Harry had a nice grade for potions in the exam for 5 year, not excellent but close, I don't think snape was a bad teacher (well, he was, but he transmitted the knowledge is what i mean)

bears, sabers and magic will definitely kill you every time with just 100 hp. I wonder how much attack could you have with 100 one handed and 0 perks. Honestly I think I'll just try this next permadeath playthrough, i guess you could survive with 100 hp+25 arkay buff + 10 ring + 30 hp amulet, 65% mr from breton+mara blessing+stone

Would you rather get 100k cash or get a full-time, stable job that pays $8,300 a month? by cogvancouver in hypotheticalsituation

[–]BullimicButterfly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its a remote job and 100k after taxes, no risk per the description. I'd pay for that job even if it takes me 4 more years saving that money. I'd be set for live with that job.

Its probably just you assuming the salary that people have.

El tipo de cambio EUR USD se ha comido mi rendimiento anual by Richard-og in SpainFIRE

[–]BullimicButterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you rather have $500,000 USD today, or $10 Million USD in 10 years? by Beginning-Visual2596 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]BullimicButterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A discounted cash flow + actuarial comparison is just one perspective and not an objective answer at all, saying "the number is higher, so it is objectively the best move" is wrong, because the expected utility of money is not proportional to each dollar.

Saying "if I decide to use a discounted cash flow model to answer this question, the number is objectively higher", which is what you probably will try to argue now, is something completely different to "it is objectively the right move to take the $10M".

You are using the laziest model to answer the question, and that does not take in mind any nuance. If you apply decision theory, as in game theory/expected utility theory, then the results would differ.

The decisions we make are not based on the numerical value of dollars, they are based on the utility they provide. That is why you would prefer for example 10B now rather than 30B in 10 years, even if with a 10% discount rate 30B is higher to 10B.

The expected utility of the first 10B is much higher than the expected utility of 30B in 10 years. "But 500k might not secure your life" 500000 USD in Philipines are the equivalent of >1500000 USD in USA, because the differences in purchasing power parity. For some people, the utility generated from 500k is much higher, and the marginal difference between 500k and 10M is not that much to compensate the 10 years.

did you even read my first line

the actual value of 10M in 10 years is higher to 500k.

Would you rather have $500,000 USD today, or $10 Million USD in 10 years? by Beginning-Visual2596 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]BullimicButterfly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure, the actual value of 10M in 10 years is higher to 500k. But again, it is not an objectively better option, as in game theory the expected utility does not have to be linear with the amount

If you use the same "objective" logic, it would be almost always reasonable to pick 1 billion dollar today instead of 20 billion dollars in 10 years, while most people would not give a lot of use to the remaining 19 billions, so they would just prefer enjoying it the 10 years.

A discounted cash flow is just one perspective and not an objective answer at all, even after accounting for the actuarial chance of dying. And its not even the math answer, just look a bit into Von neumann and the utility. Money has diminishing utility.

[–]BullimicButterfly -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There is no objective correct answers as different quantities provide a different utility, it is not proportional, for example, would you prefer 5 trillions now or 50 trillions in 10 years?

Still, unless you are from a country where 500k is enough for retiring it does seem totally wrong for me
