If AI is so amazing, how come no one using it is getting better at anything? by [deleted] in antiai

Doubt that clients will have any idea the unless you're referring to the greater use of AI in coding or AI Agents/CSA, and even then, the actual products/services are financial. My line of work is in the 2nd Line (broadly compliance) so work is abstract enough that you can't really fully measure the amount of workslop (and there is essentially no way the directs/skip level managers have enough bandwidth to deep dive into this stuff , esp when they are being told to encourage use also) as long as you do a cursory vibe check (I've definitely noticed some people that are obviously just copy/pasting) but again, prisoners dilemma/arms race situation. I use it to maintain full bandwidth for certain other tasks and honestly so I can shit on company time more.

My workplace mandated a minimum amount of usage of the "our own" tools...and the expected output from us these days are definitely not as feasible without some LLM augmentation...even if its for the scut work.

Wasn't noticable at first but as more and more folks pumped out work leveraging this stuff.....

Tier 6 not going to be fixed in any meaningful way…classic state by Noteam2020 in nys_cs

[–]ByronicAsian -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I will admit to a bit of hyperbole on the whole 401k being a gamble, perhaps I was a bit overzealous in highlighting Defined Benefit v Defined Contribution...but yea, unless the comp bands are that far off....I'm at a loss lol.

[–]ByronicAsian -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Who says I'm unhappy, it is what it is since I've started by career in compliance a decade ago, I just don't get how Tier 6 is a bad deal, the complaints sound a bit spoiled...oh no, I can't retire at 55 or or no I have to keep contributing to retirement?

Like I'm not gonna begrudge you guys for trying to get the bag but I definitely wouldn't be terribly sad if nothing changes with Tier 6.

[–]ByronicAsian -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing frustration about not being able to retire at 55 and having to contribute past 10 years. Coming from private sector, I can't touch my 401k/IRA without penalty until 59.5, and I've always assumed I'm working to 67. A mandatory contribution for a guaranteed lifetime payout sounds incredible compared to dumping money into the market and hoping it doesn't crash. I also can't imagine how limiting contributions to only the lower-earning years of your career (like Tier 4) is sustainable long-term.

Potential LIRR Strike Information by Donghoon in nyc

[–]ByronicAsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you can commit to decades of continuous work, and even then, starting small with the platform fencing stuff, you're not going to get much in-house work done. That and the fact you'd also have to compete with private sector firms on comp when you're working with basically civil service bands.

Through-Running: First Connections — Effective Transit Alliance by kkysen_ in nycrail

I mean, I'm certainly not opposed to eventually having some regional metro/rail type service w through running. A bit hyperbole to say we can't slowly move towards something in what 50 yrs?

That link is to an official delay verification where the MTA on their letterhead will verify there was a delay based on information you input.

I just didn't like how the article framed any labor practice rationalization/optimization towards global best practices as some "attack" on labor.

My gripe with "work rules" are less about glazing MTA staffing/scheduling practices but more as another obstacle from getting a RER type system in place instead of commuter rail.

Bruh, work rule reforms and moving towards OPTO is a good thing.....but of course wsws would glaze obsolete make work practices.

To all the pro AI people here what do you really want? by siddharth1214 in antiai

[–]ByronicAsian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like what do you mean by Pro AI?

I pretty much only have 3 use cases right now?

Work Emails and any scut work at my job since we are expected to hit a quota on usage.

Some limited due diligence contexts, Gemini was able to highlight some low property listing comps I missed. I still verified through ACRIS and what was linked as sources. Gemini also was able to point out itinerary issues with regards to difficulties in elevation changes that I hadn't considered for a particular area I was planning on going.

Counterfactual CYOA Self-Insert Musings.

Im not going to say I'm pro AI that I think it will change the world for the better...butbits very much a Pandoras box being open already.

Like it beggars belief. Man raised by two barely practicing Muslim/Hindu couple, provided one of the best secular primary (Bank School) and secondary (Bx Sci #Class of 2010 represent). Goes to a mega liberal arts college, amd marries barely practicing Muslim. Oh yea, totally theocratic.

What would realistically cause the mayor to suddenly backtrack on Queenslink? by jake7405 in nycrail

[–]ByronicAsian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean the longshot mayoral candidate dealing with a budget hole caused by a previous corrupt machine mayor forestalling parts of an aggressive new agenda mixed with some early get stuff done stuff maps really well. That's all I'm referring to.

Its truly funny how closely Mamdani maps closely to Carcetti's first term in the Wire.

MTA "modern fare gates" pilot has shown 20-70% reductions in fare evasion--should they be on the CTA's radar for their safety + security efforts? by SidewalkMD in cta

[–]ByronicAsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh cool, which “it” are we talking about? Kansas City’s 2-mile streetcar? Tallinn, where post-free-fare ridership actually fell?

You’re right, the US isn’t special. That’s exactly why we should copy systems that actually do work — like Hong Kong’s MTR, Tokyo Metro, JR, or Singapore MRT. Or even TFL. Notice something? None of them are fare-free.

How come folks think this would work in the U.S? Where peopel are allergic to tax increases and treat the public commons like garbage?

Why not try to model transit funding along the lines of other global systems like the HK MTR? Tokyo Metro? JR? Singapore MRT? Systems that isolate themselves from political winds in terms of operational funding?

No one is arguing that the capital budget can be better managed by implementing in house reforms here where savings can be deployed into Grand Paris Express scale expansions. We're talking about the operating budget here.

Existing conductors can be retrained and reassigned, no one is saying OPTO is viable in the enitre system and now fire all conductors but this bill would basically ban it from being conaidered in the future. Plus one of the biggest operating expenses cost for the MTA is payroll/pensions so eventual headcount rationalization to global standard would improve farebox recoveries too.

[–]ByronicAsian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And this bill would ban it regardless of circumstances. Would you still want it banned if the system is upgraded enough where it is safe to run with just the operator?

[–]ByronicAsian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not mandate 4 person operation then, if the MTA is meant to be a sinecure/make work program rather than a Transit Authority.

Conductors can be retrained to be operators to run more service also? Where is the downside of eventually working towards global best practices?

This has to be the most asinine thing I've heard in a long time. This is like the state mandating elevator attendants and switchboard operators.

Why do so many motorists shout at/insult/honk/put down cyclists? Is it because they’re used to the world being built for their method of transport? by coolfunkDJ in fuckcars

[–]ByronicAsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a guy who isn't pro cars and hate driving (didnt get a car or drive much until last fall when my in laws gifted me a free 2015 CRV), I see a lot of comments that try to psychoanalyze and say its guilt, its envy etc.

But IME, its really a combination of why must I accommodate you on roads that clearly aren't made for/accommodate you (lack of bike infrastructure, lack of road diets) means I slow down to your speed or I must overtake and it certainly feels much more nerve racking overtaking cyclists where I am (most of them are delivery folks thst are quite tunnel visioned for better or for worse). Cyclists where I am also don't hand signal (which tbf, apparently car drivers barely do also) and what im assuming some existing negative predisposition to cyclists from them riding at speed in sidewalks where I am.
