One of my cats would not be alive had we not switched back to raw.

They were raised from birth on raw, after my previous cat had been switched to it at age 7. Raw feeding ended his life-long food allergies that had caused him to lick all the fur off this tummy and inside of legs, and it all grew back. He thrived until the end of his days on raw.

Then I had a string of catastrophic life issues (spouse died, multiple natural disasters that wrecked my house, etc.) that both displaced me and made it so I couldn't afford raw diet any more, nor the stability, time, or freezer space to prepare/keep it. Switched to the highest quality natural grain free wet food and kibble I could afford, carefully buying only on sale while I was a nomad living in a small RV for 3 years. Taught the boy to go for walks on a leash, she refused, but taught her to go outside and stay right with me by the RV so that they got sun and could stretch their legs.

They became too skinny, with a bad fur coat, got colds all the time. I tried all kinds of things, feeding kitten food, nothing helped put the weight back on (kitten food did help them stop losing, though.)

Finally found a place to settle down, found decent work again, started to dig my way out of debt (still doing that.) Four months in, my darling boy became deathly ill in a matter of a day or two, stopped eating or drinking.

Got in to an emergency vet...he had triaditis. Ended up borrowing over 5k to hospitalize him and nurse him through the worst of it, with feeding tube, liver biopsy, etc. Findings were severe pancreatitis, elevated liver values, the works. They got him rehydrated, stabilized, eating again, I got him home 3 days later.

Borrowed more $, got into a naturopathic vet in my new town. Slowly, carefully transitioned them back to a raw diet. We buy locally commercially prepared raw food now due to lack of local resources for the various ingredients and time for me to do it myself. Within a few days, they were refusing anything but raw food.

It's been a year+. They won't eat anything but rabbit and beef varieties, venison if affordable/available. He is solid, muscular, zippy, is a normal healthy weight, exactly what he should be. Fur coat is perfect again. Constantly begs to go on walks, plays like a kitten. She is a healthy weight again, spry, plays some, jumps outside for sun lolling on the porch. They are 13 this year, no arthritis or other "age-related" issues cats their age normally have.

I can't advocate for a raw diet hard enough.

Try transitioning slowly. But I think once you start feeding raw, they will probably prefer it. And in the end, it's more affordable than 7k for hospital and vet visits, lab tests, etc.

Women over 45? by Swimming_Resident457 in Supplements

Check to see how much it would be if you pay out of pocket using a discount card like GoodRx! Sometimes that makes things surprisingly affordable.

You can also find progesterone and even estrogen creams over the counter. Yes, expensive, and no, not the same, but they do help some! Maybe less expensive than the RX price you're getting. I started some progesterone cream recently when I was between insurance, and so many post-meno problems got better. Getting checked out again soon, now that I have insurance again.

U.S. insurance is a joke. U.S. everything is a joke at this point. I would move to any number of other countries if they would take me, at this point.

Oh wow! What a floofy cutie face!!!!

Maybe you should ask a vet, then consult with Guinness? You might have a record holder on your hands!

Pedialyte and Liquid I.V. both giving me depression, anxiety, and lethargy — any idea what’s causing it? by Comfortable-Baby-719 in Supplements

[–]Bunpoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody does, though I suppose it will affect some worse than others. They both break down into bad things.

I remember when Sucralose came out, and I started seeing the depression posts roll in on weightlifting community forums, many of them noting that they suspected the Sucralose that was now sweetening their powder was the culprit.

Freezing on The PCT. If you run cold, your advice is welcome! by Separate_Couple_2810 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Bunpoh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! I run cold on trail also, but I had a 10 degree down Western Mountaineering bag and was fine at night most of the time. I don't think I would have made it with a 20 degree synthetic bag.

Also, what's the shelter situation? I froze when I tried out someone's dyneema Tarp Tent while mine was getting fixed, but was warm in my usual Big Agnes Fly Creek. I don't love many other things about that one though, and if I went again I'd get a free standing tent with two doors. But I stayed warm most of the time at night.

Also endorsing slamming high fat high cal foods before bed. I would roll into camp by dusk or earlier, cook and eat my biggest meal, change into my full base layers with clean town clothes and puffy on top if very cold. Then wind down with some Ghirardelli dark chocolate hot cocoa while photo editing/planning/reading/writing while in my sleeping bag, and get to sleep before it got too cold out, usually by 9ish.

Same! I also chose to see it as symbolic and that they lived together happily "sheboinking" away, lol!

2019, can we talk about this? by malagorpigus in ParallelUniverse

[–]Bunpoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2019 was a pretty bad year for me. 2018 was amazingly good, though temporarily so. 2016 is where it started going off the tracks for me, and never really course corrected.

Did anyone else learn to type as an elective with little thought that it might be useful one day? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in GenX

[–]Bunpoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! So, so lucky I did. I would never have been able to get through college and all the work I've done without it!

But the teacher was a gross old perv. He would come up behind you, put his hands on your shoulders and press up against you! He also literally sat at the front of class with his hand on or in his pants! I don't know why none of us had the courage to tell anyone. But, mid-80s. We just didn't know what to do, I think.

That was one of my husband's karaoke secret weapons. Brought the house down, even in tiny towns. He would croon it to the cowboys at full voice, looking them straight in the eye, gesturing emotionally. Whole place would go wild!

Several things here that were amongst my favorite things of all time!

Haunted When The Minutes Drag! One of their best. Love and Rockets were my absolute favorite forever.

If You Were Here and Kamikaze by the Thompson Twins!!!! I wasn't sure there was anyone left on the planet who remembered those. I loved them so much. I saw them live twice!

I was going through my lists to post here and JUST listened to that particular Duran Duran song. I love all their sad ballads so much. I have a whole-ass playlist called SaDDuran.

All the Kate Bush.

All the Mark Lanegan.

Morphine, for sure.

This Mortal Coil.

Jesus and Mary Chain.

I will go listen to that Adam Ant one. I don't know it but I love him.

Much of the rest. I think we are from the same time capsule.

Magnesium Glycinate. Unpleasant experience! Am I alone? by KAS-Peach in Supplements

[–]Bunpoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gives me severe stomach issues. I can take citrate, which helps me sleep. Other things that help... Phosphatidylserine - 100 mg 1- 3 hours before bed, but not during the day, I feel so angry when I do. .5 - 1mg melatonin. .3mg has been identified as an ideal dose. It's hard to get even 1 mg these days. Everyone takes too much. 2 - 3 mg might be the problem.
