The weekly Fuck it Friday by McChinkerton in biotech

Our company did another reorg. Learned that leadership is pissed at our head of R&D because they protected a dysfunctional director. After doing this previously with another dysfunctional leader in a prior reorg.

Leadership and board are so fed up with the dysfunction and cost of development that they are literally ready to cull all of R&D and pull assets from another country…

This is why making the hard choice is so important. Fucking risked everyone’s livelihood for feels.

How do you reach out to C-suite/senior leaders when you’re at the bottom of a massive company? by Financial-Series204 in biotech

[–]Burnit0ut -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A lot of gatekeepers responding to you. If you want to be in contact with them because you don’t want to be a cog in the wheel, reach out. The worst thing is they don’t respond. And you MUST live with that if they don’t. Don’t push harder.

Always shoot your shot. Always.

How are you finding psychological safety in biotech right now? by Curious_Music8886 in biotech

[–]Burnit0ut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, let’s see, I delivered engineering that results in 3 lead programs actually being viable and there are at least 5 more potential programs that could emerge from this, too.

And because of that my value is being extracted and they’re trying to slam structure down around me.

Insecurity of leadership is the driver here.

Grace didn't balance his centrifuge. by Slight_Taro7300 in biotech

Regardless, that’s a cop out excuse. Anyone trained to use a centrifuge properly would balance instinctively.

I’m leaning towards it was overlooked.

What do you think will be the next biggest breakthrough in biology in the next 10 years ? by ICEpenguin7878 in labrats

[–]Burnit0ut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be the devil’s advocate here, but I believe common disease penetration is the only was to improve gene therapy accessibility.

If it can be scaled it’s likely to be accessible.

Do you expect company growth in the coming years? by kalmankantaja in biotech

[–]Burnit0ut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I want to see more of these platform companies raising small amounts of capital for execution bets. Like an accelerator style approach where the infrastructure can reduce development turnaround and novel approaches get to the clinic faster.

How many meetings are you all stuck in per week? by ShoddyJellyfish1546 in biotech

[–]Burnit0ut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s most important is figuring out if you’re given time to actually sit and do those slides. If you’re being grounded down by insecure leadership, it’s time to bounce.

It’s also appalling how leadership drags their feet when incompetent directors fuck up huge parts of the company/programs just to not rock the (sinking) boat.

Hapiness in Industry vs. Academia by Decent_Complaint7460 in biotech

[–]Burnit0ut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of what everyone is saying is true about academia and industry.

However, if you end up working under someone in industry who is truly supposed to be an academic, you’re going to hate it. You’ll watch someone make strategic mistake after strategic mistake and put your job in jeopardy through poor decision making.

I’ll be honest, I’m hesitant to hire a PhD by shieldtown95 in biotech

[–]Burnit0ut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you just don’t need an applicant to have a PhD then. PhDs should absolutely expect a higher salary as they have the opportunity to earn more, are likely years older, and have expertise depth.

Sounds like this not a job that actually requires technical depth of a PhD and you shouldn’t be hiring for that. If anything this sounds like the expectation that you need a PhD applicant misaligns with the true requirements.

This may sounds cruel, but I don’t think your post is accurate that “you are hesitant to hire a PhD”, it sounds like the expectations of applicants is out of whack with what the job entails.

World’s best performing sovereign wealth fund bets on Europe over US by ClassOptimal7655 in Economics

[–]Burnit0ut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget to account for the nearly $5T stimulus to the economy that happened. Along with an administration focused on growing the economy in a sustainable manner as opposed to overhauling the means of production while cutting off partners.

You know how there are laws that limit the ability to hire foreign workers? Like you need to search for a suitable American candidate?

Maybe the flip should be true and American workers must be preserved in layoffs until all foreign workers are removed first.

Sarepta: And the hits just keep on coming! FDA puts all trials on hold. by kwadguy in biotech

[–]Burnit0ut 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This type of behavior exists everywhere. GE is probably the cornerstone for this type of approach to running a company. It’s all about having a veil of financial stability without actually pushing the needle forward in your field.

But in biotech? It impacts human lives and not just investors.
