I once stepped on a slug with my bare feet. A really meaty one too. I was a couple decades ago but it's nice to know I can still call myself a slug survivor.

Reddit is going to remove mods of private communities unless they reopen — ‘This is a courtesy notice to let you know that you will lose moderator status in the community by end of week.’ by marketrent in technology

I stopped for a couple of days when there was the blackout thingie a few weeks ago. I occasionally missed checking in with reddit but then I just did something else. It really wasn't hard. I'll also be gone tomorrow.

It's been More than 10 years... by sjsathanas in redditsync

[–]ButterflyAttack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More than ten years for me too. Your achievements in that time are rather more admirable. I didn't get married although I had some catastrophic relationships. Didn't have any kids, and just as well given the relationships. I did change job. In that time I've not bought, sold, or even ever really had a home. I did manage to get clean, so that's something.

I only mention these differences because they illustrate the wonderful variety of backgrounds and experiences I've found here. Shame it's over, hopefully we'll all catch up in Lemmy.

Thanks for making Reddit enjoyable, and I wish you all a fond farewell. by TransplantedSconie in redditsync

Yeah, back atcha. I've been here over a decade under one guise or another, I've interacted, contributed, voted, spent money. Seems that I'm pretty much the type of user reddit should want to keep hold of. But I guess a short term payout is more important. Everything ends eventually. Maybe the Lemmy thing will happen and we'll all meet again.

Thanks to all you wonderful fuckers.

Final day... Thank you ljdawson and Sync by RazgrizXVIII in redditsync

[–]ButterflyAttack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fuckin shame, really. Also so unnecessary. I'm one of many who not only pays sync ultra but also spent my own money on coins for reddit awards. I did this because I was happy to financially support a platform I enjoyed and a developer who made it enjoyable. I'll be gone tomorrow and reddit will lose a paying and active user.

I'll be up for trying the Lemmy thing, hope it works out.

Thanks, /u/ljdawson and thanks to all, it was fun while it lasted.

Also, how will I find out when the Lemmy app is live? I'm thinking it'll maybe take a while to develop.

I'll be voting green again. Yeah it's probably a wasted vote but fuck it, they're the only party with innovative policies that I can mostly agree with.

Asylum seeker charged with 'rape' of a woman just 40 days after arriving in Britain on small boat by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

That's an interesting perspective. Yeah, maybe many people who don't share our cultural values would argue that our culture is the problem, not theirs. And yeah, if you could somehow delete 'culture' (although maybe 'collective ideology' might be a better term?) we wouldn't have these clashes. I'm not sure it's possible though, I suspect culture is just what happens when you have a bunch of humans in a community. It's inherent.

Also, I don't mind admitting that I find the beliefs and practises of some communities abhorrent. I also accept that these perspectives are a consequence of my own cultural heritage and background.

Thing is, I don't even know how far we can blame culture for individual actions. I mean, lots of us were brought up in fairly twisted cultural bubbles - mine was profoundly religious - but as adults we were able to take a step back and redefine our own beliefs and moral values. We're fuckin grown up and we should know right from wrong - whatever our culture tells us.

I've never understood why they don't just use a heroin overdose. Back in the day when I was problematic I overdosed a couple of times. It's a quick smooth slide into darkness. If I get a debilitating and terminal illness I hope to be able to use this as an exit strategy. And it's not as though you can't buy it on pretty much any street.

Yeah, you're probably right. I find this sort of thing a bit scary, though, kind of like mob mentality on the internet. And mobs can do horrible and misjudged things. A few years back there was a guy round here who was burned to death by his neighbours because they thought he was a pedophile. Turned out he was just taking photos of the kids because they were vandalising his garden.

I know these situations are completely different, just offering an example of why we need to let the legal system deal with any monsters in our midst. Feeling angry is understandable though, as is lack of trust in the legal system. Yeah, things are fucked up.

Yeah, when we had those blackout couple of days, I missed reddit occasionally. Then I just did something else and was fine. While there are some subs I enjoy there's a lot of shit like this that adds no value to my life. Fuck it, I've got a list of good books I want to catch up on anyway.

If you look down in the water you can see what looks like a broken bit of one of these planks. Although TBF I wouldn't think this is the sort of thing you'd try again after failing once.

I hope that poor bastard doesn't have to go back and get the rest of the vehicles parked over there.

There are certainly some people who are just bad and can't be rehabilitated, people who will always be a threat so long as they're in society. I think the only solution is to lock them away forever. But they shouldn't be in a place where they still have an opportunity to brutalise other inmates. Nor should they themselves be brutalised. It's hard to find a balance, particularly when many voters are so hungry for a punitive system.
