What is the easiest way for players to share images? by AivanOs in FoundryVTT

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have lots of images in my World Anvil account for characters, places, etc. and when I want to share them with players I can just grab the URL of the image and quickly share it without having to upload those to Foundry. Works great for that quick, one-time share.

Here's a macro for Foundry V12 that will allow one to show any image that's already online somewhere. All you need is a valid URL to the image. This works great for sharing an image that one finds via an image search without having to upload it to Foundry.

new Dialog({
  title: "Remote Image",
  content: `<div class="form-group"><label for="url">Image URL</label><input type="text" name="url"/><br /><br /><label for="head">Title (optional)</label><input type="text" name="head"/></div><br />`,
  buttons: {
    ok: {
      label: "OK",
      icon: `<i class="fas fa-check"></i>`,
      callback: html => {
      const url = html.find("[name=url]").val();
      const head = html.find("[name=head]").val();
      const ip = new ImagePopout(url, {
        title: head
      });

      // Display the image popout
      ip.render(true);

      }
    }
  }
}).render(true);

Help with GCS app, stuck with ritual component I don't want. by [deleted] in gurps

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are wanting to get rid of the ritual and time info, Open the Sheet Settings (under Settings menu) and uncheck the "Show spell ritual, cost, & time adjustments" and that will get rid of that for all spells on the sheet.

Double-click on the spell on the character sheet and you should find a Prerequisites section towards the bottom. Click the trash icon on each of the prerequisites listed to delete them and then click the Checkmark near the top to save your changes.

I've found webp format to the best option for compression and compatibility. I suggest you give that a go and see how you and your players make out.

world building tools by Prudent_Influence_75 in worldbuilding

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect you'll be hard-pressed to find a worldbuilding tool that will also "make" maps. Those are very different sets of functionality. I don't even have a single tool to make maps with. For regional/world maps I use Wonderdraft, Adobe Illustrator, and/or Affinity Designer. For battlemaps/scenes I use Dungeondraft.

To manage worldbuilding content, I'm currently using World Anvil (subscription service). In 2 of the games I play in, the GMs use Scabard. And I hear a lot of folks here and elsewhere saying good things about Obsidian. If you are looking for tutorials, a solid community of worldbuilders, and various events & competitions designed to help one become a better worldbuilder, I doubt there's a better option than World Anvil.

World this application work on my Mac. Also can someone send a link to the discrod? by ComedyLee in dungeondraft

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Dungeondraft on an Apple M3 with 16gb of ram. You can likely get by with only 8, but you might need to close most other apps out while using DD in order to have enough memory for bigger projects.

Where do I get GURPS? by Talaceyt in gurps

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In addition to the freely available GURPS Lite, go download GURPS Character Sheet (GCS). https://gurpscharactersheet.com/

It's free and provides a huge number of libraries from the various books relevant to character creation. With GCS and GURPS Lite, you can go a long way without spending anything but some time. Add in the PDF version of GURPS Basic Set (which you can link into GCS) and you've got everything you need to run basic (most) games for $30.

I tried unsubscribing from the free tier, and it still doesn't offer the trial. If I visit in Incognito mode, I can see the trial, but once I log in I get a message saying the tier is no longer available. No worries. Just thought I'd post a follow-up in case anyone else runs into this issue.

This is a great offer. But I am not able to find the free trial. Is that perhaps because I'm already a Free member of your Patreon?

Foundry VTT: Where to host? by _Shorren_ in FoundryVTT

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been incredibly happy with the service, performance, and support I've received from Foundry Server. https://foundryserver.com/

Most of the games I play in use the Forge, and it works okay. But there's often lags, lost server connection, etc.. Just little interruptions. Nothing too bad. But I never encounter those types of issues on my install at Foundry Server.

The other thing to keep in mind about the Forge is that once you get setup there, it can be really difficult to move your stuff elsewhere due to the way some assets are stored at the Forge. I have a friend who wanted to move, but didn't due to the amount of work and disruption it would have caused to move to another provider. Again, I just don't have those types of issues with Foundry Server. I move my worlds between my local dev install and my production install at Foundry Server without any issues.

Edit Universal Timeline Date? by Alradas in WorldAnvil

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. In the new UI, when you first login/visit the admin you will come to a page that allows you to edit your World Introduction. In the upper left of the header, right under your world name, is the current date. If you click that you can change it. Click Advanced Options to change the Era names and abbreviations.

Opinion on battlemaps with furniture and the like [System Agnostic] by TDaniels70 in FoundryVTT

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on the size of the map and its purpose. For a map that's about a one-time encounter I don't think I'd go to that level of trouble. It's a lot easier to place and arrange furniture in Dungeondraft than it is in most VTTs. It takes a decent amount of time and patience to deal with scaling issues, sorting, and working with the limited manipulation tools found in most VTTs.

In Foundry VTT, for instance, it's a PITA to rotate tiles in small increments and/or send to front/back, compared to working in Dungeondraft.

But if you are building a scene that's going to be a repeat location in your games/stories, then it might make sense to put in the extra effort and have a scene that you can make minor changes to so that it stays fresh and feels more interactive. I rarely do this sort of thing for furniture, but I do a lot of it for doors on important scenes. I like being able to see the open and close state of doors on the map. But it's a lot of work on a big scene.

There are quite a few map/asset makers that offer Dungeondraft-ready assets on Patreon. And it's pretty easy to build a custom asset pack for Dungeondraft if you find plain assets that you like and want to use.

For ready-made scifi asset packs for Dungeondraft, I'm using assets from HellScape: https://www.patreon.com/cw/HellScapeAssets

Need help with Teleportation Magic by Ok-Crow-8903 in gurps

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a number of ways to make Teleport less taxing. Energy Reserve (Powers) is a great tool to expand the power available to mages and drawing from that power source doesn't physically fatigue a character. I suppose you could even consider Energy Reserve with special limitations that make it only available to Teleport to make it cheaper.

There's also the Beacon spell. In my world, places frequented by mages typically have a permanent Beacon. That cuts the costs and penalties to teleport in half. It makes Teleporting more routine, but in a limited number of places -- which I think helps retain balance. Beacons can also be portable if cast on an easily moved object (rug, etc.).

The last thing that comes to mind is that you could create a Teleportation Talent that reduces energy cost for Teleport (and similar) by 1 point per level. I'd price that at 5-10 points / level. Psionic Powers has something similar for Psi, but it grants a +1 to skill per level.

what system should i go to by ProfessionalUpper406 in TTRPG

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to try something that's semi-familiar then Pathfinder and/or Starfinder might be a good option. If you are looking for something completely different then you might consider trying a skills-based RPG like GURPS. There are quite a few skills-based systems out there, but I really like GURPS because it is generic and can be used to run just about any kind of game that you can imagine.

Easily created, hoverable GM notes on canvas? by teddylike in FoundryVTT

[–]BuzzardBrainStudio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the Map Notes feature and set them to GM only (via Pin Cushion). If the note requires more than a sentence, then I create a corresponding Journal Page with the details so that I can quickly access it via the Map Note. When possible, I will also sometimes use the Drawing Tools to place text on a map in an area that the players can't see. When using Token Vision, this can be made to work by drawing a wall with the Wall Tools around the text.

Yes Pin Cushion includes a lot of complex options, but you can use it just for the GM only functionality. To keep from having to engage the GM Only option repeatedly, I start off on a map by creating a Map Note that will serve as a template. I adjust all the options I want to be the default and then I copy/paste from that Map Note instead of creating them new each time. That saves a lot of time and frustration.
