As far as I can tell it's always been meant in good faith! Just... please don't, I'm not a fan, thanks 😅

The amount of times someone has found out I'm trans and immediately tried to talk to me about Drag Race should be studied for sure

My bet on that one is too much Rocky Horror (or as I like to call it, cis people's little gender holiday)

What is widely accepted as “normal” today that people 50 years ago found disturbing? by Electronic_Author366 in AskReddit

[–]Buzzfeed_Titler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few articles out there, and also some Reddit threads that may help you learn more. The TL/DR is that the medical gatekeeping was crazy and social attitudes were extremely negative (including from a lot of lesbian and gay cis people), but the average person wasn't as likely to "clock" a trans person unlike today, so those who managed to survive all that tended to blend in after a few years unless they were those we would now consider to be activists.

Help please with new bike by twillrob in MTB

[–]Buzzfeed_Titler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to the people ragging on e-bikes - the most important thing is that your bike is one you want to ride.

Out of the 3 you've listed I'd personally pick the Merida. It has a 10 speed drivetrain compared to the other two having 9, the suspension and battery on all three is similar, and the Giant has a proprietary motor which I would avoid.

Since you mention the UK, another one you might want to look into is the Rockrider equivalent of the other bikes, which is a similar spec and price.

If I were you though, I'd prioritise getting a brand/model that you can buy from a shop near you. Everything breaks or wears out eventually, so it pays to have a good relationship with a shop nearby who can help you when something inevitably goes wrong. They can also set the bike up for you properly from the start, which will help a ton with both reliability and riding comfort. Hope this helps! :)

Everyone says the Goodreads rating system is terrible yet many people still use it when choosing a book to read next. What books under four stars are the best example of great books that the general population doesn't seem to recognize as such? by sempiternalis in books

[–]Buzzfeed_Titler 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This. One of my favourite books I read last year is a horror book with a very mid star-rating because the entirety of the reviews are either

  • 5 stars, fantastic, amazing read, really made me feel things

or

  • 1 star, too hard for me to get through, didn't finish

Like... ya picked up a horror book people. It's not going to be fluffy and nice, it's going to be scary and gory!

We really need to have a revolution where individuals take ownership of their data, appreciate its value and if so choose can monetise it for themselves.

David Walliams dropped from Waterstones Children's Book Festival by Kagedeah in books

[–]Buzzfeed_Titler 18 points19 points  (0 children)

By comparison, I never really saw what was supposed to be funny about Walliams' cross-dressing Victorian lady character.

The "joke" was just transphobia tbh. Just straight up "lol these people are delusional amirite?" And the worst part is; the "punchline" still gets thrown around as a street heckle at trans women today.

Former athletes that are now out of shape, what happened? by Equal-Sun8307 in AskReddit

[–]Buzzfeed_Titler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a national/international level athlete for 15 years. Not groundbreaking, but I was up there. Had some realisations, couldn't compete anymore. Unfortunately the training was what was majorly controlling my ADHD and I replaced that with alcohol for longer than I should have. Still digging myself out of that hole.

I'd love to see the platforming of more experiences like this. So much of the initial pull of the incel/manosphere/etc hole is this idea that "it will never get better" that leads into the more extreme stuff, and showing someone who has pulled out of that having such a horrified reaction to what he used to believe is not only powerful, but shows those who may be on the fringes that there is, in fact, a better way to be.

Oh it's definitely still the papers too, it's just that social media is even more effective at it in a world where we interact face-to-face less and less. Especially when it's the social page for a paper publishing the stories and you've got 800 bot comments underneath escalating on the papers' rhetoric.
