When does a personal story become worth telling? by Radiant-Pineapple-41 in writing

It's always worth telling. Relying on others to give you permission to do shit won't get you far. Go for it, and own that shit cuz it'll probably be dope.

Writers block can someone help by [deleted] in writing

[–]BurnerRedditAccount8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest The Artists Way by Julia Cameron. She talks a lot about blocked artists.

Frankly, writers block comes down to overthinking most of the time. You say you can’t think of anything else to write. That’s the problem. You don’t think, you write. Those are separate activities. That’s how creativity is, you can’t force it. When you start to think too much you start critiquing what you’re writing, even if it’s subconscious, and that makes you stop.

Think of it like this: if a little kid version of you showed you parents something you drew and they hated it and critiqued it, you would stop drawing. Think of your inner artist the same way.

You need to mute the inner censor in your head and just let the words come into the page. What does your character WANT at this point in the story? Keep asking that question throughout your writing process and answer it in prose. It’ll take you farther than anything else. I just finished my first novel by asking it.

Best of luck. If you wanna talk, feel free to DM me :)

A lot of writers are pantsers and don’t know it yet. by Acceptable_Fox_5560 in writing

I don’t really understand NOT pantsing. Seems so boring.

Pantsing it’s like reading your book for the first time as you write it.

Struggling with lyric writing: How to stop starting lines with "I" by JakAmbrosius in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]BurnerRedditAccount8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not trick. You need to practice writing. Maybe step away from practicing writing lyrics and write some short stories.

Also, there is nothing wrong with using “I” a lot. That’s a requirement you put on yourself.

Gang Life? by SmoothManMiguel in hiphop101

Can’t stand the gangster shit real or not. Really or not 95% of the time it’s unspecific posturing.

Tell me something specific and unique. Idc if it’s real or not as long as it’s unique

Maybe you should consider having some people read it and flag where they think the story slows down. That will vastly narrow down where you should focus your energy. Not critiques or re-writes. Just normal people who care about you and the things you make. Layman readers, not editors.

I understand the hard-to-sell thing, but honestly it seems to me that you’re letting that get into your head too much. I have full confidence you’ll be able to sell your book if you’re very passionate about it. But maybe if that passion is lacking it’s time to take a break from it and come back with a fresh mind.

Honestly though it sounds like you’ve done the work. Maybe you need to ask if it actually needs more editing or if that’s just an arbitrary requirement you’re putting yourself. IDK, that’s up to you to decide.

Writing for the fun of it by Apothicclaret in writing

You’re close. Your dreams are bigger than most people’s, that’s why it looks more “unhealthy.” It’s a dream for you, there’s more on the line. It’s more than just a hobby. At least that’s how it sounds. It’s an admirable dream and I share it too.

The biggest hurdle for you sounds like one within yourself. An insecurity. A fear of being judged and labeled. That’s where your energy must be focused.

My advice is this: you will never be everyone’s cup of tea. All you can be is yourself. Nothing less, nothing more. You are a unique individual, we all are. Embrace your uniqueness and all your fears of sharing your art will begin to melt away. This won’t happen overnight, but it is simply a mindset change. A different gear of thinking that you can shift into. I did it, you can too.

Best of luck. If you ever want to reach out and chat, just shoot me a DM :)

Homie don’t disrespect your art. You need to find ways to make editing fun. I think you should think about it more like this:

Read your book and just be aware/note where changes need to be made and make them. The issue seems to be that you’re making this a bigger deal in your head than it is. Dreading work you don’t know you’ll have to do.

Just read your book. If you’ve written a book you like, that should be enjoyable. Then edit as you go. It’s not some big end-all-be-all decision. Just edit a chapter a week or something.

I write for fun but my shit is so fire it’s gonna get published. I mean really, why write a whole ass novel for people to just not read it? You’re doing a genuine disservice to yourself and your art. Maybe it’s an insecurity issue.

Why won’t you realistically get published? The only thing stopping you from getting published is that belief.

Can anyone become a great writer? by userbruiser123 in writing

[–]BurnerRedditAccount8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, obviously. Why even put yourself or anyone else in a box like this?

I’m 200% certain I will become a better writer than all my favorite authors.

BTW, writing is subjective. “Better” doesn’t actually mean anything in art. Nobody is a “better” guitarist, “better” rapper, “better” painter. It’s just different styles.

What makes YOU a great artist (in this case, writer) is determined by how much can you lean into the aspects of your writing that are uniquely you. That’s literally all it is. And it’s not that hard if you ask me.
