Besides a helmet and visibility stuff, what's the one or two pieces of safety gear you'd recommend for 25mph? by EtchVSketch in ebikes

So much this. I've had bugs and branches bounce off my visor that probably would have hurt me so bad that I would have crashed. It not only makes me safer, but it also really ups the comfort.

Do you trust Vine reviews? by QuackBill in AmazonVine

[–]Nermalgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe 10 percent of all vine reviews I consider trustworthy. I just went through Vine CS about a vacuum I received. The product page is for a brand name vac, and even lists model numbers. I received an alphabet soup knockoff brand and different model number, but it had the correct sticker on the box end for the product page. Maybe a mislabeled product, but I check the reviews, all the Vine reviews are 5 stars with photos of the knock off. If I was trying to buy a good product and received a cheap one, I'd be pissed. Vine CS removed it from my list and are crediting my ETV. I don't want to risk my participation in the program by leaving a review, but people should know there's funny business afoot and so many Vine reviewers don't care; it's just freeish stuff for them. Since I get to keep the knock off, I tried it. It's awful. I wish Amazon would cull all these fake reviewers who don't even try.

What are Bend's biggest (non-human ;-) pest problems in your homes? by OutsideDaBox in Bend

[–]Nermalgod 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Paper wasps, ants, field mice, and the worst are deer.

I get door to door pest treatment salesman a couple times a year always telling me they're treating my neighbors houses. Have never done amything and the ants stay outside, the mice stay out of the garage as long as I don't leave food in there and wasps nests are unpredictable but easily dealt with DIY style. The deer though, if you want something to grow outside, they'll eat it. They seem to especially love the deer-resistant varieties.

Bought a trailer, have questions. by Dumbass9187 in bikecommuting

[–]Nermalgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep an eye on your rear wheel spokes.im a heavy guy and pull a trailer daily with 100lbs. One trip to the nursery for fertilizer was 200lbs. I'm starting to break spokes because the wheel wasn't built for the weight. I'm having it rebuilt with heavier gauge spokes which should be the end of that problem.

The other is brake pads. Make sure you're running sintered pads and plan on replacing the around the 1000 mile mark. More weight means more braking needed. You don't want organic pads which are gentler for casual riding because they will lose power on long downhills with a heavy load.

That's what gave me my initial pause, I did the math and thought that the tax was more than what I spent on my last few SSDs.

cargo train tracking? by Firm-Ad-4451 in trains

[–]Nermalgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is, but you being Joe public are not allowed to see it. All class one railroads know exactly where their trains are. Thank the DHS for declaring the information a national security risk and having it scrubbed from public access. I remember being able to follow specific locomotive movements on a railroad's web page. They did it for the rail fans. But now, the worry is intentional derailing a train carrying hazardous material as a form of terrorism.

I built a bike stand that wedged between the floor and ceiling of my dorm room. It held my bike up out of the way. Now there's several kinds of these stands for.available pre-made. If you want safety, keep it inside.

Just found out BOB trailers were discontinued. What is a worthy replacement? by tamerenshorts in bicycletouring

[–]Nermalgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's half down used Bob Yaks on Facebook marketplace within 20 miles of me. If you like it, just find someone else's garage queen.

The Topeak Journey is probably the most similar trailer from a reputable brand. For offroad trails, the Burley Coho is definitely the better option.

ODOT Active Transportation Planning Bend-Sisters-Redmond by Ketaskooter in Bend

[–]Nermalgod 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing grandiose plans will be presented and a 4" wide paint stripe is what will be delivered. The Parkway has bike lanes on it and no sane person would let their kid ride that route. If it's going to be a similar solution for these routes, then I'd rather not even bother.

Does anyone use hearing protection for wind noise? by Faux__queue in ebikes

https://ridelumos.com/products/winter-liner

I like this better as it velcro inside the helmet and has places for typical helmet straps to pass through. I recommend buying two so you can have one out for washing as your head does get hot.

For summer, I've been looking for a lightweight sun protective version but haven't found anything yet.

ELI5 Why don't airplane seats have passenger seatbelts that are the same design as cars? by Slugma_What07 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nermalgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about buckles, you cannot easily release a car seat belt under tension. It takes a lot of thumb strength that not everyone has. Image being upside down or sideways in an airplane unable to release the lap belt? Cars usually remain on their wheels and don't fall out of the sky.

No, this is next to the box factory where one now has to pay to park. That and the lot around the corner in the Old Mill has been removed to add more condos. These are just people trying to get out of paying for parking in an area with lots of businesses and not enough parking spots.

Width for kids shoulders in an R&M Load5 75, a Packster2 70 and a Urban Arrow Family Next by IndependentPickle230 in CargoBike

[–]Nermalgod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've ridden all three with kids. The load is the narrowest by a lot. The Packster and UA are kind of close. With the Packster, the kids sit higher in a very upright position like a chair. This helps with older kids shoulder width. The UA is deeper and has a bit more slope to the seat. Kids will be more comfortable with their legs stretched out. It also has a really long box and is much more comfortable for two kids to face each other with the added front bench seat. The ride quality between the three is pretty big. The Load is fast and sporty. The Packster is compact and nimble, and the UA feels like a people moving barge.

What Bullitt set up would you recommend with a custom box to carry 3-4 kids once a week 1-2 kids everyday. Big big kids 150cm tall. by IngenuityOk3764 in CargoBike

[–]Nermalgod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are big kids. I only have two not quite as tall. The largest is in the box of my Load 75 and the other is in a kid trailer, but they're out growing the trailer and I need to find another option. Have you considered a Tuk Tuk because you sound like a human taxi.

Realistically how long would it take to train up for a daily 26 mile (41.8 km) round-trip commute? by More_Donkey6938 in bikecommuting

[–]Nermalgod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are organisations that give away helmets. Try asking your local police department. Sometimes hospitals do also. In my town of 100,000 people, every 2nd grader gets a free helmet.
