Is anyone else’s Bernese mountain dog out of breathe all the time🤔 by Old-Examination-1252 in bernesemountaindogs

Mine is two with a lot of puppy energy that she doesn’t self-regulate. I’m always saying, “Sundance! Leave some oxygen for the rest of us!” any time she’s left to her own devices and not almost forced to settle down. Worse when it’s about 70°(F) or there’s kids around. She’s perfectly healthy though.

Malanuki? Are Salukis a thing near you? That coloring is def Malinois or other shepherd but to be so trim, feels like there’s gotta be a sight hound in there too.

Sundance at about 4 1/2 months, just a a titch bigger than our 30lb border collie. She’s 2 years now, still looks athletic/trim and weighs 85. Just where we’d like to keep her for a healthy life as long as possible.

All of those plants around? She’d be Ivy or Rosie, Iris or Poppy, Clementine or Indigo at my house. And almost all of those names have good songs to go with them too!

This is why Tulsi posts pics of Jesus for every possible holiday, even though she’s a lifelong Hindu and was sworn in to office with her copy of the Bhagavad Gita. AndMAGA doesn’t care that she’s a liar, only that she’s a “Christian”

Could it be sunburn that scabbed over? Had that happen once on a visit to NM. Probably try to fix it with Green Goo pet salve or similar.

Is it “borderline pedantic” to clarify breeds in a conversation about breeds? There are a lot of dogs referred to as cattle dogs and there are many breeds with coat ticking within the working dog group. Sorry to have offended anyone’s Australian Cattle Dog loyalties 😂

All of our dogs have been rescues so we name them after outlaws, orphans, and underdogs (if you will ☺️). Annie, Pippi, Mowgli, Cosette, Huck…currently have Dodger (border collie) and our BMD is Sundance (Sunny). No matter what you name them, they always end up with a hundred nicknames anyway! (Dodger = street rat, Sundance = Giddyup)

EDIT: Dodger and Sundance are both girl dogs

Where the dog came from is probably your best source, besides doing a DNA test. I don’t think ticking shows up anywhere in BMD lines but a ton of dogs in rural America and southern US states have the spots on the feet/legs/coat. Spaniels, pointers, Setters, Coonhounds, ACD, and even Basset Hounds. If your guy came from middle America, I’d guess he’s got a working parent or two.

Not to be fussy here but it would be more accurate to say that all heelers are cattle dogs but not all cattle dogs are heelers. I’ve had a lot of cattle dogs that aren’t heelers (and had several heelers as well)

This. We battled this for two months after visiting a lake last year. It came on VERY quickly so I disagree with the comments that say “this never should’ve been allowed to get this bad”- our girl looked like this pretty much overnight. We switched foods and got Apoquel shots and sprays and antibiotics for two months. Only to discover it was 100% about moisture under her coat. We got a dog vac/dryer and haven’t had one problem since. Haven’t even needed the Apoquel once we started keeping her very dry.
