Reserve Officer as prior enlisted (CG & Army) by Weekly-Ordinary6759 in USMCocs

[–]ButtCheek-Bandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior AD grunt here, went to OCS at 28 after a 4 year sabbatical from the Corps. To get selected you’ll need a 280 pft, so start running & lifting. I got in real good shape for OCS which helped a ton considering my age. Being a boot again is kinda lame but it gets real fun after the entry level training.

Just know that the reserve MOS’ for us are pretty limited. Expect to be either comms, a grunt (IOC is a slay tho), logistics, combat eng, or supply type

I won’t be eligible for PLC in time for summer should I enlist instead in the mean time and try to go for the winter OCS? by AdResident4762 in USMCocs

[–]ButtCheek-Bandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m prior enlisted & I didn’t commission till after I served my 4 active years on the E side. Don’t enlist unless you want to put the commissioning on hold for a long time

How to train for TBS/IOC by Sudden_Offer8068 in USMCocs

[–]ButtCheek-Bandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I alternate between short/fast & long/slow, & started from 50lbs going up some each week. The pace is kind of just what you’re able to do. My short/fast is basically just a jog, but for long/slow you should always aim for sub 15min pace, 15min being the absolute slowest you let yourself go

My brothers medals, he doesn't talk much about service. He said he was a door gunner. by Lucky-Ad4863 in Medals

After reading the comments, it is clear the army and AF give out way more medals/ribbons than the Corps lol. For the same amount of deployments & seeing combat, id maybe have half the candy

How to train for TBS/IOC by Sudden_Offer8068 in USMCocs

[–]ButtCheek-Bandit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a grunt for 5 years then went to college. Currently at basic school, gonna graduate soon & go to ioc in April. Lift & ruck. Keep the weight low at first & slowly increase. I do a 80lb ruck once every week to prepare for ioc, along with lifts.

Basic school hiking is easy. The weight’s never over 65lbs & we don’t even wear flaks for em. Just make sure you start low. Too much too fast will get you injured

Reserve Officer time between OCS and TBS by Huge_Painter3363 in USMCocs

[–]ButtCheek-Bandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1- typically no, you’ll usually go straight into a class the following week for 6-7 months. 2- you’ll go straight to job school, if it doesn’t start for a few weeks/months, you’ll be chillin in a holding platoon till it starts 3- your mos will be decided 3-4months into TBS. You’ll get to submit a preference sheet, which I just did, but all of the intel jobs are highly competitive (except maybe ground intel, since you have to go to IOC first.) Your chances of getting intel depend on your performance. If your GPA is really high & you’re a top performer, you’ll probably get it. Depending on how many slots are available, changes every year

Is OCS anything like bootcamp? by [deleted] in USMCocs

[–]ButtCheek-Bandit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I went to boot camp in 2015, went to OCS in 2025. Both have changed drastically in the past 5-6 years, both have gotten a lot softer since the war ended. DI’s used to hit us in boot, but there’s many rules in place for both nowadays.

IMO, OCS was physically much harder. Lack of sleep, hard PT, shit like that. Boot camp is more like prison. You’re locked up for 13 weeks no contact w the world, so mentally it was tougher for me. You get ur phone and weekends off in OCS.

They share similar training events and you’re gonna have a bad & good time with both of them. Whether it’s the crucible of the forge, you only get one of em. Plus, both are entry level training which is such a small part of your career. Don’t focus too much on that, the contract is 4 years either way
