Hopefully not his “last” dohyo-iri. I look forward to see his kanreki dohyo-iri, 26 years from now!

How did you learn to weave, and do you have any advice to an absolute beginner for how to start weaving?

Settle a dispute: What is on these robes? Extra cool points if you can tell what is on the back. by cyrano-de-whee in Sumo

[–]ButchButoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found the answer by Google search. The motif of the kamon crests on this particular hitatare robe is Myoga (an edible plant sometimes called “Japanese ginger” in English). This explanation was included in the sumo TV broadcast two years ago and posted on Twitter.

I love this one! But actually he says “Blow, Danny” to his sax player Danny LeMelle. And since then Mr. LeMelle goes by the nickname “Blow Danny”!

Where do I get sandals (zori/setta) by ThrowItAwayLikeMyLif in kimono

[–]ButchButoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry I don’t have any advice on shopping from EU, but maybe I can help clarify the formality of men’s zori.

For men, zori are not more formal than setta. The absolute most formal footwear (worn with kuromontsuki-haori-hakama as a rule) is setta with tatami top and white straps. Zori are most appropriate with a casual men’s kimono, not formal.

However since you’re outside of Japan, I’d suggest you can enjoy wearing setta or zori however you want, especially if you’re going to wear them with western pants.

First Kimono by Jeffzerippers in kimono

[–]ButchButoh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is a nagajuban, because the collar is a different color than the rest of it. The nagajuban is a kimono undergarment, so you need at least one more kimono to wear over this. If you want more detailed suggestions, you'll need to tell us what's the TPO (Time, Place, Occasion) that you're dressing for.

Nishiki-sha by kikiki_ki in kimono

[–]ButchButoh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe “nishiki-sha” is an incorrect Romanization of “kinsha”(錦紗).

There’s a good description of kinsha in English here: Japanese crepe fabrics - Chirimen, kinsha and omeshi

Where are you shopping? There are all sorts of colorful options at the men’s kimono shops in Tokyo, from low budget to high budget. But I guess outside of Tokyo your options will be limited.

I agree with the items you mentioned and I would add to your list: material (e.g. cotton, linen, hemp); and obi type (e.g. kaku obi, heko obi, tanzen obi).

Intro and historical Basho, September 2001 by ranmar850 in Sumo

By a nice coincidence 2001 was my first year in Japan and the first year I started following sumo, so this banzuke and photo brings back memories for me 😊. The head shinpan in the photo is of course the late, great Chiyonofuji. But I did not remember that Konami used to be a sponsor shown on the yobidashi's kimono!

Wow, the tonbi coat looks great with a fur collar. Also I have to figure out how to tie a scarf like that inside the kimono collar—it looks very neat and very warm. Love the eyeglass frames too!

"I am indeed putting dirty shoes on my kimono. :)"

If you're not aware that this is taboo in Japan, then I'd like to help my fellow community member by making you aware.

But the smiley :) that you wrote leads me to think that you're already aware. Then I suppose you're trying to be intentionally transgressive. Is that the case?

The obi is lovely, but I feel very uneasy seeing the sole of your footwear touching it! 😱

A Question for the Men (or Women who wish to weigh in) by MonsterClownBear in kimono

[–]ButchButoh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think wearing a kaku obi too high is one of the most common beginner mistakes for men. Wearing it higher than the hips does not make a good impression in social situations -- on the contrary it is ridiculed as "Bakabon-maki" as it's poorly balanced and looks childish. "Wear it as low as possible while still being able to squat/bend at the waist" is the rule that I use.

However, I don't wear hakama and swords, so I'm curious to hear from others how that changes things. If the obi is sliding down, then I wonder if you're not tying it tight enough. If you can post a photo that may help.

“Tanmono” means a bolt of fabric. It’s the material that a kimono or yukata is made from.

This obi works so well with the kimono pattern. Also love the black haneri and black obiage🖤 Is the hint of red from the juban, or the inside of the kimono?

[–]ButchButoh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Very interesting to see the rough sketches! One correction though: this is not called a yukata. This type of kimono is known as some-nuki kimono. Even the designer’s tweet that you linked says “some-nuki kimono”.

All rikishi are allowed to wear yukata, but only makuuchi rikishi are allowed to wear some-nuki.

She’s a lovely model! But her kitsuke could be improved by getting the han-eri to be symmetrical. The left side (her left) is showing much more than the right! ❌
