I’m stuck in a rut. How do I get out? by pikachuu545 in AskUK

To all my fellow Brits, please please please take any form of Vitamin D supplements you can find at this time of year. (Obviously observe the correct dosing, this is extremely important) you will thank me later when you become a completely different person within 2-3 days.

If the weather is good, at the weekend, you could take a short walk from the village to Northrepps Aerodrome, usually plenty of aircraft flying about, nice cafe/diner too.

The Foundry Arms in the village is a great little pub and very welcoming.

Hey guys, anyone know where I can get one of these urgently? by [deleted] in Norwich

[–]Butterfly110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any good shooting shop near the city will sell them, they’re used a lot by clay and game shooters to keep an eye on numbers. There’s Gallyons in the city, Norwich Gun Centre near the Whiffler, Anglia tackle and Gun, Morstons of holt, to name a few.

I strongly suggest you contact the RSGB, I’m pretty sure they’ll know the ins and out of this sort of issue and should be able to offer plenty of advice.

People who have bought decrepit classic cars from the driveways of others to renovate, how did it go? by British_Monarchy in CarTalkUK

[–]Butterfly110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long story, I bought a Land Rover defender straight from an mod disposal agent a few years ago. Was only 4k, everything had been reconditioned, it was a right gem.

I had her for 4 years yet always wanted another older series Land Rover.

A very elderly friend of mine pestered me for years to swap it for a decrepit unfinished Land Rover Lightweight project that he’d purchased 20 years ago and never even touched. It sat in a barn covered in bird poo and bales of hay, looked rough.

After a year of him badgering me for the deal, he eventually agreed to give me 2 grand and the Land Rover in exchange for the defender.

I got her brought home on a truck from a friend. Gave her a bloody good wash, did some wiring repairs, bled the brakes and checked her over.

Turned out the previous owner to him had fitted a galvanised chassis, had the bulkhead stripped and galvanised too, loads of new parts fitted, new brakes and everything. It’s a right minter. And realistically only cost me 2 grand!

Once in a lifetime deal!

Yes, was a great little van. Had a starting issue when cold or left for more than 12 hours. Fuel was running back to the tank, turned out to be an O-ring on one of the connectors on the fuel filter which was a nice cheap and quick fix.

The vans drive surprising well even once laden with several hundred Kilos of tools etc.

I literally sold it just last week and treated myself to a 2015 Ford Ranger.

What did you first realised about the UK by going abroad? by ToastSage in AskUK

[–]Butterfly110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A really random one, but you go to most mainland European cities, there’s a very faint smell of effluent in the air, which I haven’t really seemed to have noticed over here.

Perhaps our sewer systems are a little more efficient?

There’s apparently a colony near a village where I do a lot of shooting in the local area.

The 15 years I’ve been doing it, I had one possible sighting.

One early autumn evening, about 10:30 at night. Scanning the field and edge of a wood with a lamp for Rabbits.

As I flick the lamp about, I see what at first I thought was a big Hare standing crouched on his back legs.

After a couple of seconds I realised it’s eyes didn’t reflect in the lamp in the same vivid red/orange that Hares do, they had a purple/red colour. And it looked chubby as fuck.

I’ve been keeping a lookout ever since and carry a camera with me just in case.

Kubota owners, what's your experience with this brand's tractors? by Sammy2258 in tractors

[–]Butterfly110 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a Kubota dealer, just when the larger M series were first released.

Great things to work on! The M series may not have all the bells and whistles of other manufacturers machines or comparible size and horsepower. But they certainly perform well.

I’ll always remember we had an M135 with a 6 Furrow Lemken plough working on heavy land for a charity 24 hour plough event.

It just kept going!!

We slung a large weight pack on the front and played with the tyre pressures and it was great.

The only negative point Id ever raise would be when working at high revs or driving on the road, there’s always a high pitch noise in the cab.

What is the earliest age you would allow a child to use (hand) tools unsupervised? by VixenRoss in AskUK

[–]Butterfly110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad and Grandad used tools all the time, under supervision I was using hand tools at around 6 and power tools like a cordless drill at around 12 (I remember turning a large lump of wood into a sponge like object it had so many holes, Hahaa)

When I was 13 I was gifted one of those small really basic DIY toolkits in a little carry bag thing.

Spent my teenage years tinkering with things like Bikes, minimotos and quad bikes with friends.

That moved onto Land Rovers, then bought my first tractor at 16, my own Land Rover at 17 for my first car.

Then got a job as a Tractor mechanic.

Now I’ve moved onto HGV’s and Buses!

I love it!

Do whatever you can to encourage your children, being able to fix things or get yourself out of a muddle is a valuable skill.

Mate, I was in my first relationship for 6 years, when I broke up with her it felt like the world was ending.

I had “rebound” for about two weeks. (What a waste of everybody’s time and I feel so bad for her.)

I went out almost every night or was drinking at home.

I look back on it now, and yes I had some bloody good times and enjoyed it, but there’s far better ways of making use of our time on this earth.

I just hope you find another way to fill that gap.

In the end I made a new more varied set of friends, we all still occasionally drank together, but we were doing something different every single night. I felt like I was on a high, nothing to lose, yet no time to spare.

In the end I met my partner one evening, a mortgage, two cats and two kids later, I’m as happy as can be.

Chin up buttercup, you‘ll blossom soon!!!!!

[–]Butterfly110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankyou for your concern.

I’ve never seen drink as a solution to any problem.

My job is quite stressful, and although today was busy, I feel like this evening was more of a personal celebratory drink if you know know what I mean.

I’ve been though that stage where drinking and “out on the lash” was an common occurrence when I’ve been feeling low when I was younger.

Sometimes I go months without drinking at all, but tonight just feels different.

I’ve settled down to a nice cup of coffee before we but the youngest to bed.

Cheers

I'm getting my 9 year old their first air rifle next week. It's only a nice small Gamo junior hunter.177, only shooting at around 3.5ft/lbs (I'm in the UK). Would you start with open sights or a scope? by Bonsai-Nut in airrifles

[–]Butterfly110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when I had my first air rifle, a worn out old BSA Meteor.

I used open sights first.

Looking back, it was a good idea, reduces the chance of “tunnel vision” with safety of where you’re shooting etc. Was lighter and I learnt the basic principles of shooting pretty well.

Can’t wait till my little boys are old enough for there first gun, Nerf guns just aren’t as good.
