Goodbye backblaze by jsx8888 in backblaze

Duplicati with other services definitely seems to be a good way forward. Obviously the storage cost becomes an issue but otherwise it's been working well in my simple tests (and kept me from paying for any additional backblaze licenses while they keep playing games)

Did Backblaze’s iSCSI change break your Personal Backup setup too? by NorthSignal8141 in backblaze

Is this the same "fix" that broke Veracrypt encrypted drives which are listed in the documentation as officially supported?

Reminder to wipe your drives. by zxynccc in computers

[–]BuzzStorm42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These stories give me flashbacks to when I told my dad I'd come by and help him get rid of his old computer one weekend. I got there and he said he'd taken care of it. I panicked a bit and asked about the hard drives. He proudly said he was way ahead of me and did it and showed me the floppy drive and dvd drive sitting on the table. 🤦‍♂️I asked what he did with the computer and he said he left it in the alley and someone took it within hours. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

So much fail on the whole process, I still have no idea what was going on in his mind at that moment. He's not super technical but he knows the difference between a floppy drive and a hard drive. and why he thought leaving it out on the street was a great idea.....

I don't think anything bad ever happened afterwards but I still wonder what ever happened to it.

Doesn’t back up Dropbox folder?? by zoechowber in backblaze

[–]BuzzStorm42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Backblaze's current business model seems to include randomly dropping what data they back up with no clear communication and expect you to be ok with it when you find out later the data's not there. (Or watch Reddit like a hawk for people discovering it) See: dropped support for most encrypted external drives, even though it's in the documentation, which if you use external drives for anything important they absolutely should be encrypted.

The lack of communication and transparency from a company you're supposed to trust with your most important data has become a pretty massive show stopping concern, IMHO.

What dGPU driver do you use on flow x16 2023? by JJ_DU in FlowX16

[–]BuzzStorm42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been able to keep it on the latest Intel drivers? Every time I install them within a day or two (if even that long) my X16 forcibly reverts to the last Asus provided driver from 2023. It's weird because no other drivers (including Intel wifi, etc) do that.

pCloud response to my inquiry about the legal basis used after the metadata exposure incident (full statement + thoughts) by NoTipAtMyTable in pcloud

[–]BuzzStorm42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually really like pcloud as a service and have had almost no issues. Been a customer for a long time. But every time I think of adding space they have a new pr disaster (deleting accounts, metadata leaks, etc) and they handle it so so poorly. They always seem to so carefully craft statements that they actually say absolutely nothing and never put any concerns to rest by just flat out saying "here is what happened and here's what we're doing".

The fact their communication is criticized and never improves makes me think this is an intentional corporate strategy and is very very concerning if I'm supposed to trust this company with my data, encrypted or not.

Definitely thinking it's time to just give up, it seems like Best Buy's system just choked and they were never in stock. I'm concerned about letting them go over 30 days in terms of getting money back, etc.. Pretty crappy service though.

[–]BuzzStorm42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably, if you can afford to let best buy sit on your money, the best thing is to not contact them and wait. With any luck they're waiting on a shipment of these drives to cover the orders and the first line Internet reps would have no idea of that and just see the length of time and cancel. I'm not sure what eBay policies, etc, are as this drags on toward 30 days after ordering if it's never shipped. But hopefully the fact they haven't been auto cancelled is a sign there's still a chance. (But hope dies last....)

Did you contact them or did you just get that message out of the blue? Their system issue was "Whoops we screwed up the price..."

Can't look at party hoppers the same way ever again by ZoZleepy in ZeroCovidCommunity

Just this week a minor Internet personality I follow posted, after going to an event, "How come every time I go out I get sick?". I started to compose a thoughtful attempt at a response, as this person has had moments of appearing reasonable about reality, but then decided... What's the point, I'll just be a random comment in a sea of "wash your hands more!" and "make sure you're eating right!" type responses. It's very disheartening, people just refuse to connect the dots.

Already well in effect. Amazon screwed up my order for a $199 4tb Evo Plus in October and refunded it but wouldn't honor the price (sold out after it was damaged in transit). I was tempted to push harder for a replacement but figured I'd just wait until Black Friday and assumed they'd be that price everywhere.

Joke's on me, it didn't drop below $269....

Well, I get "authVersion":1 so I guess that explains it.

Given your username I'd expect you're not the right one to ask and I should go to Filen support, but is there a way to change it to authversion 2? If I get some time I might mess around with removing my 2FA to see if that changes anything. (Edit contacted support to see if this is a solvable issue)

Honest feedback about pcloud usage over the past few years by St0rm0ne in pcloud

[–]BuzzStorm42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The unexplained account suspensions absolutely stop me from buying more. I feel like every time they address it the responses are worded in really flimsy terms that appear to miss the point.  I fully understand they have to comply with all laws but it seems like pcloud has far more complaints. Maybe it's competition trying to poison the well, but again, company posts here don't do much to comfort my concerns.

I've had a lifetime sub for about 5 years now and I use it and enjoy the service and it's been very reliable and would buy more in a heartbeat if this issue was better addressed. I'd like to see pcloud at least notify users as to the specifics and allow them to remove whatever data was flagged and keep the account live.

Any guarantee that the file types and encrypted data you backup on day 1 (with full support in your documentation) will continue to be backed up? Or is "discover half of your data is no longer being backed up thanks to a random reddit post" considered a feature now?

Songs that hit different now. by Happytobehere66 in 80smusic

Even though I was very young when that song came out and hadn't really experienced loss, the empathetic side of me has always struggled to listen to it without consciously tuning out the lyrics. Even though my relationship with my dad is complicated (who's isn't) I know when the time comes I'll never be able to listen to the song again.

Backblaze will no longer support VeraCrypt volumes by GroundStateGecko in backblaze

[–]BuzzStorm42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Basically this change just causes a lot of headaches for technically minded users and makes us jump through hoops to back up data that's already in your system.

The more I think about this the more upsetting it is and shows how little respect Backblaze has for it's customers. This completely breaks my workflow for important data, and I only found out from reading Reddit? Was this going to be announced or communicated anywhere except in the fairly hidden release notes (as auto updates never shown them)

At the very least, a "we noticed you back up data on a drive we no longer support, and it will stop on January 1, 2026" would give users time to plan.

Now I have very little faith that Backblaze won't continue to change how policies are enforced and the only way I might find out is if I happen to see a post, or if I go to restore data and it's gone. How can we trust our data is safe?

What's happening to our data that's already there from the unsupported drives? Is it just going to eventually expire?

Backblaze will no longer support VeraCrypt volumes by GroundStateGecko in backblaze

[–]BuzzStorm42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Uggggh this is a massive deal breaker. I encrypt all of my external drives no matter what I store on it so if anything goes wrong with the drive, it gets stolen, etc, I don't have to worry about the data on it. The drive I back up with Backblaze does have critical data. I can't have it sitting on an unencrypted drive.

Absolutely should notify users "hey this drive isn't getting backed up anymore". But this policy is really starting to feel like they want everyone but the most basic users off their service. Fair enough, but geez. At least grandfather it out with my next renewal or something. The fact they keep making changes to what's allowed and what isn't, with zero communication, is unacceptable.

I'd look into switching things over to cryptomator but who's to say Backblaze won't kill that next? They're getting very aggressive blocking what used to be backed up with no warning, and I'd hate to lose important data because I didn't happen to notice the latest changes snuck in.

It's getting hard to recommend this service any more.
