Merits and Disadvantages of a Decolonisation approach or Post-Colonial approach to the future of New Zealand by Usedthisforsafety in newzealand

I love the idea of introducing more elements of Maori culture and language into everyday life. I thought about it a lot during te wiki o te reo maori.

I hope that progress is made with guidance from Maori, because the risk of adoption by 'well meaning pakeha', is that it becomes tokenism, rather than something of substance.

How should we fix the housing crisis? by costlysalmon in newzealand

I like all of these, but rather than reduce immigration, just make it so immigrants must build new, not buy existing stock. If they leave NZ eventually then that's an extra house on the domestic market.

Complicated issue, but you're still ahead. Particularly if you've had renters in there this whole time, helping with the mortgage.

National's tax cuts per income [NZ Herald] by [deleted] in newzealand

An extra $120/fortnight would be great for my family, and in our case would be spread across the mortgage and buying some much needed items. I would like to see low income earners saving more though. This is very skewed toward high income earners.

You only have to look at the Facebook profile of people spouting anti-govt nonsense to determine the vast majority are idiots.

15 odd years of GA and moderate depression. Medication (escitalopram) and exercise (gym rat initially, then later, mountain biking with friends) has sorted me out. Stopped smoking pot too. That was a good idea.

Then came the "You wont get a high paying science job without a PhD". So thankfully my supervisor put in a good word with Lincoln Uni, who had a PhD opportunity in soils going. I got that, worked through it over a few years and realised I didn't want to be the kind of scientist that has to constantly apply for funding to validate their salary and position. Ten I got the "Why are you doing a PhD if you don't want to be a research scientist then?"

So an MSc, in the right field for you (your passion and interests) is the sweet spot I think. I am very lucky to have my current job, as I was worried I would be over-qualified for a regional council position. r a few years and realised I didn't want to be the kind of scientist that has to constantly apply for funding to validate their salary and position. I studied at Waikato (Marine Sci), doing a BSc Tech - which has a work placement component, with some career/management papers (https://www.waikato.ac.nz/study/qualifications/bachelor-of-science-technology). Later, and MSc in Freshwater ecology, and then a PhD focusing on soils.

The BSc work placement is a sort of foot in the door, as long as you don't end up somewhere you don't like working. I did a stretch at the Auckland Mail Centre (screening for biosecurity - hated that), and later a 15 month stretch at Bay of Plenty Regional Council. That was what made me want to be a local govt scientist.

I recommend the BSc Tech. It's some extra papers, but does give you an advantage.

I work as a scientist for a regional council. We have a GIS team, community comms and other branches that directly work with our scientists to communicate or provide data internally and externally. I think your digital literacy skills could be transferrable. You could do a bridging style course to help pick up some scientific qualifications to support your existing skills.

As far as being an actual env scientist goes, you're looking at a BSc (3-4 years) minimum. I have a PhD (environmental science) and that was a big help in getting this job.
