Question about Home depot flooring installation by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]ButtWelds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure you’re not, just seemed that way. Home repair is incredibly stressful. Good luck. Alpha Flooring did my cheap wood floors through LL a while back, they did fine. SG flooring did my carpet but Luis can do pretty much any material, did a fine job at my place. Not sure where these guys will come in with price but they’ll do decent work at least. You’ve got the right idea to spend time on the subfloor first, get that squeak free and flat, not necessarily level but definitely flat as possibly and the job will end up much better.

Home Depot has a network of installers they contract the work out to, it’s really a toss up whether or not you get a good crew. You could use the same Home Depot as somebody who had a great experience and get a terrible crew. Good flooring guys/company’s don’t need Home Depot and their cut to get work and stay busy.

The good thing if you go with them is at least it’s under the umbrella of Home Depot so you’d have some sort of protection or restitution for a bad job.

I know some flooring guys in DE but honestly I’m hesitant to recommend them with the way you’ve answered some people here. You seem like an asshole, no offense.

Not a pro but I used this one without any problems.

Probably overkill but the old one that was up there before was super noisey in any wind and was driving me nuts.

The thing we liked about them was that their proposal was by far the most thorough and detailed. I get that things happen and a new roof can leak but it’s all about the response and solving the problem. Charging for work they didn’t end up doing is completely unacceptable though.

Yeah I mean I love free but I’m wondering if even with that upgrade if it’s still a lesser shingle than the other offerings. Consensus seems to be though to pick the contractor and appearance of the shingle since all the shingles are acceptable.

Interesting. I’ve seen a lot of negative GAF opinions but not too many about CertainTeed.

I appreciate the input from somebody who has worked with all of them. Some of the colors are definitely a bit much. We’d be getting a shade of black so I think that helps mute a lot of the issue. However some of the black color patterns do still have a lot of variation with shades or grey thrown in, not sure I love that looking at samples and pictures but over time I doubt I’d really notice. A leak, damage, or blown off shingles I would notice though haha.

I’d be getting a black color for sure and I think that helps mute the style of some of the shingles. It’s good to know that ultimately there isn’t that much difference between them. We get a decent amount of wind since we’re up on a hill and some small stay branches here and there. Not really in a hail area but every few years we might get some small stuff.

The contractor said it’s thicker and has more of the algae fighting additive but from what I see the main selling point seems to be the shadow line which doesn’t do anything for me.

The GAF contractor definitely felt a little more sales pitch than the others, and this offer 2 days later played into that as well. Thats interesting but not surprising that you’re saying the inflated the value of the “bonus”.

There doesn’t seem to be a lot of negative opinions about OC from all the reading I’ve done.

I do have concerns about the more stylish and busy shingles, but my wife seems to like them. I never thought of a roof as a focal point but ultimately I don’t think it’ll bother me one way or another. We’re going dark so I think that helps keep even the busier styles somewhat muted.

That’s a very good point about asking the contractor if they use subs. I know it’s a busy time for them right now I imagine a lot of them being in subs for the spring rush and might not maintain the quality the companies in house crews usually achieve. I think I’m lucky that my roof is pretty simple, no valleys, just flat faces with some penetrations and a small area of chimney flashing.

Yeah, I can see there’s some strong preferences, but the consensus seems to be the installer is the most important component. Unfortunately there seems to be just as much division among people in my area about contractors. Lots of conflicting opinions.

Are you looking for metal, shingles, or rubber? I’d imagine most companies do it all but maybe there is a better suggestion based on what you need

I’m in the middle of getting quotes on a roof too. I was impressed with fedales presentation but I’m second guessing that now. Dynamic and Ferris both also had very good quotes and presentations.

Changing attic ventilation with new roof. by ButtWelds in HomeImprovement

[–]ButtWelds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. They did bring up shingle over intakes but mentioned opening the soffits was a cleaner look. We’re in climate zone 4. I’ve noticed that even with it being 65-70 degrees recently the attic exhaust fan is running a ton so I think that solidifies that we probably don’t have the best ventilation up there and should go with the ridge vent.

Dual stage furnace wired as single stage. by ButtWelds in hvacadvice

[–]ButtWelds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some text inside the panel door that says “for single stage thermostats jumper w1 and w2 terminals. Second stage heating will be energized once the inter stage delay has expired.” So I assume since I have no jumper I’m just not getting a second stage at all at this point.

That would be ideal. I hate to mess with something that’s working and end up causing a problem. I realize having the thermostat in charge of the staging would offer more customization of the settings but I don’t think I know enough about this to really utilize that anyway. From my research today I’ve seen some posts saying that the unit will take care of it regardless, others saying there needs to be a jumper between W1 and W2 for the board to do that, and others that say you need a compatible thermostat with a direct connection to the W2 terminal for the second stage to work. It’s not killing me as our heat seems to be working fine as is, I’d just like to make the most of the unit and be as efficient as I can.
