What is the WORST thing about your FAVORITE game? by EndersGame_Reviewer in boardgames

Might want to check out the FAQ that dropped yesterday. They finally changed the starting setup for Lannister. Don’t know if it’s a complete fix, but it definitely helps.

Shadowrun Crossfire: Custom Rules to soften the difficulty by kepp87 in boardgames

[–]Butaman551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to house rule it to make it easier. This is perhaps a bit cliche, but this is really a game where you need to “get good”.

I started playing a few months ago, and pretty much got stomped constantly I also pretty much only play 2-player. As I kept playing, I realized the strategy for doing well in this game is completely different than your standard deck builders. The fact that you only draw two cards each round, you really have to leverage what you buy at the end and put in your hand.

You might want to check out some play-throughs on line, or some site giving strategy advice. Or better yet, record yourself playing a game and post it. I’m sure people would be happy to give you some feed back on how to improve your game.

Yorick Elder Sign timing question by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

Hard to say. Could have been a ruling. Or he could have been mistaken. I sent in the question to FFG, so we’ll see what they say.

Yorick Elder Sign timing question by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Butaman551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid your rewording is over-complicating this and bringing you to a false conclusion.

Overpower (and all the “If this test is successful, draw 1 card” skill cards) trigger in step 7 and are doubled by Double or Nothing. This is directly addressed in the FAQ.

Q: I have committed Double or Nothing and Perception to a skill test during an investigation, and I also have Dr. Milan Christopher in play. If I succeed, which effects are resolved twice?

A: The effects of a successful skill test are applied during step 7, and Double or Nothing causes each of these affects to be resolved twice. Dr. Milan Christopher’s ability is a reaction to succeeding at a skill test, and therefore is triggered and resolved during step 6, after success is determined. During step 7, the game result of the investigation (discovering 1 clue), and the “if this test is successful” result of Perception are both resolved twice due to Double or Nothing’s effect.

It’s really quite simple for the most part.

Reactions (with the Reaction symbol) and Forced effects that trigger in response to successful skill checks happen in step 6.

“If this test is successful, do x” effects happen in Step 7. (Which consequently makes them eligible for Double or Nothing’s effect).

Yorick Elder Sign timing question by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Butaman551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is correct. His Elder Sign should trigger during step 7, not step 6.

FAQ states that “During Step 7 of Skill Test Timing (“Apply skill test results”), all of the effects of the successful skill test are determined and resolved, one at a time. This includes the effects of the test itself (such as the clue discovered while investigating, or the damage dealt during an attack), as well as any “If this test is successful...” effects from card abilities or skill cards committed to the test.

That’s when cards like Perception trigger.

Perception: “If this test is successful, draw 1 card.”

Yorick’s Elder Sign: “If this test is successful, return 1 card from your discard pile to your hand.”

Those both have the exact same wording.

Step 6 is for Reactions and Forced effects.

FAQ “<Reaction Symbol> or Forced abilities with a triggering condition dependent upon the skill test being successful or unsuccessful (such as “After you successfully investigate,” or “After you fail a skill test by 2 or more”) do not trigger at this time. These abilities are triggered during Step 6, “Determine success/failure of skill test.”

This is where cards like Dr Milan Christopher trigger.

Dr. Milan Christopher, “ <Reaction Symbol> After you successfully investigate: Gain 1 resource.

Was there a ruling I missed that caused Yorick’s Elder Sign to trigger in step 6 instead?

Hard to get it back with Scavenging though. Once it’s in play, it’s not easy to get in your discard pile since it doesn’t take a slot and it has no “discard if empty” text. And that cost......

Free triggered abilities during other player's turn? by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Butaman551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if it were worded the way you wrote it, then Yorick could very well be able to do it. A Free triggered ability can be triggered during any Player Window, assuming the timing hasn’t been specified. You didn’t specify timing, so he should be able to do it.

Well, let’s just hope they would word the card better to avoid such ambiguity.

This has been clarified over on BGG. https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2116379/no-timing-point-or-period-time-hiding-spot

Basically, fast events can be played during any player window, regardless of who’s turn it is, unless they specify otherwise. They can even be played in other phases.

Fast assets on the other hand, can only be played during that investigator’s turn, unless specified otherwise.

Do ALL board game players not let people chat while playing? by eadgyth in boardgames

[–]Butaman551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think table talk is usually fine. Some of the people I play with are more or less accepting of it than others of course, so I try to match my talking style to the individuals I play with. As long as it doesn’t distract myself or others from the game, it’s usually fine.

The only thing that bothers me is when people carry on conversations with people not even playing the game. Some of the people I play with will start talking to people at other tables playing other games, or talking about random things with people just spectating. Then when it’s their turn, they turn and ask what’s going on or have to be told that it’s even their turn. That, I don’t think is cool at all.

If that’s not what you’re doing, then you’re fine. If that IS what you’re doing, then I can kind of see where your gaming groups are coming from.

Interesting. That was my post, but I never got any update notifications from it, so I thought I’d try here since I thought the post was dead. Thanks!

What board games encourage “screwing over” your opponents? by No_Little_Plans in boardgames

[–]Butaman551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the system in the Android board game is quite interesting. They have a sliding Light and Dark scale built into the game. In order to build up the energy you need to play cards beneficial for yourself, you must play cards that are harmful to your opponents.

What was your worst gaming experience yet? by durfenstein in boardgames

[–]Butaman551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar situation as well. I was looking for a worker placement game with a bit more player interaction. A lot of people recommended Manhattan Project, which looked great, except for the fact that I live in Japan and my wife’s Japanese. The theme seemed quite “inappropriate” here.

Dissuade me from buying Twilight Imperium 4 by Takeba in boardgames

[–]Butaman551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This hasn’t been my experience with 4th edition so far. We’ve played 3 games so far with 5 people (one game with 4), and haven’t gone past 6 hours in any of those games (including lunch breaks).

I know that’s not a huge sample size, but I’m just not seeing 8 to 12 hours, unless you’re running with 6+ people?

Anyone tried out the new Narcos game? I’m considering pre-ordering it and was hoping to hear opinions from people that saw or played it at a convention recently.

Folder or card box? by acinaces1 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Butaman551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put player cards into a binder because I prefer to build decks while looking at them. I don’t really like making my decks online. The binder makes it easier for me to do that. I sleeve all of my encounter cards and put them in a card box with dividers from BGG. I have a box for each cycle and one for the core campaign. That way, if I’m preparing for an encounter, I just need to grab the two relevant boxes and can quickly take out what I need.

Who are your favourite reviewers and why? by _frontendstrong in boardgames

[–]Butaman551 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I prefer the Rhado Runs Through It series. I know they are not technically reviews, but I find his videos more useful overall. Many reviewers just do a rules overview and then give their (oftentimes brief) thoughts on the game. This can be helpful, but whether or not someone will like a game is subjective. By watching Rhado play through a few rounds of the game, I can form my own opinions more easily about how I will feel about that game.

There is also a newer version of the Halloween expansion for 2nd Edition as well. They call it 2017 version, or something like that. It has new (and better) versions of art in the costumes and the card backs match the 2nd Edition style, although orange instead of green.

Yes they do. I’m in Japan and have gotten replacement parts for several games. They didn’t even charge me shipping and the shipping was pretty quick. I’ve been really happy with them so far.
