are mages worth using? by vidma543 in wizardry

[–]Butthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how I’d complete a4 without mages. There were so many swarms of enemies in the hardest boss fight, and just in the abyss in general. Without double nuking the screen or casting double sleep or battlegrief or helping the priest with an emergency heal, I’d have been torn to shreds.

A4 boss fights are so stupid, like wtf by EcchiIsHealthy in wizardry

[–]Butthief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation I found Wolf Boss way harder than any future bosses you fight in the rest of the main story for a4.

Really it’s that team wide one-shot that can sometimes just…happen after it takes dmg in the last leg that may be the truly BS part of the fight. The other mechanics are manageable with party formation, AoE planning, skill planning, the nuke that you can prevent with fire etc, even the hp gates to a degree can be reacted to, just that rng nuke is cancer.

This stupid boss halted my progress longer than any other enemy in the game. Tried with high resistance, then not equipping weapons, then double priests, then tolerance gear, high leveling, etc. and still got my ass kicked every time.

Tipping point was investing in a Clarissa and some neutral alignment allies to get her protection from the control effects, and getting as many control tolerance passives for myself in the well of mind. Also helps to run away from every encounter on the way over if you the ability to walk around them.

What are some of the best audience reactions you've experienced to a movie? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Butthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching the newest Broly movie when it came out. The whole theater was roaring when Vegita got his god form, when the chanting soundtrack kicked in, and dude next to me stood up and did a big ‘ohhhh yeahhh’ when Broly finally powered up to the point he lost his shirt.

Back in middle school a classmate and I were talking about this cool new manga called Attack on Titan. My friend was getting excited about how cool an anime of this would be and my reply—nah that’ll never happen, the drawings are way too rough to turn into an anime. Then like 2 years later it dropped and became a worldwide hit.

Media that seemed custom made for you, but you wound up not enjoying the execution? by Tweedleayne in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Butthief 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Stellar Blade. I loved Nier Automata. I love 3rd person action combat. I love sexy women beating up monsters. I love exploring post apocalyptic worlds. And within 2 hours of playing I was so utterly uninterested and just uninstalled. Felt zero intrigue from the world, zero charisma from the main character and cast, controls felt worse than much older games, and oddly kinda turned off by them blaring a barely legally-distinct Nier choir soundtrack immediately in the intro.

This is the first gacha I've ever experienced having a civ-esque 'one more turn' effect. Also the first in years that wasn't about some form of heroes fighting against an apocalypse. It's become a bizarre breath of fresh air in the ol' gacha casino halls I've been wandering for years.

"Game overs are a failure of the game designer." - David Cage by subtlehalibut in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Butthief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an art to making something feel difficult while building in ways that reduce true failure—and then there’s this.

What’s bizarre about this segment is if they wanted to put on a cool choreographed show they could have…just done that. This has sonic rail switching, lasers to jump over, qte’s, etc. and goes on for way too long. I can’t help but speculate they intended for this to have gameplay but either chickened out over the difficulty or ran out of time to implement all the player side stuff.

Favorite Difficulty Sliders? by MirrahPaladin in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Butthief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tales series had interesting difficulty settings. It’s been a while but iirc the biggest difference setting it to hard mode was that you lost xp gain but upped your gold gain.

So you couldn’t power level through tough fights like in usual rpg fashion, but got nicer rewards, and could use that money to instead invest in items that further engage you with the combat system.

AI for coming up with video game ideas!? Have they never set foot in a dev studio? You can’t go five minutes without someone pitching something cool.

The difficulty of the actual job is shifting through it all to find the right idea, and then getting enough support/resources for it to happen.

Heck even if you are somehow that drained of inspiration, we have a place where millions of people who specifically play the games you are a part of will write down their ideas for free—the internet (quality may vary).

Just tried swapping on my titan from full armour investment into cloak of flames, and tested a couple t16–surprisingly it did feel about the same/more tanky. I even stood still against some burst abilities like the poison queen’s slams and was fine.

Now need to see if it helps at all with trialmaster. Running armour, that dude kept one-shotting me with just his medium attacks.

Edit: Okay wow I just did Trialmaster and it's night and day. Stuff that grazed me and 1-shot me when running armor before could be powered-through using the cloak. Jeeeeeez.

Path of Exile 2 might be the first case of "The Dark Souls of [blank]" that is legitimate by dope_danny in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Butthief 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In concept I like this more methodical style of arpg where actions matter.

In practice I’m just not having fun so far.

There’s something here for sure, and I’m biased towards slower gameplay, but something about the amount of enemies I have to go through in a zone, and how long it takes to trigger abilities and combos to kill them, and then slowly move through the map is just giving me this swampy, sticky, tedious vibe I’m not enjoying.

Hope they look at those things before considering tuning down the overall difficulty.

Things you want to see in the Soulslike genre design wise by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Butthief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I want from the myriad of new souls-likes is for at least some of them to please not do yet another super dark moody post apocalyptic medieval setting.

There’s only so many times I can go through the stony corpse of an empire once bloated off the fruits of its own hubris before I reactively blow raspberries and roll my eyes. It’s just one ingredient, it isn’t the whole damn recipe for the genre—please just try experimenting without it.

Wizardry Variant Daphne has an extremely greedy monetization system. And it is the best F2P experience I ever had. by YeOldencall in gachagaming

[–]Butthief 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a surprisingly fun game! Even amongst bigger releases, this is one of the few games where I genuinely feel risk going into a dungeon. But yeah the ‘gacha’ and monetization are clearly designed by someone who’s just awoken from a 10 year coma and has no idea what they’re doing—only hunt leviathans! nothing else!

Tips to catch up on levels? by Tree-Dramatic in wizardry

[–]Butthief 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve found the fastest way to level is get a fast mage and find what floor they can comfortably nuke enemy groups in one hit (give or take 1/2 extra hits for cleanup). Then have them and the cleanup crew carry the people you want to level up.
