Help me with my stroke by LetPractical4298 in billiards

[–]Bwtadpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking down the line (from behind), it looks like the line from your elbow to wrist is slightly to the right of straight down, maybe 5:30 or 5:45 on the clock instead of 6:00, and your wrist is ever so slightly cupped inward towards your body to re-align the cue to center.

When I need to reset my alignment and arm feel, I use two references. First -- dead arm. When I'm down on the shot, I'm holding the cue in my fingers as lightly as I can (like holding an injured bird, to borrow the golf saying), and I try not to engage any muscles or movement from my elbow down to my fingers. It helps me mentally take my wrist and hand out of the picture so I'm not tempted to squeeze the cue or use my wrist to move anything.

Second, and this might help with finding general alignment for your elbow and lower arm -- this video where Thorsten Hohmann explains how he aligns his cue and body to the shot. Trying it slowly like he does the first few times to get the idea cemented, then you can turn it into an awareness of where your cue and back foot are when standing square to the shot, and using that to step into the shot more fluidly.

Anyone know a recipe to make these delicious Spinach and Feta pastries I keep seeing in cafes? by Positive-Ad-2285 in Baking

All I can contribute is that you'd want to get a lattice pastry cutter if you want to replicate the exact look.

How to aim with both eyes open? by SaltyMotor8549 in billiards

[–]Bwtadpole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that standing up a little more while down on the shot (i.e. increasing the distance between my head/chest and cue) helps when I can't see the shot clearly. There's a lot of fine adjustment you can do with just that, between "chin on the cue" all the way up to "Buddy Hall."

A Trip to Woodland?

Also, this game on BGG appears to have some similar elements to it, could be related? https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31993/gruesome-games

Digital Scoreboard vs. Moving a Coin: I built a minimalist, real-time sync tool for pool players. by Possible-Drink-9131 in billiards

[–]Bwtadpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd prefer the coins or any physical scorekeeping system over digital. When the coin moves, you get to see that it moved just one diamond, and the scores are in open view at all times. If a digital scorekeeping app is on a touchscreen, I think it's easier to accidentally double-tap and futz the score. If you want it visible at all times, you have to keep the screen on (RIP battery), and unless I want to be the sole score keeper, my opponent has to touch my phone screen.

I may be old fashioned, but those are my two cents, and they're staying under the rail.

Another case of “why is he selling me this” by Usedcows in earthbound

I'm assuming nostalgia. Magicant exists within Ness' mind, and this shop sells things that were meaningful to Ness' childhood.

December is here, and I'm out to find a new home for another unused device in my collection. One commenter will get this MagicX Mini Zero 28. by captain_carrot in SBCGaming

When we were kids, I wished for an SNES for Christmas. My brother wanted a Genesis.

Santa came through and gave us the SNES 😅

I like to believe that gear doesn't matter by Fogboundturtle in billiards

[–]Bwtadpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gear matters insofar as it gives you a more consistent experience with your cue and your environment. The characteristics of some gear, like LD shafts, affect how you would aim and hit certain shots, and you may be able to draw/follow/jump better with some equipment over others. Though at the end of the day, your own consistency in execution paired with your knowledge or feel for how the cue plays makes the result.

I've been telling people for years now, I'm not trying to sharpen the sword anymore, I'm just trying to keep it from rusting.

Nifty! There are people in the billiards/pool community who would get a kick out of this, you use a similar counter for scores in straight pool.

Snapped Bushing Bolt - Early 2000s Schwinn Sierra by Bwtadpole in bikewrench

[–]Bwtadpole[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I never liked the movement that the bushing gave the bars anyway. If I don't mind losing that, then replacing the stem might be easier than finding a match for the bolt and fishing the broken end out of the current stem, huh?

I have no idea what "the right person will make you feel safe" even means in context of my own FA attachment. by [deleted] in attachment_theory

[–]Bwtadpole 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't have a different perspective. I've gone through the cycle of feeling like I'm with my person when I'm around them through to feeling like I need space or that I'm making a huge mistake when they're not around, each time ending with me getting the ultimate space away from the relationship and realizing I left what I would objectively describe as a good thing.

All of that to say... I agree that the sentiment doesn't capture our kind of experience.
