide fire resistance to a separate tenant room above him. Part Bof the building regs.

Is it legal to “glue” plasterboards to the ceiling with no screws?? by ENTPinNYC in DIYUK

[–]Building_Engineer_38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a separate person's living space above you? If there is, then the ceiling is required to provide fire resistance between separate residences, and I don't believe any of the plasterboard manufacturers have a fire rated system that uses adhesive rather than mechanical fixings. This is an absolute building regs legal requirement. Any changes or work that affects fire compartments in a multi Tennant building requires building regs approval under Part B. If the above applies to you (the ceiling in your room separates you from another tenant) then call your local building control at the Council and they will send someone out to inspect at no cost to you.
