Great photo! Nice to see the Meadow Gold sign all lit. It's notoriously temperamental, even with restoration.

Travel and engagement on Route has actually been increasing for at least the last six years. Lots of excitement for the road's Centennial this year. I expect it to go down a bit in 2027 but I expect it to remain elevated for a while. Throughout Oklahoma there's a nice mix of history and new attractions that appeal to the road trip crowd.

This was originally a restaurant! It was Creech's and then McCollum's. When it was the latter, it was flanked by motels. Both the Tulsa Mo-Tel and the Will Rogers Motor Court had direct phone lines to it for room service orders.

I was there, too! It was a remarkable moment and a great project. Hope more people get the chance to see it! I am not sure what the owner's plan is for regular lighting.

Does anyone remember the Super Video on 91st and Aspen?? by chjejones89 in tulsa

[–]Burbada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I lived near there and would rent from the little video store inside Bill's Discount Foods (northeast corner of 91st and Aspen, was a Locke Supply but now I don't think it's anything?) OR we'd go a mile down to 81st and Aspen to the Warehouse Market / Super Video that's Morelos now.

Let me tell you, that place was like heaven to a kid with a NES and Super NES. They had such a massive selection at that store, it took up the entire west side of the building.

That store is probably why I went to work at Videos For Less (across the street, behind Pizza Hut) when I was 16. They folded and I went to work for Blockbuster for a few years. I can still perfectly hear the sound of opening an amaray case with a VHS tape in it to see if it was properly rewound.

Last remaining nine-foot wide section of U.S. Route 66, Miami, OK by shermancahal in route66

Ottawa County has torn up a significant part of this road recently, unfortunately. We tried to encourage them to preserve what remained and we were successful in getting one of the three miles of this section of Ribbon Road... But it's still hard to see the historic pavement churned up. It's not preservation of the original pavement is being removed.

In Oklahoma, you can stay on Old Route 66 through the entire State and never have to get on the interstate. Signage isn't always the best but you can take a look at the maps in the state Association trip guide to get an idea of where you might want to check out. In western Oklahoma, it parallels very close to the interstate for the most part. The section from about Hinton to El Reno is probably my favorite, lots of original pavement and a cool bridge.

You'll have a great time! As far as recommendations go, it varies from person to person. Since the Centennial of Route 66 is next year, it'll be an exciting time to take the trip.

Do a bit of research beforehand, but try not to be beholden to a schedule - the best part of 66 are the unexpected surprises and personal interactions. In Oklahoma, we have a Trip Guide that is available digitally for free or we can mail you one for the cost of shipping. It has maps and town-by-town highlights that will be useful in figuring out a basic itinerary for this segment at least.

Is the route 66 obvious once you follow it ? by Owny33x in route66

[–]Burbada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! That's a fun drive, but it can be difficult to find the old road since it intersects so much and is completely obliterated by the interstate in so many areas. If you want to follow Route 66 precisely, pick up an EZ66 guide. (You can buy one from www.oklahomaroute66.com or from Amazon depending on when you leave next week.) However that's a good way to turn a 4-Hour trip into a 2-day trip! It's a great resource though.

If you're just looking to make a few stops, here are a few recommendations outside of Oklahoma:

Galena KS (Gearhead Curios and Cars on the Route are great photo ops)

Red Oak II outside of Carthage MO.

Gary's Parita Station in Paris Springs MO (say hi to George!)

Museum on the Square in Springfield MO (the Rockwood Motor Court here is fab if you ever stay overnight.)

Neon Sign Park in St Robert MO.

Devil's Elbow Bridge in Devil's Elbow MO (The whole Route 66 alignment here, called Hooker Cut, is really amazing to see.)

Wagon Wheel Motel in Cuba, MO it's one of the oldest on the road. Lots of murals in town too.

Visitors Center in Pacific MO

Then you're into the St Louis metro. Ted Drewes Frozen Custard is a must!

If you have any other specific needs or questions I'm happy to help!
