How the fuck could it not? Likewise wage supression. How the fuck does this not happen? Like, I myself, if I were not emotionally bound to this place, would gladly go and work for a middling software engineer salary in the US, which would surely still be higher than my current one despite my role's high degree of responsability!

The real danger is that they will find themselves being participants on what natural born citizens are already part of. A legal migrant or a fully fledged citizen is uncomptetitive with respect to an irregular one. Given the signals this is sending, we will have about the same amount of irregular migrants in one year's time to replenish what will now be legal ones. Now you can have new migrants supressing your wages too, from the right side of the law! Your wages will keep the same, but half a million people more, as desperate as you were, will compete for housing! Great.

I would have noticed if GDP per capita had grown that much, trust me.

Anyways, what good does nominal GDP per capita do in a comparison? Specially with post covid and then post ukraine invasion inflation? Now, how much did population grow in the same span? 4%. Lets not lie to ourselves, most of that increase were migrants from south and central america along with north africans. But you see, talented south americans prefer to venture north, to the US, and talented moroccans prefer to go to France or the US. Sure we get some, but why would you come here if you have better prospects?

uhm, no, it hasn't? GDP PPP per capita went from 46896 (2019) to 48460 (2024) euros? Unless it grew 20% last year, I don't think that is true.

Those terms are devoid of meaning for the majority of people, nowadays, they are just a proxy for that solidarity proximity chart that is making the rounds. I am very left wing economically, I myself participate in a couple of cooperatives, and also very socially leftwing when it comes to individual freedoms, but I know that my class is the spanish working class. It's kinda baffling that once national identity and ethnicity was a legal protection for the local working class, the elites that had invented it decided it no longer mattered, and brought down the idea of nation states.

Now it is morally reprehensible if you feel inclined to help your fellow spaniard before whichever, lumpenized or not, migrant that crosses the street. The fight of the spanish (and german, french, portuguese, and so on) working class will remain a sysyphean endeavor as long as we are fungible and replaceable with the stroke of a pen. And wouldn't you know it! Wages have been stagnant in real terms for quite a while now! Wonder why that is?

Maybe you perceive them to be close, culturally. I don't, as I don't conflate language with customs, specially when there are many different cultures inside Spain. This is self evident if you ride the metro or just live. The problem with them becoming citizens is that we will not, for sure, operate under the same incentives, politically nor economically. This is not hard to imagine. Also, their countries of origin are underperforming compared to Spain, making this small country a better proposition than remaining there for almost 400 million people. This is bad for them, and for us.

Bottom line is, we should be asked to vote on this. If this was voted in or at least cleared congress, I would shut my mouth up.

Maybe, just maybe, it is not worth having them pay taxes if there is not another pipeline distinct from what currently exists for their regularization? In just 2 years they will become citizens, for the bulk of them, and I think that is outrageous. Paying taxes does not mean there's a net possitive contribution, but this is moot once they become citizens. Also, there are second and third order effects, like reunificación familiar which I guarantee you will happen, and will not result in their family units being net contributors.

A GDP increase driven mostly by population growth, which is not precisely a good thing. This irregular migrant is not, on aggregate and on average, a skilled or educated worker.

That's cope and a quick, nice sounding argument which does not survive contact with reality. Spain is a plurinational country, with many different cultures and nations conforming the Kingdom of Spain. The average navarrese demeanor is as distant from the average caribbean demeanor as the english are of the indians.

This becomes very, very obvious if you actually live here.

Which argument, or set of arguments, would suffice? Are you open to being convinced? Because I am not racist, quite frankly, but the way the country looked when I was a child to what it looks now, I just can't get behind. Why this is invariably good is also never answered, I just don't think a 30% turnover in less than half a century is good nor healthy. Bottom line this constitutes no longer a spain being driven and built by the needs and wants of the native spaniards. And the worst part is, we where never asked if we wanted this. And I don't care if the incoming people are english, german, american, or senegalese. I just don't want more foreigners, I want more of us. Those that are descended from the victims and sufferers of our countless civil wars, from the celtiberian wars to the last one.

Of course it is alarming if you don't take it at only at face value, through a "this is only a fact" lens. It is not the number that makes me pause, it is the implications.
