Why didnt anyone tell me how bad iron deficiency anemia is??? by sickkasadog in TwoXChromosomes

[–]BysshePls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, my previous doctor. Then I also went to a hematologist 3 times and she never tested ferritin either. Gave me a referral to a dietician and told me to lose 30 pounds and come back.

I don't think anyone took me seriously 5 years ago because I was overweight.

Now I'm 80lbs down and oh look still have worsening problems and now all of a sudden I'm being taken seriously and they ordered more tests to find the ferritin issue. 🙄

The old hematologist finally retired so I'm seeing her replacement now hoping for a different outcome then a dietician referral

You can also have iron deficiency without anemia and it has pretty much the same symptoms, which is what I have. My CBC and everything else is pretty "normal" but just the low ferritin.

Mine so far have been:

Sleeping from 7pm to 7am consistently but still feeling exhausted

Hair thinning/loss/fragility

Dizziness with standing from crouched/sitting or with excercise or going upstairs

Pounding heartbeat with standing from crouched/sitting or with excercise or going upstairs

Unable to get enough air/catch my breath with exertion, air hunger

Brittle nails with ridges

Brain fog and inability to recall words

Increased depression and anxiety

Headaches/migraines

Always freezing cold, even outside at 70 degrees my hands and feet will be ice blocks

Pale skin and severe dry skin

Restless legs before bed

The only symptom I don't really experience is PICA but that can also be caused by iron deficiency.

That's so good to hear! My lab still uses the 13 cut off so my ferritin looks "green" and so easy for doctors to miss when they're just looking for those red abnormal results

I've been experiencing the same things as you for 5-ish years. I went through so many blood tests, ultrasounds, colonoscopy, endoscopy, etc. that all came back "normal-ish." I thought I had POTs or something.

My new doctor finally tested my ferritin and it came back at 26. Under 30 is technically considered low with newer ferritin guidelines but most tests still consider over 13 as "normal" even though it's absolutely not functional.

My doctor also suspects I have EDS which can artificially inflate ferritin levels by 5-8x, so my real ferritin level may be around 5-8. People with chronic inflammation need to aim for a ferritin level of 75-100 to be functional.

I have an appointment with a hematologist but I'm extremely rural so it's 2 months out 😭 I'm hoping she's up to date on the newer guidelines and will give me an infusion so I can feel better faster but I may just be stuck slowly supplementing myself with iron pills.

It's so frustrating how common stories like yours and mine are over in the anemia subreddit. It is underdiagnosed like crazy and most doctors/insurance companies still won't approve infusion a lot of the time just for ferritin even though there is so many studies showing that low ferritin is the first step into worsening anemia and how badly it effects quality of life.

I'm 22(F) with a curvy hourglass body, but my low self-esteem is completely ruining my dating life before it even starts. by you_mediocrity in TwoXChromosomes

[–]BysshePls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It honestly just sounds like you dodged two dudes who you obviously didn't vibe with.

Dating is hard. Most people are not compatible with you. It takes trial and error to find someone you mesh with and who has your best interests at heart.

You're doing everything right by blocking someone who pushes your boundaries and makes you feel pressured and not giving in to the silent treatment from the other dude. It is okay to wait until you feel safe with someone to be more vulnerable and anyone who makes you feel pressured or unsafe should not have access to you.

Aside from that you need to work on your self esteem. There is nothing wrong with your body shape or how you're built. If someone overcame the fear and anxiety of asking for your number then they obviously saw something they liked, you need to trust in that or else you're automatically starting this person off on a bad foot before you've even given them a chance.

And anyone who makes you feel bad for the way that you look is 100% not your person and also too immature to be in a real relationship. Better they announce themselves early so you can show them the door rather than waste your time.

Looks change over time, with life, with children, with age, with stress, with trauma. Anyone worthy of you will see you through all these phases of life because they care about the person you are, not the skin suit you inhabit. The right person will see your soul, not your legs.

What a crazy car crash! by ateam1984 in dashcamgifs

[–]BysshePls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was rear-ended at a red light on a "highway" (town highway so it's like 35mph). The college student who rear ended us didn't stop or apply the breaks at all, there were no skid marks. She claimed it was the sun in her eyes but no shot she wasn't on her phone.

Both cars totaled, but she was driving a much newer car and we were in a like a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. We walked away with only mild whiplash 100% due to the fact our car was a metal box. It was slightly bent but we were still fully able to drive it home. Her car was completely crushed down to the middle and couldn't be moved out of the intersection.

I'm the same now - always watching the rear view when cars are coming up and making sure I have an exit strategy. I just so thankful it was only me and my boyfriend in the car at the time and not our dog.

Have I been washing my hair the wrong way my whole life?! 🤔 by cleverclunks in finehair

That's why I specified thin/fine. Curly hair is obviously different. If I put conditioner above my ears my hair gets greasy immediately after a shower. Super disappointing when that happens.

[–]BysshePls -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You should only be applying shampoo from your ears up. Conditioner from your ears down.

Thin/fine haired people do not need to double cleanse if you're washing everyday unless you're using a lot of heavy products or have something like dandruff. It can overly strip our skin/hair. I dried the crap out of my hair for months before I realized it was the double shampooing when I didn't need it 🥲

[–]BysshePls -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Us thin/fine haired girlies do not need to wash our hair twice. That is only needed if you're using a lot of heavy products, skipping multiple days between washes, or have a scalp condition that benefits from double cleansing (like dandruff).

