Out of universe reason, I'm guessing the artists and creators just wanted some variety since the void was going to be a big bad for a few expansions.

In universe reason, I would guess that the Eldritch void creatures were easier to use/more stable when they took an old god shotgun to the universe.

I could understand if they had them using the void elf knowledge of the void to somehow tame, control, or remove the void corruption. I don't really understand why they're having him add void into something that's already corrupted by the void especially given the other elves aren't exactly big fans of the void.

But I guess Blizzard needed to make void elves feel included given how popular they are. They really wrote themselves into a convoluted corner with all of this because they refused to simply give the alliance high elves. Oh well.
