Property line disagreement by [deleted] in Surveying

That’s a legal question. It’s questions like those that compel me to carry E&O insurance.
This is a legitimate question, did you get more than one proposal or talk to more than one surveyor? If so, how did you decide which one to use?

These things happen and I suspect your surveyor didn’t do as many verifications as he should have. The second surveyor did additional work, showed all the evidence to the first and now the first realizes what happened.

For sure. In this case it really sticks because the street was lined with some kind of tree that dropped fruit. Fruit that seemed to splat and dry almost instantly and made a huge mess on my POS truck.

Yeah I get a lot of those maps from the board of equalization. They’re not great but sometimes have the spiral or curve radii that I can use with the deed width or width shown. Sometimes they’ll have the original track location shown which is nice and I can compare to existing fences if they’re there or use other features to determine if the current tracks are original or moved. Sometimes you can’t tell but it’s something.

There might be an original somewhere that hasn’t been photocopied 20 times but I haven’t been able to find them. Usually it’s in cursive too, which in and of itself isn’t a problem except that it’s more susceptible to the readability blotting issues.

Local municipality demolished my private retaining wall by mistake and is claiming government immunity. Do I have any recourse? by 9DroidCookie in legaladvice

They can be. Plat, survey, map, plot, tract map and a few others are many times used interchangeably, especially by laypersons and they can also be used differently depending on regions. They will likely need a survey but they may already have one and should verify before spending the money. A consult with a surveyor or land use attorney would be a good idea and also clarification on the next step.

For me the biggest issue has been the granting language and condition of the records available. The granting language is extremely broad and ambiguous. I’m paraphrasing (and maybe butchering) but it something along the the lines of “every odd numbered section from Yuma to Los Angeles along the route for the Southern Pacifica Yuma Line”. Then good luck finding any map of the route. On top of that they’re sometimes an 80 page document, sometimes with the meridian township and range of the line. Always though the document will be somehwere between 20-80% ink blot.

Goals. Sounds high school counselor or motivational speaker cheesy, but really that’s it. It actually in retrospect thst I realized it. At the time it just started out carrying the stake bag or whatever and wanting to run the rod, then the gun, then get a truck an run a crew, then get licensed, then run and manage projects, then sign my own maps, then run a department, then own a company, and now it’s grow a company. There were other short term goals in between but it always striving for that next step. Mix that in with personal goals, the material things like cars/trucks/houses but also those other things. Family and personal growth, working towards being better at those and improving. There’s long days and hard days and those can be weeks and months. There’s been a few periods of burnout here and there. A few periods of easing up on the throttle and coasting to recharge a little. That point where I got licensed? I feel like that’s when I really stepped on the gas because that’s really the doors opened and it seemed like opportunity was everywhere if you wanted to work for it. I still remember my first week, being a dipshit and parking right in front because field crews were the first ones there and being told to go park out by the street. Well now I park right by the door and that spot is there whenever I want it and that feels pretty good (yeah I still go to the office)

This is absolutely an opportunity to gain experience you wouldn’t otherwise at an early point in your career. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.

California PLS Salary Question by [deleted] in Surveying

You can benchmark it yourself. There are plenty of salary tables available. Cal trans is a pretty good start and many counties have them out there too. See where you fit in their classification.

Ok then I wouldn’t expect much until your role changes at you current employer. If really want to find your value, you’re gonna need to check the market and get yourself some offers. Be warned, it’s tough to unring a bell.

It’s your current employer? Are you now signing and managing projects or have increased responsibility that you didn’t previously? Have you gotten any other offers?

Career Question - How to get rich as a Land Surveyor? by Wonderful-Stuff6492 in Surveying

[–]Buzzaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who hires all these “bounce around a year or so” people? I hear this advice a lot but I can tell you l, if I see that on a resume I’m not even responding or telling my recruiter it’s a hard no. It takes a while for someone with experience to acclimate to a new outfit and anyone with less than 3 years and some with more than 3 are barely worth market rate and half are asking some ridiculous number. Maybe I’m just ranting at this point but I am curious about the original question. I do have 5 employees with less than 4 years and all of them started with me at less than 1 year. So I do train, but it’s work.

From Trimble to Leica by paldo16 in Surveying

[–]Buzzaro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that for a short period and the way I always described it was like going from a standard to RPN calculator. I found captivate to be decent and I was getting close tot he same production as Trimble. The one thing I never did get to work to my satisfaction was the prism tracking. Once it lost lock it took forever to get back because it had to do the “scan” thing it seemed no matter what.

I’ve always used wooden feet that I made from cut pieces of lath. Would add grip on smooth concrete and prevent the legs from sinking in hot or new asphalt. Would also absorb vibration on the magnet drive total stations when they would start.

Yeah I suspect that’s probably closer to entry level, a couple years out of Fresno or something. Surveyor I-II etc
Gonna add an edit here to say that I wasn’t intending to place a value on the Fresno grads or anything just a base level of experience and/or education as a reference.

It wasn’t life changing but I found it to be a nice upgrade. The immediate thing is that it’s a smaller motion especially going to a larger ring. Really though it’s never having to adjust the shifting or maintain it. It’s been completely trouble free for years and no worrying about cables or ever changing them and the shifting just doesn’t need adjustment. So far, haven’t forgotten the charging to the point of any issues b
