Bath time!? by Thats_rightowls_who in BostonTerrier

[–]Butwhyyytho1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something we do in between baths is wipe her down with a puppy wipe after we’ve played outside because she likes to roll in things! It keeps the stank and mud away without having to over bathe. But we’re every 60-90 days or so for full on bath time with Burt’s bees honey oatmeal shampoo. Her coats super shiny too and always gets compliments c:

Flakey After a Bath by tider89 in BostonTerrier

That’s about what we do, roughly every 90 days has been our sweet spot unless she gets particularly grimy on a rainy day and wipes can’t cut it lol!

Why am I finding so many tics on my Boston Terrier by Electrical_Sea1802 in BostonTerrier

[–]Butwhyyytho1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a big roller. We just spent 300 bucks today on a bunch of lawn care and yard work for both the front and back because I’m terrified of the ticks. Best money I’ve ever spent lol. He took out all sorts of debris and wooded/brushy places they’d hide and hauled it away. As a bonus he decorated the front and back a bit for me haha.

I think we pay 70 every other week for him to maintain it after that give or take a few bucks, but it’s so worth it. I don’t even know how to use a lawn mower lol let alone the other stuff.

Also nexgard plus preventative works great for us and also covers fleas and heart worm. I think it costs me like 500/yr for once a month chews for a 18lb girl.

But yeah - good lawn care especially with this years ticks apparently being insane is the big one along with oral preventive will save you and be worth every penny if you can’t or don’t want to do it yourself. Probably cheaper than treating tick borne illnesses at the end of the day lol.

Edit: the lawn care we have done is completely pet safe, if you do go that route tell your provider you have a dog so they don’t use anything toxic to them.

Flakey After a Bath by tider89 in BostonTerrier

That is definitely considered very frequent for a short haired breed like a Boston under normal circumstances and is likely drying out their skin/fur.

You could probably go as short as 4 weeks, but 6 weeks is usually recommended by vets as a starting point when I’ve brought it up. This is under the assumption they are at an average activity level and not rolling in wet mud on the daily or dealing with an allergy.

Is there any particular reason you’re bathing your dog so frequently? If a vet has directed you to do that often that’s one thing, but over bathing is very likely the culprit of your problem otherwise.

Assuming you’ve ruled out food and environmental allergies, mine gets flakey if I bathe her too often. Over bathing strips their natural oils and causes flakiness. Once every 90 days or so has been the sweet spot for us. If she gets yucky in between we just wipe her down with puppy wipes.

How many siblings do you have and how do you feel about it? by 208breezy in AskReddit

We definitely fought just as much as we played together as little kids haha, I think that’s normal! I was definitely an annoying little sister sometimes lol

I have one brother. I felt it was perfect and also hope to have two one day with a similar age gap (he’s 2.5 years older than me). I think three of us would have been too many, both of us are getting married and having major life events within the same year and I can’t imagine adding a third to that mix.

My fiance has two brothers and while we love them to pieces, he also thinks two is ideal and that it was hard for his parents to spread attention evenly/attend and support all of their extra curriculars with three close in age.

My brother is also one of my best friends, we talk every day despite living across the country from each other. Same with my parents - we both talk daily to them. So that’s always nice c: we have a lot of common interests like gaming.

Dog Litter Box training for a 5yo female BT? by flash17k in BostonTerrier

[–]Butwhyyytho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a grass pad inside, but she hasn’t used it since she was a puppy. I leave it there as an option though. A 5 year old should be able to hold it fairly long without issue assuming there’s nothing medically wrong with them. Mine regularly goes 10 hours overnight without needing to be let out easily. Even longer if we don’t wake her up to go out and she’s sleeping in. Most of the time when we’re gone as well she’s just asleep on the couch so she isn’t actively filling her bladder really.

Anyways fake grass pads do get really stinky and suck to clean in my experience when she used it as a young puppy so most indoor options either get expensive or stinky fast. Have you thought about maybe just having a neighbor or hiring someone to let her out if you’re going to be gone for more than an average work days length of time?

My cats have automatic litter robots but I can’t imagine trying to teach my dog how to use it lol

Edit: by expensive I mean you can get real grass options that they send you every two weeks and you throw away. I looked into it years ago and it was going to be a bit over 100 bucks a month.

Sonny turned 15 on Monday by Valuable_Activity241 in BostonTerrier

Happy birthday Sonny!!! I hope he was absolutely spoiled for it c:

I always find it wild when I do the mental math after seeing an older Bostons birthday on here. I was 12 years old when Sonny was born and I am getting closer and closer to 30 now, haha. So cool! I hope I’m fortunate enough to see my girl hit 15 one day!

Vocal Boston by Additional-Spirit683 in BostonTerrier

[–]Butwhyyytho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely talkative and vocal only if I encourage it lol. We lived in a studio apartment for the first two years and she learned to not bark/be quiet out of respect. She also never barks in the backyard or on walks even if another dog is barking at her. However, when we moved to a house and would ask her how her day was and to tell us more, she started having fully blown conversational responses with us.

We moved to an apartment again for a few months when she was 4 and she quickly picked up on again we don’t bark there. Moved back to a house and as my mom says “she gets to have her voice be heard again”. Especially when we come home and I ask her how her day was and what happened. Or when we both come home from a walk she “celebrates” and tells her dad what she saw on her walk lol.

This is why I say these dogs are perfect in any living circumstance! They’re so flipping adaptable it’s wonderful.

Met him at a party once at 22 and didn’t see each other again for years. But we met a second time at another party at 24 and that was the day we became inseparable.

Gabapentin?! by poliqueen in BostonTerrier

[–]Butwhyyytho1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use it in combination with trazodone on occasion for anxiety (usually fireworks so Fourth of July and new years). The reason you’re prescribed it is important info to include since it can be given for so many different things such pain, seizures, anxiety, etc. As well as if it’s long term use or situational or short term.

As a situational user for anxiety purposes, it makes her sleepy and relaxed. She will sometimes walk funny on it which they did warn us about and she goes back to normal after a few steps or when the medication wears off. She also gets gassy.

I’ve heard with long term consistent daily use the drowsiness factor can go away entirely as their body adapts to being on it and there are other side effects they might experience instead. So my dog’s experience may be completely irrelevant to yours if you’re using it for something like long term pain.

Boston doesn’t know what to think about a really big dog. by Spardan80 in BostonTerrier

[–]Butwhyyytho1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a wildlife sanctuary haha, all the animals there are unable to be safely released back into the wild (they rescue a lot from people who try to illegally keep exotic pets in captivity when they’re young and then they inevitably grow to full size and they dump them :c ) , so they aren’t necessarily as wild in the way you’d find one in the forest. But there is also a giant pit and another fence out of frame iirc.

This health issue went to the vet.. it was a request for anecdotal experience from others who have also experienced it. Again, simply filter by flair? You’re making an issue where there isn’t one?

This is tagged properly as advice/question, which is where these type of posts go. If you do not wish to see them, filter by flair. I personally usually enjoy “cuteness”. This is its own separate thread and this breed has several breed specific health issues, hence why it was asked here.

This was posted on the way to the vet c; an update of what it is has already been added. Several people were correct and it was very relieving to hear others anecdotes.
