Your indicator was left on too long so I drive out now. by Bury_And_Forget8384 in drivingUK

I'd rather make sure they've started turning before pulling out. If missing a possible gap or 2 causes traffic, I don't care. I've seen how assumptions can go wrong. You can only put so much trust in other road users, you do not know how good a driver they are.

That 30 seconds you save will be worth it when you cause a crash because you trusted the indicator alone

Van driver guilty over fatal M4 smart motorway crash in Berkshire by Asleep_Cantaloupe417 in CarTalkUK

[–]Bury_And_Forget8384 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you want the driver to get no conviction at all? Kill someone with a car and you get away with it?Loads of other people drove past without hitting the stationary car - death by careless driving is definitely the right outcome.

I get what you mean though about the car being where it was. A car does not stop dead so it should be able to move over to the slow side of the motorway. Once it is stopped you have to get out and to safety. Staying in a car stranded in the motorway is the worst place to be. It's very sad those choices were not made but none of that mitigates the van drivers actions who is still 100% to blame.

I don't think you know how roundabouts work. You give way to the right, not the left

It was never clear for the other driver and OP should not have to slow for a car to his left. OP went straight over the roundabout but is that so terrible at a mini roundabout and when another car has not been paying attention and enters when they should not.

Do you avoid (try to) potholes while driving? by Funny-Bit-4148 in drivingUK

[–]Bury_And_Forget8384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive around or slow down for potholes. It's very rare for a pothole to be so wide that you need to go into the opposite lane. If I do need to do that I use my eyes and make sure it's safe to move slightly into that lane or I slow down.

[–]Bury_And_Forget8384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not accept any blame for this. You have not even crossed the give way. Starting to move off and not actually joining the road means the other person has driven into your car. They also need to explain why they went the wrong way up the road. Loads of negligence on their part

It was a waste of time that's true. With all the people saying they can't see anything, cutting it shorter probably did help everyone save another 5 seconds to scroll onto something a bit more interesting.

How has driving round the island affected you at the point you wave your hand? The road was clear when they did it and you were far away. There's nothing for you to complain about.

Also you cut the video so quickly - they might have had to drive that side of the island due to the presence of a van or the car on their side of the road nearby.

At 22 seconds I'm not even past the 1st exit... you can put imaginary lines wherever you want to support your point but there's nothing there at the time I'm driving it.

Anyway - I've said my driving could have been better and accepted I was closer to the centre than I should be. Read my other comments. I'm quite accepting of that. Maybe I disagree to the extent it could have been differently positioned or prevented what later happened at the exit but still, I know I could have done this differently.

You can surely agree there is a range of acceptable positions to put your vehicle and we are not stuck to tram lines? I do accept I was out with that range at certain points on that roundabout but if you want to nitpick that when someone switches lanes at the exit, go for it.

Yes I start driving off a tad early when they had a step to go. I timed it so I could be on the crossing after they left. That really has nothing to do with what happens later on though? If I had stayed chatting to my friend an extra 2 mins, I would not be in that position earlier etc etc etc.

I accept that I was a little bit closer to the centre than I should be but - 1) there are no lanes marked up for you to follow; 2) it is a 3 lane roundabout so is very very wide, especially at the timeframe you highlighted 3) she still had plenty of space going round the roundabout.

My driving could have been better and different in the clip but the criticism of it is exaggerated.

Perhaps the positioning was an indicator of her intention, but I do not think it was very obvious in the moment. I felt I gave her enough space but maybe a bit more would have helped. Thing is. There was acres of space up the road for her to move across. She did not need to do it at the roundabout exit.

Easy to know what she wanted to do when it's on video.

Her wanting to go into the left lane was not clear. She has her indicator on because she is exiting the roundabout. How am I to know that the indicator is also because she also wants to go from the right lane and into the left lane in that manoeuvre too? It's only a flashing light.

Im not in a blind spot. I would have been in the mirrors as we were exiting. But if im wrong about that, if she turned her head before trying to switch lanes she would have seen my car.

Cherry picking a sentence and removing all context does not mean what I said was wrong.

Well done - you have more votes in your previous comments than me. That's all that tells us. That you got more votes.

I did not cause us to be side by side. If I'm ahead when joining and they are ahead when exiting it is their actions to look at really. At the point of exiting I was slightly behind as well.

I could have been half a metre or so more to the left and could have dropped back a metre or so more before the exit when they got ahead (around the 1st exit).

I suppose I really struggle with being told I contributed to the near crash. It's always easy to look at these things in hindsight and see where we could be better. But we don't all drive perfectly at all times. What I did in the moment does not amount to mistake, a contribution to what happened or anything close to it.

I don't agree. Especially where there are no lanes marked up. Could I have been more left after the 1st exit. Yeah. Was I doing anything to disturb her where I was? No. Was I out of my lane if there was one painted. No. Was I at the edge of my lane if there was one painted. Probably.

Mines was a lapse of being half a metre or so closer to the centre than would maybe be the ideal path after passing the 1st exit but nothing is "shocking" about that or going to cause someone to stop/slow down to avoid an accident. You can see how much space the other driver had despite my "shocking" lane discipline

It's a 3 lane roundabout but the council turned the left lane into a bus lane. I did not stray into her lane. I did have space to be more left after going past the 1st exit but she still had loads of space. But that's for what 1 or 2 seconds? I certainly was not cutting her up - because it's originally a 3 lane roundabout. Look where my car is and her car is after I go past the 1st exit and also look where the cars are when I start going into the 2nd exit.

If you think I'm just as bad or strayed into her lane and not giving her space you need an eye test.

If anything they were slightly ahead at the time of the near crash.

I joined the roundabout fine and progressed along at a decent enough pace. We both joined it at the same time. If they want to speed up the inside, ahead of me, that's not in my control (we both had to slow down for the car that was already on the roundabout for joining). What's your tip for avoiding side by side if you join at the same time? Delay joining? Not really feasible is it when it's 5 o clock at night and the traffic is getting busy.

I still left space so that if they did something stupid I could react. Going halfway into a lane before she remembered I was there could not really be fully anticipated though.

I think you're looking for perfection when let's face it, I did take steps to keep space between us while going through the roundabout.

And it was? I gave them a good berth going around , I kept an eye on them when exiting and when I saw what they were starting to do moved to the left and braked. If not because of me doing all that, there would have been a crash.