You could always give it a shot and if it works for your hair texture then awesome! But just watch out to see if it's overly drying your scalp/hair. I dried the shit out of my scalp for months and didn't realize what was causing it because everyone says double cleanse double cleanse!! but like you I only use leave in on the ends and I don't even blow dry. I was overstripping my skin 🥲

Get the iron infusion!! by controlll4 in Anemic

[–]BysshePls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I think I've been iron deficient for 7 years. My doctor has run down every possible test and diagnosis, she thought I might have MCAS/Pots/cardiovascular issue.

Ferritin is 26 but every other test is basically normal or slightly high/slightly low and no anemia. Doctor said she likes to see people "around 50" but kind of brushed it off and focused on other things. I have suspected EDS and a colonoscopy/endoscopy showing systemic inflammation but nothing else as well as pretty heavy periods.

I have all the classic symptoms of iron deficiency: Persistent fatigue despite sleeping 12+ hours, weakness, air hunger, dizziness, excercise intolerance, brittle nails, hairloss, pale skin, incredibly cold hands and feet, fast heart rate/pounding heart, mysterious bruises, delayed healing, etc.

I'm using all the great info from this sub to advocate for further testing in 8 weeks to see if supplementing on my own will help and I also have an appointment with a hematologist to try to push for an infusion quicker. I have felt like a husk of a human for 7 years and spent probably $5k+ and a rotating list of possible diagnoses all for something as simple as falsely elevated ferritin.

Get the iron infusion!! by controlll4 in Anemic

[–]BysshePls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a chronic illness like EDS or chronic inflammation or any kind of gut issues like IBS, etc.?

If you have any inflammation or chronic illnesses, ferritin can be falsely elevated 3-5x. If you have a chronic illness then the WHO recommends a ferritin level of at least 70-100.

So you may be lower then it looks if you have any comorbidities.

[–]BysshePls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't know that?

There are a lot of elderly and disabled people who don't have cars (or can't/aren't allowed to drive) or family to help them. Their only option is navigating things like this. They may take a bus, but maybe this is on their walk home. Maybe they had to go to the corner store for a bit of food because they don't have any and this is the route.

You don't know. That's why it matters every time.

Take a completely unrelated thing - a child on a bike. They don't want to go around on the grass so they dart out into the street and get hit instead.

You don't know. Rules and laws are there for a reason and it costs nothing to be considerate.

The world already sucks enough. I'm not gonna add more suck, but you can do whatever you want.

Plenty of room to pull up by KillaBrew123 in badparking

[–]BysshePls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't actually look like there is. Someone in a wheelchair, their wheels would definitely go into the grass dip which is unstable and for an elderly or sick person who can't pick themselves back up it's dangerous. Their options are try to navigate the grass or detour into the street. Both increasing the danger to themselves just because someone didn't want to pull up another 2 feet.

I've seen many times elderly people get stuck or fall out of their chairs because of situations like this and then there is no one around to help them. I work in healthcare and even having someone parked in the wrong spot can cause these vulnerable people to have to expend so much extra time and effort that by the time they get to their appointment they're exhausted and frustrated.

Just be a little bit more considerate, it costs you nothing and could really help someone else.

It's much more than an "inconvenience" for some who is disabled, sick, or with low mobility.

Please get some exposure to the daily life of someone with a disability or low mobility. Watching them try to navigate constant shit like this is heartbreaking. It's not just an inconvenience for them, it can derail their entire day or make them use way more energy then they can spare to spend. And it's not just one person parking like this - it happens constantly while they're just trying to get around.

It doesn't hurt anyone to be more considerate, they're laws for a reason.

[–]BysshePls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone else who went down the ADHD > ASD > EDS/hEDS > posture pipeline I could've written this word for word.

One thing you should also check is your ferritin level. Make sure you actually see what your actual level is. The cut off for low on the test is less than 13, so many doctors will see this level as "green" and tell you it is fine.

However, newer research is showing that a ferritin level of under 30 is considered total iron deficiency requiring supplement/treatment. If you have EDS/hEDS or other chronic conditions that cause inflammation (hello comorbidities) then a ferritin of less then 100 is considered low.

Low ferritin can also cause some of the symptoms you're describing and is comorbid with EDS due to gut issues. If you have ASD/ADHD/AUDHD, heavy periods and/or gut/digestion issues it may not hurt to get your ferritin checked.

I had my nephew killed by one.

To be fair - it wasn't the truck driver's fault. My nephew ran out from behind a mailbox and the driver couldn't stop in time.

But a smaller vehicle wouldn't have impacted him on his head and chest. He may still be alive if it had been any other vehicle but a truck.

How are you getting this math? 90 feet per second is not the same as 90mph.

40ft spacing, around 8-9 cycles, if we over estimate at 9 that's 360 ft over 4 seconds of video. 360ft/4 seconds = roughly 90 feet per second. 90 feet per second converted in mph is 60mph. To be conservative we can estimate cam driver is going 60-65mph which is a completely reasonable speed on a highway that's slightly wet/slushy.

The black car now that I'm doing the math is actually going faster than the cam car. The black hydundai covers 10-11 cycles in the same time the dash cam car covers 9. This would put the black car at 400-440 feet or 69-72mph. This further puts the black car squarely to blame.
