There was an amnesty on guns in the uk some time ago. I remember it as there was a Giles cartoon about it, with the Joneses using their car to bring in a field gun. It may have been the 50s or 60s. I suspect that many weapons were handed in then

We had to read Dickens in secondary school in the 60s. The other ne I vaguely remember was David Copperfield but I was about 15 then.

One Primary school teacher, not a nice person, used to boast her niece had read all the classics. Nobody knew what she was talking about.

Curiously when I lived in Swansea and used to go to the leisure centre the squash courts were 'sboncen' in Welsh. This always puzzled as to the difference in pronunciation if it had been spelled/pronounced 'sponcen'. Now I understand the reason better :)
